Racial and ethnic minority college students: Traditional college age students, ages 18 – 24, who identify within a racial or ethnic minority population,
attending college and wanting to enter into the work force within their field of study.
African Americans make up 13.3% of the United States population, Hispanics/Latinxs are 17.8%, Asians are 5.7%, Native Americans and Alaska
Natives are 1.3%, and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are .2% (United, 2016).
Enrollment for minority college students has been increasing (Krogstad & Fry, 2014).
From 1996 – 2012, college enrollment among Hispanics ages 18 – 24, has increase 240% and African American enrollment has increase 72%
(Krogstad & Fry, 2014).
Racial/ethnic minority college students are often faced with unique stressors, such as minority status stress (Cokley, McClain, Enciso, & Martinez
(2013).
Minority status stress is caused by factors such as racism, discrimination, educational hegemony, microaggressions, and feelings of not belonging on a
college campus (Cokley, et al., 2013).
Minority status stress can lead to imposter feelings, which has been linked to negative mental health concerns, such as depression (Cokley, et al., 2013).
According to the 2007 – 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, the college remediation rate for Hispanics/Latinxs was 43% and 41% for
African Americans (Roscoe, 2015).

Discrimination is nothing new to our society or is it something that should be taken lightly and for many decades our Nation has endured many
conflicts that have tested the will of Americans over the decades and it is evident that as we have become more diverse so too has our workforce.
Although, we are in the twenty first century the goal is to understand why prejudice and discrimination is still so prevalent and how we can do better
while trying to bring together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences still has proven to be an issue that minorities are constantly fighting as
they struggle to find there place in society. Through an array of well–educated researchers showing how diversity is nothing new to our society, but if
we are to continue to grow and move forward we must be able to understand that with diversification we can foster a strong and inclusive economy that
is built to last and nurture a nation that will continue to lead the world as standard setter.

Women in Politics: In the Past
To begin with, the fight for formal representation of women in politics was extensive and difficult. Before 1916, voting is a privilege mainly
restricted for men. During this time, women's freedom is very limited. Married women can own property, but cannot sell it without the agreement
with her husband. In addition, according to Manitoba's Act Respecting Married Women, although a woman is allowed to have ownership of her
property, any earnings she makes goes to her spouse. Only until 1872, did married women obtain the right to their own wage free from their
spouses' control. Moreover, the first woman in Canada and in the British Empire to be appointed to a court occurred in 1914. Finally, in 1916,
women in Manitoba were the first to acquire the right to vote and run for office. Furthermore, Mary Ellen Smith became the first Canadian female

The most common debate between a minority group and a majority group are the ideas around religion and it is Elyakim Kislev (2012) who argued
that, "[there are] challenges faced by religious groups in a society with a non–religious majority." Throughout both McGraw Hill– Higher Education's

Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future murder. Set in early 21st century Washington,
DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these
psychics, referred to as pre–cognitives (or "pre–cogs") to generate not only the name of the victim and perpetrator, but also the evidence against them:

The Minority Report by Spielberg is about a one man conspiracy to keep pre crime up and running. In the book by Dick, there is a larger
conspiracy to destroy precrime. The final results are opposite as well; in the book precrime was maintained and still operational. In the movie,
precrime was shut down and destroyed. The methods of precrime are also different. In the book, there are three precogs which mutter an
indecipherable language, which a machine interprets into images of a murder. Then a card comes out of the machine with the name of the killer

Abstract
This study explores the relationships between majority and minority groups and their awareness of blatant and subtle prejudice, by priming either
common or dual identity. It was hypothesized that due to their marginalization, minority groups will be more aware of both subtle and blatant prejudice
and that those primed with dual identity will show a similar heightened awareness. The results demonstrated that majority groups were more aware of
both types of prejudice, contradicting many previous results in this area. This study was conducted on an Australian population, making it unique, and
possibly explaining the contrary results. However, it has also been suggested that the social stigma surrounding racism in our society has increased the

Historically in America, voting has been a relatively discriminatory practice. It has limited and deprived many individuals of many diverse races,
ethnicities, and walks of life from casting their votes to select the individual who they feel is most educated, and skilled to represent their interests. Not

The Bradford riots in 1995, and other public outcries showed the growing animosity that was being felt toward the police by minority ethnic

Dr. Martha Bernal focused not only on younger children, but students ages 18 and up who were looking at potential colleges. She conducted a study to
show that the pictures and information provided in school packet materials mailed to prospective students had a large impact on the likelihood of them
contacting the school for more information. The article titled Use of Application Materials for Recruitment of EthnicMinority Students in Psychology
questioned on page 818 "whether these packets are equally effective in recruiting ethnic minority applicants" (Bernal, Barron & Leary, 1983) as they
are in attracting white applicants. The hypothesis explored the idea that programs which stated a higher proportion of ethnic minority grad students
would be judged as having a higher chance of recruiting ethnic minorities. Specifically, Dr. Martha Bernal explored how clinical psychology programs
in the United States displayed diversity within the packets mailed out to prospective students.
The set–up involved mailing out a letter to 107 programs offered across the US which were accredited at the time, in which a fictitious student

other groups that lack equality, such as women, homosexuals and people with disabilities. By definition, the hearing majority classifies Deaf people as
minorities because of their inability to hear. Yet linguists and social scientists argue that the basis of Deaf people's status as aminority group is not one

Unequal treatment and the lack of power are phenomena Deaf people have endured throughout time because of their inability to hear. Historically
hearing people viewed deafness as a defect of the mind and body and they did not afford the Deaf the right to an education, own property or sign
contracts.
Deaf people have long been subjugated by hearing people in all areas of life. The most blatant act of audism occurred in the education of Deaf
children. From 1880 until today hearing people have dictated that the method of education utilized should be one that enables the Deaf to more readily
assimilate into the mainstream society. In order to achieve this goal, Deaf children were forced to wear auditory trainers (machines that supposedly
allowed them to listen to teachers' voices) and were slapped with rulers if they attempted to sign or gesture out of frustration. (Graybill video) The
focus of Deaf education was not about teaching Deaf children material appropriate to grade level but altering behavior and improving speech ability.
