What are identifiers? What purpose do they serve in the book industry? According to BISG's Best Practices for Identifying Digital Products, an identifier is generally a sequence of alpha-numeric characters that unambiguosly differentiates one thing from another in a particular context. But while that answer may seem straightforward enough, the fact is there's a lot more to identifiers than one might think. The book industry employs numerous identifiers for different reasons in its day-to-day operations.
