2. Hormone: Hormones are chemical substances
which are secreted at variable rates in
response to external or internal stimuli by an
endocrine gland or group of cells.
Sex hormone: Steroid hormones those are
produced by the ovaries or testes or adrenal
cortex and affects the growth or function of
the reproductive organs or the developments
of secondary sex characteristics.
3. The main female sex hormones are:
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Estrogen.
Progesterone.
4. Origin: FSH is produced in the anterior pituitary gland under the
influence of Gonadotrophic Releasing Hormone produced in the
hypothalamus.
Function:
FSH regulates the development, growth, pubertal maturation,
reproductive processes of human body.
In women FSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicle in the “ovary”
before the release of an egg from one follicle at ovulation.
Plays vital role in the secretion of “Estrogen” hormone.
5. Origin: LH is produced in the anterior pituitary gland under the
influence of Gonadotrophic Releasing Hormone produced in the
hypothalamus.
Function:
LH carries different roles in two halves of the menstrual cycle.
In week 1-2 of cycle, LH is required to stimulate the ovarian follicle
in the ovary to produce female sex hormone “Oestradiol”.
Around day 14 of cycle, a surge in LH level causes ovarian follicle to
release mature ova, called ovulation.
In 3rd to 4th week of cycle ovarian follicle form corpus luteum. LH
acts on corpus luteum to produce “Progesterone”.
7. Origin: They are released by the follicles on the ovaries and are
also secreted by the corpus luteum after the egg has been
released from the follicle and from the placenta. The stimulation
for secretion of estrogen comes from the Luteinizing hormone (LH)
from anterior pituitary gland.
Function:
Estrogen promotes the development of female secondary sexual
characteristics, such as breasts etc.
It also involved in the thickening of the endometrium and other
aspects of regulating the menstrual cycle.
It also regulates various metabolic processes including bone growth
and cholesterol level.
Plays role in growth of pubic and underarm hair.
8. Origin: Progesterone hormone is released by the corpus luteum by
placenta during the 2nd half of menstrual cycle in the ovary.
Function:
Progesterone stimulates the growth of blood vessel that supply to
the endometrium and stimulates the glands to secrete nutrients to
nourish new embryo.
It prepares the uterus lining to allow the fertilised egg to implant.
During pregnancy it acts on the development of fetus; prevents
lactation and strengthen the pelvic wall muscle in preparation for
labour.
