Minority Status Stress
Racial and ethnic minority college students: Traditional college age students, ages 18 – 24, who identify within a racial or ethnic minority population,
attending college and wanting to enter into the work force within their field of study.
African Americans make up 13.3% of the United States population, Hispanics/Latinxs are 17.8%, Asians are 5.7%, Native Americans and Alaska
Natives are 1.3%, and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are .2% (United, 2016).
Enrollment for minority college students has been increasing (Krogstad & Fry, 2014).
From 1996 – 2012, college enrollment among Hispanics ages 18 – 24, has increase 240% and African American enrollment has increase 72%
(Krogstad & Fry, 2014).
Racial/ethnic minority college students are often faced with unique stressors, such as minority status stress (Cokley, McClain, Enciso, & Martinez
(2013).
Minority status stress is caused by factors such as racism, discrimination, educational hegemony, microaggressions, and feelings of not belonging on a
college campus (Cokley, et al., 2013).
Minority status stress can lead to imposter feelings, which has been linked to negative mental health concerns, such as depression (Cokley, et al., 2013).
According to the 2007 – 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, the college remediation rate for Hispanics/Latinxs was 43% and 41% for
African Americans (Roscoe, 2015).

regarding integration of their communities: identification with multiple groups; identification with one group, to the exclusion of others; and
identification with one group at a given time" (Poynter & Washington, 2005). This is an aspect that places a measurable toll. One way many LGBTQ
people of color overcome the barriers to integration is by establishing their own communities. Groups that share sexual orientation and ethnic
background can be essential for helping individuals find support and empowerment.

Abstract
Discrimination is nothing new to our society or is it something that should be taken lightly and for many decades our Nation has endured many
conflicts that have tested the will of Americans over the decades and it is evident that as we have become more diverse so too has our workforce.
Although, we are in the twenty first century the goal is to understand why prejudice and discrimination is still so prevalent and how we can do better
while trying to bring together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences still has proven to be an issue that minorities are constantly fighting as
they struggle to find there place in society. Through an array of well–educated researchers showing how diversity is nothing new to our society, but if
we are to continue to grow and move forward we must be able to understand that with diversification we can foster a strong and inclusive economy that
is built to last and nurture a nation that will continue to lead the world as standard setter.
Discrimination is a Detriment in Today's Work Force
The topic of minorities in the workforce and how the struggle to accomplish equal treatment in today's workforce is nothing new to our society. For
centuries we have been concerned that by bringing together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences, as well as the many businesses of this

How Women And Racial Minorities Are Marginalized
If you take a moment and try to do a head count of how many women and racial minorities there are in public office right now, you would be
astonished with the lack of diversity in politics. Minority groups such as women and non–white individuals are prone to different treatment in society
compared to male and white individuals, and politics is no exception. Generally, there are 37 states in which there are less than 10 percent of women
representatives in single or lower houses (UN Women, 2016). In addition, the Congress consists of 80 percent white male (Washington Post, 2015). It
is pretty evident based on these numbers who are underrepresented in politics. Throughout this essay, it would be depicted how women and racial

Women in Politics: In the Past
To begin with, the fight for formal representation of women in politics was extensive and difficult. Before 1916, voting is a privilege mainly
restricted for men. During this time, women's freedom is very limited. Married women can own property, but cannot sell it without the agreement
with her husband. In addition, according to Manitoba's Act Respecting Married Women, although a woman is allowed to have ownership of her
property, any earnings she makes goes to her spouse. Only until 1872, did married women obtain the right to their own wage free from their
spouses' control. Moreover, the first woman in Canada and in the British Empire to be appointed to a court occurred in 1914. Finally, in 1916,
women in Manitoba were the first to acquire the right to vote and run for office. Furthermore, Mary Ellen Smith became the first Canadian female
cabinet minister and Agnes Macphail became the first woman elected in the House of Commons in 1921. Although women finally achieved the right
to vote and run for office, the number of women who attained seats in the House of Commons were very little. The reason for that is because of the
following three factors: 1) people perceive politics as a masculine pursuit, 2) women were constrained by responsibilities such as child–rearing and
home–making which prevented them to gain experiences

Cultural Appropriation And Its Effects On Minority Culture
In Western culture, people seldom realize the amount of cultural appropriation that occurs around them. Westerners are blinded by cultural mockery
and cultural appropriation without realizing its offensive effects to minority groups. During the Halloween holiday, in Western culture, people of all
ages dress up in a variety of costumes such as horror themed, fairy tale themed, job themed, cultural themed and much more. Harvard University
members have argued that a cultural themed costume is a form of cultural appropriation. Also in Westernculture, in the music industry, white artists
have utilized and exploited aspects from minority cultures to boost their fame. Costumes, props, ideas, music, and others considered as cultural
appropriation is often overlooked but it is apparent when closely examined. In countries that celebrate Halloween such as the United States and Canada,
it is a tradition to dress up in various types of costume themes. Some people dress up in cultural costumes or religious costumes. Herman Bhupal and
Judy Park from Harvard University have addressed that dressing in cultural or religious costumes for Halloween, "can serve as mechanisms for
cultural appropriation" (This Halloween, Choose Respect). Cultural appropriation is the adoption of standards and aspects from another culture when
the culture is a minority group. Some people may agree that wearing cultural clothing as Halloween costumes may be offensive to those of whose
culture is being mocked as

Health Disparities And Health Care For Minorities
Introduction
Racial bias in medicine leads to worse care for minorities is an article from U.S News & world report on the website http://health.usnews.com
/health–news/patient–advice/articles/2016–02–11/racial–bias–in–medicine–leads–to–worse–care–for–minorities.
In this article, the experience of a medical doctor is used to shed light on the subject of racial bias/ discrimination in health care and how it is affecting
health outcome of racial and ethnic minority. "Race or ethnic group is a major social factor that influences health in the U.S Braveman 387. Health
inequity is at the center stage of public health discussion. Understanding the upstream factors that causes inequities and disparities can help to bridge
the gap of inequality. Eliminating health disparity will protect and improve the health of racial and ethnic minority population, which is consistent with
the principle of public health–improving and protecting health of populations.
Concepts and analysis
The article is based on the experience of a Dr. Ron Wyatt, a reputable medical doctor/ patient safety officer, who sought medical care in a hospital
when he had a fever of 104 degrees. The hospital was referred to as an award winning hospital. The article suggested that he received lackluster and
substandard care from racially biased medical personnel. Considering the events of that day, one can only imagine the process of conferring award on
individuals and institutions. His experience began with the nurse

Minorities In Qualitative Research
The process in finding one's identity can be difficult, especially as there are many factors that may alter an individual's actions or thoughts about
themselves. After deconstructing several articles by academic researchers it was evident that the process of one's self identification stems mostly from
the way in which we communicate and interact with other cultures (also known as interculturalities). Each journal article posed a different aspect to the
research, while still showing patterns and overlap that correlated with the results found in the other articles. The researched used different
methodologies in order to conclude with credible findings. The methodologies included, interviews, questionnaires/surveys, case studies, online–chats,

The most common debate between a minority group and a majority group are the ideas around religion and it is Elyakim Kislev (2012) who argued
that, "[there are] challenges faced by religious groups in a society with a non–religious majority." Throughout both McGraw Hill– Higher Education's
work (2004) and Elyakim Kislev's (2012) research, the idea of a four step model was introduced. However, majorities and minorities do not share the
exact same steps, which can cause different outlooks to arise. Minorities emerge with the four strategies/methods which include; integration, also
known as participation in the majority culture while still holding on to their own, separation or rejection of the majority culture and only accepting their
own, assimilation or the rejection of their own culture and acceptance of the majority culture and finally marginalization, which focuses on the
rejection of both the majority culture and their own. The majority on the other hand show the same integration step (but participating or interacting
with the minority group) and then are followed by "acceptance, resistance and then redefinition and reintegration" (McGraw–Hill, 2004)." Kislev (2012)
argues that the most ideal model or step would be, "solely based on the acceptance of both cultures." Kislev's (2012) study also examined that the
ability to, "[take] from both cultures [would] be enough to increase the emotional well–being and educational achievements of minorities." By
acknowledging how different people between the two classes (minority and majority) accept both their culture and other cultures, it gives insight into
how they may shape their identities and ultimately, how they may treat

Minority Student Diversity
Abstract
Within the last decade or so, the number of minority students and "first generation students" enrolling, attending and graduating from colleges in the
US has increased significantly despite the rising cost of enrollment. This increase is due to the available scholarships, funding opportunities, affirmative
action or quota to be met by these institutions. The shift in the number of minority students graduating has also affected the diversity of people in the
workplace. Although discrimination legally ended more than 40 years ago with the Civil Rights Movement, the ongoing battle of minority people in the
United States trying to assimilate into a culture and justice system that does not work in their favor has continued although it is ... Show more content on

White students represent 75% of the students at the top 468 colleges in the country even though they are only 62% of the country's college–age
population (Fletcher, 2013). On the other hand 67% of black students and 75% of Latino students attend open–access colleges. Black and Latino
students make up 37% of students at open access schools but only 15% of students at the nation's top colleges while making up 33% of the country's
college age population (Fletcher,2013). Although black and Latino students are attending college at higher rates, they are not given the tools necessary
to graduate and succeed at the same rates as their white counterparts. 30% of black and Latino students with an A averages in high school end up in
community colleges, as compared with 22% of white students (Fletcher, 2013). Anthony Carnevale explains this phenomena saying, "The higher–
education system is colorblind in theory but in fact operates, at least in part, as a systematic barrier to opportunity for many blacks and Hispanics,
many of whom are college–qualified but tracked into overcrowded and under–funded colleges, where they are less likely to develop fully or to
graduate (Fletcher, 2013)." Carnevale further explains that the issue is not particularly with the students but the system that does not support them.
Michael Dannenberg, director of higher education and education finance policy at the Education Trust, noted "What individual colleges do often can
make all the difference in the world between a student graduating or leaving with a pile of debt and no degree. Demography is not destiny, and what
colleges do matters (Roach,

Stereotypes In Minority Report
Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future murder. Set in early 21st century Washington,
DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these
psychics, referred to as pre–cognitives (or "pre–cogs") to generate not only the name of the victim and perpetrator, but also the evidence against them:
hence the crime of murder is reduced to a black and white picture. Anytime the Pre–cogs' visions are in conflict a Minority Report is generated, yet it is
also destroyed except for what the pre–cog who predicted it remembers deep within their mind.
John Anderton is the Chief–of–Police of PreCrime, a department of the police that deals with murder and uses pre–cogs. His son was kidnapped,
driving him to PreCrime, and preventing further loss of innocent life. His faith in the system is rooted his loss, and up to his accusation, unfaltering.
His faith begins to falter when he discovers that there is missing data regarding some of the victims and perpetrators. This leads him to question the
system, which eventually leads those in charge to arrange for his arrest for the future murder of Jim Crow. Convinced of... Show more content on

someone – especially if he had previous knowledge that he was to commit it. Yet by the end of the movie we learn that there is no minority report for
him. He is destined to kill Crow. His choice is to arrest him for the kidnap and murder of his son, thereby restoring justice and creating his own

P.K. Dick's The Minority Report and Steven Spielberg's The Minority Report
Death can occur in four ways. A person can die from a physical illness, viruses and infections. A person can die from an accident. A person can
commit suicide. Finally a person can be murdered by another person. What if murders could be prevented? In P.K.Dick's story The Minority Report,
and in Spielberg's film The Minority Report, the future can be altered by using incredible technology. The success of Spielberg's adaptation of Dick's
short story to film can be determined by the way each was presented.

The Minority Report by Spielberg is about a one man conspiracy to keep pre crime up and running. In the book by Dick, there is a larger
conspiracy to destroy precrime. The final results are opposite as well; in the book precrime was maintained and still operational. In the movie,
precrime was shut down and destroyed. The methods of precrime are also different. In the book, there are three precogs which mutter an
indecipherable language, which a machine interprets into images of a murder. Then a card comes out of the machine with the name of the killer
and name of the victim on it. Spielberg made a more modern method out of this. In the movie, images are taken directly from the three precogs
brain and then interpreted by a person who tries to find out the location of the murder. Also there are two wooden balls made, one with the name of
the killer and the other with the name of the victim, on them. The movie also goes deeper into the creation of precrime, how crack babies whom
had an odd gift/curse of dreaming of murder became used to prevent murder. It also shows why Anderton joined precrime, to make sure no one else
would suffer like he did when he lost his son. The precogs in the book and movie are very different. First off their names in the book are Donna, Jerry
and Mike. In the movie their names are Agatha, Arthur and Dashiell. The movie also involves the precogs, or at least one of them, more into the story.

Differences Between Minority And Minority Groups
Abstract
This study explores the relationships between majority and minority groups and their awareness of blatant and subtle prejudice, by priming either
common or dual identity. It was hypothesized that due to their marginalization, minority groups will be more aware of both subtle and blatant prejudice
and that those primed with dual identity will show a similar heightened awareness. The results demonstrated that majority groups were more aware of
both types of prejudice, contradicting many previous results in this area. This study was conducted on an Australian population, making it unique, and
possibly explaining the contrary results. However, it has also been suggested that the social stigma surrounding racism in our society has increased the
awareness by majority groups, as they strive to be politically correct and avoid judgment by their peers. Another worthy discussion point is the
internalization of prejudice by minority groups living in a majority–dominated society.
How Common and Dual Identity Can Influence Majority and Minority Awareness of Subtle and Blatant Prejudice
In modern society, prejudiced ideas and values are present amongst majority–dominated societies (Banaji & Devos, 2005). Minority groups, and
individuals with a heightened sense of cultural affiliation to their ethnicity, have been shown to be more aware of subtle prejudice than majority
groups (Operario & Fiske, 2001). Previous research in the area of racial prejudice has also

Summary Of Minorities In The Rise Of The Rocket Girls
To be treated as lesser or unworthy is a terrible thing. What happened to 'all men are created equal'? I guess that only applies if you are a straight,
white man. A minority is a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and are often subjected to different treatment. That said,
minorities were mistreated and shoved to the back of history. In Aria by Richard Rodriguez the Rodriguez family feel what it means to be aminority in
their everyday life. They're held at arm's length by the people around them, and struggle to assimilate. In Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt it's
not race that sets these women behind. It is simply the fact that they are women. In both novels society is presenting more challenges to a certain
group, but that does not stop them. Even today minorities are still at a disadvantage. That does not stop people from pursuing their goals and dreams.
As a student perseverance is needed because you cannot give up easily or you just will not make it. Aria has many counter arguments and debates
revolving around assimilation. To better visualize the meaning ofassimilation imagine having a group of blue blocks all exactly the same. You bring
in a few different colored blocks red, yellow, green ones. In order for them to fit in you paint them all blue. Isn't that erasing part of who they are?

Essay on Minorities in Song of Solomon
Minorities within Minorities in Song of Solomon
In a study about minorities, the groups that are differing from the dominant culture are seen as homogeneous. But, if we look deeper into the groups,
we can see that there are distinctions among the minorities concerning lifestyle and social status. In Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon the author
provides examples in the background of the story that shows people with differential identities of the general identity of the minority group.
The character Macon Dead and his family is represented as differing from the society they live in with their social status. They are rich and try to live

It is not for the sake of his family or to have fun, but to make everybody see his car. These rides were "a way to satisfy himself that he was indeed a
successful man" (31). It is impressive how Morrison reflects Macon's desires in life with the route of the Sunday rides: "...through the rough part of
town, over the bypass downtown, and headed for the wealthy white neighborhoods" (32).
The difference between Milkman and his father is that he was born rich and does not have the ambitions of his father. But, because of the way he was
raised, he cannot prevent himself from acting different from the African–American society. In fact, we see that he has only Guitar as a friend. He likes
to spend time with women in parties. The result of his wealthy life and the fact that he was raised in a city shows us his distinction from the society
when he arrives in Shalimar.
When Milkman talks with the shopkeeper Mr. Solomon, he grows up the anticipation of the people around him. The reasons why they are offended by
Milkman is clearly stated in the following passage:
They looked with hatred at the city Negro who could buy a car as if it were a bottle of whiskey because the one he had was broken. And what's more,
who had said so in front of them. He hadn't bothered to say his name, nor ask theirs, had called them "them," and would certainly despise their days,
which should have been spent harvesting their own crops, instead of waiting around

Ethnic Minorities and Elder Employment Essay
An ethnic minority is a group of people who differ in race or color or in national, religious, or cultural origin from the dominant group–often the
majority population–of the country in which they live. The different identity of an ethnic minority may be displayed in any number of ways, ranging
from distinctive customs, lifestyles, language or accent, dress, and food preferences to particular attitudes, moral values, and economic or political
beliefs espoused by members of the group. Characteristically the minority is recognized, but it is not necessarily accepted by the larger society in which
its members live. The nature of the relationship of the ethnic minority to the larger society will tend to determine whether the minority group ... Show

Our community organization, XXX, which has long been devoting to the improvement of life quality for senior citizens, should take this fact into

The Pros And Cons Of Minority Voting
Historically in America, voting has been a relatively discriminatory practice. It has limited and deprived many individuals of many diverse races,
ethnicities, and walks of life from casting their votes to select the individual who they feel is most educated, and skilled to represent their interests. Not
only has this been proven to be wrong by discriminating minority groups in voting, it also has proved to be a process, which minimizes the largest
growing demographics in the country. Furthermore, with millennials growing to become more politically active, minority groups are becoming more
politically involved than ever. Taking this into account an important question that is raised by the author William Eskridge in his book "Legislation and
Statutory Interpretation" is "Would minorities be better off with more representatives who had to pay attention to their interests because they are a
powerful and organized constituency, rather than with a few representatives of minority districts who specialize in protecting only their interests?"
(Eskridge,Frickley,& Garrett, 2006, pp.55). The answer to this question is yes. Minorities would be better off with more representatives who had to pay
attention to their interests, because they are a powerful constituency. Currently there are three historical methods to dilute minority voting strengths.
These are pointed out best in the short film by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) political scientist Laughlin McDonald. Here Mr.

police; it is this dispute that the essay shall examine. To begin with the paper will look at the problems, which existed prior to Sir William

The Bradford riots in 1995, and other public outcries showed the growing animosity that was being felt toward the police by minority ethnic
communities. Another factor, which led the opinions of minority ethnic citizens of the police to become additionally hostile, is the ever advancing
statistical and research evidence of racism within the police force. In 1978 Stuart Hall et al showed most clearly how, largely on the basis of
pre–existing stereotypes minority ethnic people (in particular black people) were being criminalized and subjected to extraordinary policing and
punishment. Both these factors increased the feelings of hatred for the police amongst minority ethnic communities. This was then furthered by the
subsequent failings of the Scarman report. These included his failure to explain properly in his report the main reason why black people were so
angry with the police this was to do with the oppressive policing that they were being subjected to. He was unsuccessful in looking at police powers
(particularly stop and search) (Bridges 1982, Howe 1988 cited in Bowling et al 2002) and most importantly he failed to take a proper account of
'institutional racism'. Consequently because of the growing

All of the characters, Tom Cruise as John Anderton especially, do a great job displaying the events that take place throughout the film. Cruise has a
remarkable way of helping the film viewers see his emotions. Through his acting, you can sense the emotions that his character is feeling without it
having to actually be said. This type of emotional and physical acting from Cruise is exceptional after Anderton witnesses himself murdering a stranger
in the vision. The viewer can tell from that moment the confusion and terror Anderton is feeling. Cruise's acting throughout Minority Report is easy for
the viewers to connect to, making it a more interesting film to watch. Another job well done in the acting aspect of this film is by Samantha Morton
who plays the role of Agatha. Morton successfully helps the viewer connect with her character in an emotional aspect. When watching the film, it is
easy to sense Agatha's vulnerability and take her as an innocent and fearful character, as she is haunted by the many things she has seen. This
characterization of Agatha is easily seen when Anderton takes her out into public and she clings to him, as if she is a child. The acting of Samantha

Minority Group Marginalization
Marginalization of minority groups has been a problem in the United States for a quite a long time. Even the government and the society have set some
rules and constraints against certain minority groups in the United States. One of the minority groups is the homosexual groups. Many states of United
States marginalized the issue of same sex marriage so much that they placed ban on same sex marriage. In those states, even the police officers treat
same sex marriage people as criminal because of their sexual preference. Another minority groups is the disability groups. The disable people
experience prejudices and faced various discriminatory treatment from the government. So like the disable people, many other minority groups face the
health disparities. In the ariticle, "Culturally Based Explanations of Minority Students' Academic Achievement" it was mentioned that minority groups
are classified as autonomous, immigrant, or caste–like in the political view of the society (Trueba, 1). Stereotyping from the government and social
groups is also are common problem faced by the minority group.
Moralization of the minority groups makes difficult for the adolescence to develop the minority identity. In the article, "Eating disturbances among

function than families who are a part of the general societal "majority". Throughout this essay, I would like to discuss how untrue this statement is.

Different cultures and practices require acceptance from each dominating ethnic groups, and this can be incredibly difficult to achieve. Growing up
in the 90's or earlier, it was particularly difficult to find classmates, or even friends who shared the same values as you. As time goes on, society
opens up to various practices and accepts the fact that not everyone is the same. This leads to relying and confiding in those who are of the same
minority groups.
Since it can be difficult to meet people who are in the same ethnic minority, it forms a bond and sense of reliance on one another. These families
have no one but each other, which proves that their relationship will be stronger, because their loyalty lies with each other. A Muslim family that
must pray 5 times a day for religious purposes will feel more accepted and understood with those of their own religious group. In elementary school,
I was the only Muslim until Grade 6. I did not learn to pray or share my values with anyone because no one would understand or even accommodate
my needs. When the Muslim community began to expand, I noticed prayer groups being formed and students had a quiet area to meet their religious
needs. I wonder how different I would be if there

The Impact Of Visible Minorities In Canada
What are visible minorities? Visible minorities are those people that are not native people or white skined in race or non–white in color. Canada is
multicultural country that divides its population into two categories; visible minorities and non visible minorities. It has been noticed that the number
of visible minorities is increasing per year in Canada (Black, 2009 p.71). The number and impact of visible minority citizens of Canada is developing
in terms of percentage of the population. Visible minorities are also allowed to take an interest in different fields, for example social, governmental,
private limited and politics. They also have rights in all terms same as to white people. Many immigrants from different countries based on work
permit or study permit came here in canada. These migrated immigrants have lot of opportunities to settle down , get education , and with that work
is also applicable. Canadian government had provide immigrants a special place in canada and made rules and regultions as for canadians. That is
why Canada is a multicultural society in which different kinds of religions live together and cooperate with common language to describe each
others feelings. So, migrated people from different countries are called as visible minorites. However, visible minorities are seen under present in the
terms of political field in Canada ,but there is also some inequality is shown by white people in politics. "Indians in the US, visible minorities and

Dr. Martha Bernal focused not only on younger children, but students ages 18 and up who were looking at potential colleges. She conducted a study to
show that the pictures and information provided in school packet materials mailed to prospective students had a large impact on the likelihood of them
contacting the school for more information. The article titled Use of Application Materials for Recruitment of EthnicMinority Students in Psychology
questioned on page 818 "whether these packets are equally effective in recruiting ethnic minority applicants" (Bernal, Barron & Leary, 1983) as they
are in attracting white applicants. The hypothesis explored the idea that programs which stated a higher proportion of ethnic minority grad students
would be judged as having a higher chance of recruiting ethnic minorities. Specifically, Dr. Martha Bernal explored how clinical psychology programs
in the United States displayed diversity within the packets mailed out to prospective students.
The set–up involved mailing out a letter to 107 programs offered across the US which were accredited at the time, in which a fictitious student
requested brochures and other materials about the clinical program offered, as well as materials on the number of minorities within the program itself.
Interestingly, the fictitious girl named "Ana Acres" did not state her ethnicity or race, allowing the schools to send out information based on their own
judgement and not the preconceived judgement of her

The Importance Of Minority Status In America
Minority status has long since been viewed in a not–so–positive light. From the reflex many people have to lock their doors when they see a homeless
person or a person of color, to stereotyping and assumptions based on institutionalized racism, to discrimination, minority status has a part to play in
all of it. Similarly, many people have the idea that deaf people cannot do anything for themselves because they are "disabled". Even though America
was once hailed as a melting pot because of the diversity of its citizens, things like "you're in America now, speak English" are said in today's
America. While being defined as a minority isn't inherently bad, it has become an excuse for some members of the majority to treat minorities as
second–class citizens. People of color have been persecuted in this country since it was "discovered" by Christopher Columbus. Starting with the
genocide of the Native Americans, the slavery of African Americans, continuing into the institutionalizedracism that exists to this day. "For
generations, people have used their mixed–race backgrounds to gain advantages in society. Many of those who were half black, for instance, "passed"
for white to avoid discrimination" (Hu, 2012). While race is clearly not the definition of one's character, many people, even members of the same
minority group often look at only negative stereotypes when meeting a person. In my personal experience, I have been told by people of multiple
races that I could pass for

Visible Minority And Immigrant Racism
Visible Minority and Immigrant Racism in the Canadian Work Environment
In the ideal world, every person is treated equally in the workplace whether it be hiring, promotion, assignments or termination. However in reality,
racial discrimination and harassment remain pervasive in the workplace, with 1 in 4 visible minority workers who reported that they had experienced
racial harassment or discrimination in the workplace [3]. In this essay, I will be discussing the social–history of racism in the workplace, the nature of
racism in the labour force, motives and factors, immigration policies, temporary programs and exploitation of employment, the de–skilling of
individuals and non–recognition of foreign credentials, the social–history of racism in the workplace, racism in the sociological conflict theory
paradigm, and finally, policy recommendations to aimed to eliminate and decrease racism in the work environment. In the Canadian work environment,
racism exists as a complex and multidimensional inequality for visible minorities and immigrants, and can be examined socially, economically and
politically using the sociological Marxist conflict theory paradigm.

Identity can be based on many different factors including, but not limited to; race, color, political presence and participation, and culture. The way
one identifies themselves can be shaped by their political ideology, their group identity, their partisan identification, their voting behavior and their
interest in group activities. However the way one person may see themselves may not be the way they are perceived by others. Ascribed identity can
be described as the way that society, or other people impose on you. A factor that is heavily involved in shaping ascribed identity is stereotyping.

The effect of minority status has a great deal to do with the political representation of minority groups. The participation in civil rights movements,
like the major one in the 1950 's and 1960 's conducted by the blacks, is a way for a minority, or "dominated," group to empower themselves socially
and politically. Minority status is still prevalent in our current political system and will continue to have a large, mostly negative, effect on the
representation of these minority groups until a change is made. I think that with time will come a balance of power between groups and it will no
longer be a minority versus majority situation, but a more level playing field that has an even say it what shapes our political lives.
Race can be defined as groupings among people that are understood as having a physical and hereditary bias. Examples of these groupings are
generalizing someone as black, white, yellow or brown. That being said, race is a social, not biological, construction that makes it easier for one
group to assume "domination" over another. These groups can be classified by physical differences which can cause cultural differences. There is a
historical legacy of policies, laws and social conventions that have sought to exclude certain groups and benefit another. The black versus white
dynamic is probably the most recognized and most ingrained social construction in the United States. Beginning with the British coming to North

It is no coincidence that it is called poor health. What I mean is that the people who have it hardest in this country, those with the lowest incomes, have
the worst health. It could just as easily be called minority health, rather than poor health, because the majority of the people living in poverty are racial
or ethnic minorities. Many racial minorities in the US suffer from poor health, but not because they have worse genetics, rather from worse educational
opportunities. This is a problem of all those in poverty, but since a disproportionate amount of those in poverty are minorities; I am focusing my paper

Although there are a few "race related" diseases, such as sickle cell anemia, the illnesses that are killing the minority population are environment
related, like Coronary Heart Disease. In a study done by Alan Goodman, he cites four important points about race and genetics:
1."The concept of race is based on the idea of fixed, ideal and unchanging types"
Racial categories date back to the days of ancient empires, and haven't changed significantly since then, despite the huge changes in cultures since those
times. There has obviously been a huge amount of racial mixture since those times, and the concept of race now is just an archaic social construct.
2."Human Variation is continuous"
These racial categories are completely arbitrary. There is no way a clear line can be drawn between the races, and all races relate on a gradient today.
3."Human Variation is nonconcordant"
What he means by this is that traits vary independently of other traits. Since race only really correlates with skin, hair, and eye color, there is no basis
for the claim that certain diseases go along with a certain race. Sickle cell anemia may affect equatorial Africans, but also Greeks and Turks. This
shows how the traits vary independently.
4."Within Group Variation is much greater than variation among ' races'"
There are many studies that show within closely related racial groups, like Hopi Indians, there is only about

Minority Groups within Empires

Conclusion:
1– Recommendations regarding dealing with minorities
When the word "Empire" is heard, people tend to think of a hegemonic state with an emperor that oppresses all those who oppose him. Such an
impression is not the result of nothingness, but that of shallow knowledge of certain empires that prevailed in the pre–modern and early modern world.
However, before we get into details about how minorities were dealt with, we have to define our terms. The first term to be defined is "minority";
which according to Richard T. Schaefer means "a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than
members of a dominant or majority group."
There are certain characteristics for minority groups. The first is that they have a distinguishing physical or cultural trait. Such a case is manifested
regarding the Hijab in France, or the use of Kurdish language by Lebanese Kurds. The second is being treated unequally, and having less control over
one's life, as was the case with Africans in South Africa. The third characteristic is having involuntary membership, with no personal choice being
employed in the process. That characteristic is to be observed with African Americans born to slave parents. A fifth and highly important

In this paper I will be reviewing the movie Minority Report directed by Steven Spielberg released in 2002. In the entire review of this film, I will be
discussing some specific aspects such as few scenes from the movie, some technical aspects and the intended audience of the film. In addition I will
add my own opinion to all the aspects throughout this paper. Finally I will round off my review by concluding why this film is worth of watching both
for personal entertainment and academic purpose.
In this film Tom Cruise plays the role of protagonist as Chief John Anderton. The role of antagonist is played by Max von Sydow as Director Lamar
and Colin Farrell as Danny Witwer. Besides, one of the vital roles is played by Samantha Morton as Agatha. This movie takes place during the year of

Typically minority groups are thought of in the context of race; however, a minority group can also consist of gender and class. The struggles facing a
minority group complicate further when these different facets of minority categories are combined into what is sometimes called a double minority.
Throughout their writing, African American women have exposed how being a double minority changes the conditions of being a minority. In Toni
Morrison's Song of Solomon, the African American female characters demonstrate the impact of having a double minority status.

Challenges Faced By Ethnic Minority Supervisors in Clinical Supervision
Personal Preparation My specialization paper will focus on the challenges faced by ethnic minority supervisors in clinical supervision. My paper is
guided by the courses I took in the doctoral program, my personal experience as a supervisor and the gaps in literature review that motivated me to
pursue this area of research. In the past two and a half years of my doctoral program, I took courses (advanced clinical supervision, advanced family
counseling, and independent research in multicultural counseling supervision, multicultural literature for children and adolescents, and a course on
survey design in educational research) to help me better understand the cross–cultural supervision and different challenges supervisor's face in

same/different ethnicity of supervisors and supervisee affect the supervision process. The UF doctoral program has given me a unique opportunity to
supervise many supervisees from cultures (Chinese, Taiwanese, Hispanic, African American, and White Caucasian American) different than mine. As a
result, I have experienced some challenges as a supervisor in the supervisory relationship that taught me how speaking about ones culture shapes the
supervisory alliance. I have learned that I should communicate openly about my

Analysis Of Minority Report
The 2002 film, Minority Report, seems to contain the aspects of a Kantian approach, but when analysing the movie in further detail, does it hold its
place? The Pre–crime program punishes individuals for having the intent to murder another, even when the action does not take place. Kant elaborates
his standards pertaining ethics in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, where Pre–crime can be further understood. Minority Report takes place
in the year 2054, crime is virtually eradicated from Washington D.C. due to the Precrime crew. The program uses three gifted humans, known as
Pre–Cogs, to see in the future and predict crimes beforehand. John Anderton, the head of Precrime, believes that the system is flawless, however, the

Kant's first proposition is an action has moral worth only if it is done out of duty, such as when someone who has absolutely no interest in donating
to the poor does so out of duty. His second proposition is that action has moral worth not because of its aim, but because of the maxim on which it is
based, meaning that it would not matter if the intent failed, as long as the principle was good. His third proposition is that duty is the necessity of an
action from respect for the law, such as if an individual is in an embarassing spot, they could will the lie, but not will the maxim to lie. Kant argues
that everything is secretly done in self benefit, an example can be an individual helping another merely for the fulfilled feeling. Comparing Kantian
aspects to Minority Report can be done with ease. Kant's second proposition, that an action has moral worth because of its maxim, can be further
understood in the Pre–crime stance. The Pre–crime organization is in place in order to stop murders. Individuals, such as Anderton, are sought out to
be arrested before they even comprehend the crime. However, Kant would argue that the arrest is valid due to the fact that they are capable of such an
intention, even if the act was not committed. Emotions are something people tend to little to no control on, which leads to crime of passion, or the red

The Importance Of Minority Rights In America
"America is the number 1 nation in the world!" is a common phrase we hear time and time again. American citizens, in my opinion, have a distorted
view on how "awesome" our country is. America was founded on the idea of freedom – at least freedom for white men at the time. While we have
grown and made bounds for the rights of minorities like African Americans, Hispanics and women; there is still room to grow. So many of our citizens
feel disenfranchised by our government and that our implemented democracy doesn't grant them the same rights as others. This is usually a feeling felt
by those in minority groups. Many in the majority don't realize that there are these discrepancies in our democracy because it's not something that
affects them. That is one of the obstacles, many turn a blind–eye to the injustices they see within our democracy because they do not want to get
involved or they want the status quo to stay intact. The majority's desire to stay on–top in our country is a huge influence in how those in the minority
then view their abilities. Many minority members feel hopeless and that despite speaking up a power shift to equality will never be attainable. There
is a profound lack of representation of minority groups in offices of power. As discussed in this class, there have only even been eight African
American US Senators, and only two currently in the Senate now. This lack of representation harms minority youth because when they have grand
dreams of changing the

The Importance Of Ethnic Minorities
Society consists of complex processes which affect different groups in different ways and some groups, for various reasons, can experience high rates
of disadvantage and oppression. Multiple aspects of a person's identity can create significant bias, resulting in disproportionate treatment. Young black
males for example, especially those from lower socio–economic backgrounds, suffer discrimination considerably more on the basis of their different
attributes; being young, male and belonging to an ethnic minority group whilst a status of being from poorer backgrounds further disadvantages their
opportunities and their position in society (Solanke, 2009). Intersectional frameworks play a key role by enabling a deeper insight into social
institutions and practices concerning ethnic minorities and social problems which arise through inequality. The way institutions, such as the criminal
justice system and the police, deal with ethnic minority groups contributes to ongoing stigma and discrimination, especially that of young males as
their actions influence external perceptions of the general public towards ethnic minorities, thus allowing for continued racial abuse and discrimination.
This essay will focus on the disparities of young black and minority ethnic (BME) males in the criminal justice system and identify intersectional
influences overrepresentation within the system in order to recognise the inequalities these people face and promote social justice.

strongly under represents racial minorities in its tenured staff. This lack of diversity exemplifies a structure of privilege at Southwestern that
disproportionately furthers the interests of white students and professors and excludes racial minorities from the same experiences. First, the
possible causes for this lack of diversity must be shown as to expose this structure of privilege here at Southwestern. One factor that plays a major
role in the hiring of racial minorities especially at positions thought of as very professional, which professors fall under is how society defines
professionalism. The way we visual the word professional in American society is very stigmatized and obviously benefits the dominant group. Most of
the time we picture a white male body in a suit with short, straight hair and is well groomed. None of these indicators point to a minority body as being

Ethnic minority disadvantage in the labour market
This research explores differences between ethnic groups in labour market participation (unemployment, employment and hours worked) and
employment status (low, mid and high skilled occupation levels) for those in work.
It examines whether there is 'clustering' into particular occupations for some ethnic groups, and looks at how much geography matters for employment
and job status for different ethnic groups.
This paper finds that:
In terms of unemployment, the overwhelming picture is one of continuing ethnic minority disadvantage compared with the White British majority

The Importance Of Leisure And Ethnic Minorities In Canada
Introduction Today, Canadian cities are more diverse than they have been at any point in history. Over the last 20 years, the number of Canada's
visible minorities has increased from 5 percent to 19 percent (Stodolska M., 2015). Commonly, immigrants will arrive with a strong determination to
be successful in their everyday lives and to acquire new knowledge and language skills. The people with the most drive to succeed in these areas tend
to have a more effective adaptation to their new country (McNeely, C. A et al., 2017). A healthy transition to a new country can be realised by many
aspects throughout the resettlement process, most are the characteristics of the "host" community.
Leisure and Ethnic Minorities
Leisure Constraints The importance of diversity can sometimes be taken for granted. But there is no doubt that Canada is a better and more successful
country because of it. The ability and readiness of a majority population and the way they accept immigrants has been proven to have a high impact on
how well these immigrants can adapt to their new environment (Tirone, S., & Pedlar, A., 2000). Distinct cultural identities of ethnic minorities can be
persistently challenged. Even with discrimination and segregation almost eliminated from our society there are still a few constraints that can hinder
adaptation and feel more like acculturation. Acculturation can refer to the ways in which immigrants accept and follow dominant values because of
pressure exerted from the

generally like to be praised for their success and efforts and bask in the approval they receive from their peers, but when they fail why is it that many
cast the blame to society and not take into account their own actions. Many believe that we as individuals control their own destiny and thus they must

Ethnic Minorities in America
In the United States the term "minority" often infers membership within an ethnic or cultural minority group. However, this term also encompasses
other groups that lack equality, such as women, homosexuals and people with disabilities. By definition, the hearing majority classifies Deaf people as
minorities because of their inability to hear. Yet linguists and social scientists argue that the basis of Deaf people's status as aminority group is not one
of disability, but as a cultural and linguistic minority (Lane, Hoffmeister and Bahan: 1996: 335–6). In order to assert that Deaf people are a linguistic

Unequal treatment and the lack of power are phenomena Deaf people have endured throughout time because of their inability to hear. Historically
hearing people viewed deafness as a defect of the mind and body and they did not afford the Deaf the right to an education, own property or sign
contracts.
Deaf people have long been subjugated by hearing people in all areas of life. The most blatant act of audism occurred in the education of Deaf
children. From 1880 until today hearing people have dictated that the method of education utilized should be one that enables the Deaf to more readily
assimilate into the mainstream society. In order to achieve this goal, Deaf children were forced to wear auditory trainers (machines that supposedly
allowed them to listen to teachers' voices) and were slapped with rulers if they attempted to sign or gesture out of frustration. (Graybill video) The
focus of Deaf education was not about teaching Deaf children material appropriate to grade level but altering behavior and improving speech ability.
Even with such an antagonistic environment the Deaf were forced into obtaining an education – but for what means? Until 1880 many Deaf people
worked as teachers of the Deaf, but after the Milan Conference of 1880, which decreed that all instruction of Deaf be done through spoken language,
Deaf teachers were terminated and forced into menial labor. Even with the increased

Minority Status Stress

  • 1. Minority Status Stress Racial and ethnic minority college students: Traditional college age students, ages 18 – 24, who identify within a racial or ethnic minority population, attending college and wanting to enter into the work force within their field of study. African Americans make up 13.3% of the United States population, Hispanics/Latinxs are 17.8%, Asians are 5.7%, Native Americans and Alaska Natives are 1.3%, and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are .2% (United, 2016). Enrollment for minority college students has been increasing (Krogstad & Fry, 2014). From 1996 – 2012, college enrollment among Hispanics ages 18 – 24, has increase 240% and African American enrollment has increase 72% (Krogstad & Fry, 2014). Racial/ethnic minority college students are often faced with unique stressors, such as minority status stress (Cokley, McClain, Enciso, & Martinez (2013). Minority status stress is caused by factors such as racism, discrimination, educational hegemony, microaggressions, and feelings of not belonging on a college campus (Cokley, et al., 2013). Minority status stress can lead to imposter feelings, which has been linked to negative mental health concerns, such as depression (Cokley, et al., 2013). According to the 2007 – 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, the college remediation rate for Hispanics/Latinxs was 43% and 41% for African Americans (Roscoe, 2015). • 2. Reflection Of Minority Families And Minority Gays And... Minority Families and Minority Gays and Lesbains" about a specfic model to uphold. Morales' model ends with "Integration of Communities," a stage when LGBTQ people of color attempt to bridge the gap between their ethnic and sexual identities. In furtherance to this aid, Kerry Poynter has over fifteen years of experience working with LGBTQ+ students in higher education at a number of institutions including Duke University, Columbia University, and New York University in addition to her her M.A in Administration of College Student Affairs in Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology and her partner Jamie Washington write for the New Directions for Student Service Journal on "Multiple identities: Creating community on campus for LGBT students" contributing to this ideology. They add the essential point that, "LGBTQ people of color have three broad options regarding integration of their communities: identification with multiple groups; identification with one group, to the exclusion of others; and identification with one group at a given time" (Poynter & Washington, 2005). This is an aspect that places a measurable toll. One way many LGBTQ people of color overcome the barriers to integration is by establishing their own communities. Groups that share sexual orientation and ethnic background can be essential for helping individuals find support and empowerment. The fraction of LGBTQ–POC population elicit more acts of violence with this two– toned identity. This can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Minority Discrimination : The Work Force Minority Discrimination in the Work Force La Troy King English Composition II Professor Sarah Syrjanen April 6, 2015 Abstract Discrimination is nothing new to our society or is it something that should be taken lightly and for many decades our Nation has endured many conflicts that have tested the will of Americans over the decades and it is evident that as we have become more diverse so too has our workforce. Although, we are in the twenty first century the goal is to understand why prejudice and discrimination is still so prevalent and how we can do better while trying to bring together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences still has proven to be an issue that minorities are constantly fighting as they struggle to find there place in society. Through an array of well–educated researchers showing how diversity is nothing new to our society, but if we are to continue to grow and move forward we must be able to understand that with diversification we can foster a strong and inclusive economy that is built to last and nurture a nation that will continue to lead the world as standard setter. Discrimination is a Detriment in Today's Work Force The topic of minorities in the workforce and how the struggle to accomplish equal treatment in today's workforce is nothing new to our society. For centuries we have been concerned that by bringing together our different backgrounds, skills, and experiences, as well as the many businesses of this great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Women And Racial Minorities Are Marginalized If you take a moment and try to do a head count of how many women and racial minorities there are in public office right now, you would be astonished with the lack of diversity in politics. Minority groups such as women and non–white individuals are prone to different treatment in society compared to male and white individuals, and politics is no exception. Generally, there are 37 states in which there are less than 10 percent of women representatives in single or lower houses (UN Women, 2016). In addition, the Congress consists of 80 percent white male (Washington Post, 2015). It is pretty evident based on these numbers who are underrepresented in politics. Throughout this essay, it would be depicted how women and racial minorities are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women in Politics: In the Past To begin with, the fight for formal representation of women in politics was extensive and difficult. Before 1916, voting is a privilege mainly restricted for men. During this time, women's freedom is very limited. Married women can own property, but cannot sell it without the agreement with her husband. In addition, according to Manitoba's Act Respecting Married Women, although a woman is allowed to have ownership of her property, any earnings she makes goes to her spouse. Only until 1872, did married women obtain the right to their own wage free from their spouses' control. Moreover, the first woman in Canada and in the British Empire to be appointed to a court occurred in 1914. Finally, in 1916, women in Manitoba were the first to acquire the right to vote and run for office. Furthermore, Mary Ellen Smith became the first Canadian female cabinet minister and Agnes Macphail became the first woman elected in the House of Commons in 1921. Although women finally achieved the right to vote and run for office, the number of women who attained seats in the House of Commons were very little. The reason for that is because of the following three factors: 1) people perceive politics as a masculine pursuit, 2) women were constrained by responsibilities such as child–rearing and home–making which prevented them to gain experiences ... • 5. Cultural Appropriation And Its Effects On Minority Culture In Western culture, people seldom realize the amount of cultural appropriation that occurs around them. Westerners are blinded by cultural mockery and cultural appropriation without realizing its offensive effects to minority groups. During the Halloween holiday, in Western culture, people of all ages dress up in a variety of costumes such as horror themed, fairy tale themed, job themed, cultural themed and much more. Harvard University members have argued that a cultural themed costume is a form of cultural appropriation. Also in Westernculture, in the music industry, white artists have utilized and exploited aspects from minority cultures to boost their fame. Costumes, props, ideas, music, and others considered as cultural appropriation is often overlooked but it is apparent when closely examined. In countries that celebrate Halloween such as the United States and Canada, it is a tradition to dress up in various types of costume themes. Some people dress up in cultural costumes or religious costumes. Herman Bhupal and Judy Park from Harvard University have addressed that dressing in cultural or religious costumes for Halloween, "can serve as mechanisms for cultural appropriation" (This Halloween, Choose Respect). Cultural appropriation is the adoption of standards and aspects from another culture when the culture is a minority group. Some people may agree that wearing cultural clothing as Halloween costumes may be offensive to those of whose culture is being mocked as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Health Disparities And Health Care For Minorities Introduction Racial bias in medicine leads to worse care for minorities is an article from U.S News & world report on the website http://health.usnews.com /health–news/patient–advice/articles/2016–02–11/racial–bias–in–medicine–leads–to–worse–care–for–minorities. In this article, the experience of a medical doctor is used to shed light on the subject of racial bias/ discrimination in health care and how it is affecting health outcome of racial and ethnic minority. "Race or ethnic group is a major social factor that influences health in the U.S Braveman 387. Health inequity is at the center stage of public health discussion. Understanding the upstream factors that causes inequities and disparities can help to bridge the gap of inequality. Eliminating health disparity will protect and improve the health of racial and ethnic minority population, which is consistent with the principle of public health–improving and protecting health of populations. Concepts and analysis The article is based on the experience of a Dr. Ron Wyatt, a reputable medical doctor/ patient safety officer, who sought medical care in a hospital when he had a fever of 104 degrees. The hospital was referred to as an award winning hospital. The article suggested that he received lackluster and substandard care from racially biased medical personnel. • 7. Minorities In Qualitative Research The process in finding one's identity can be difficult, especially as there are many factors that may alter an individual's actions or thoughts about themselves. After deconstructing several articles by academic researchers it was evident that the process of one's self identification stems mostly from the way in which we communicate and interact with other cultures (also known as interculturalities). Each journal article posed a different aspect to the research, while still showing patterns and overlap that correlated with the results found in the other articles. The researched used different methodologies in order to conclude with credible findings. The methodologies included, interviews, questionnaires/surveys, case studies, online–chats, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most common debate between a minority group and a majority group are the ideas around religion and it is Elyakim Kislev (2012) who argued that, "[there are] challenges faced by religious groups in a society with a non–religious majority." Throughout both McGraw Hill– Higher Education's work (2004) and Elyakim Kislev's (2012) research, the idea of a four step model was introduced. However, majorities and minorities do not share the exact same steps, which can cause different outlooks to arise. Minorities emerge with the four strategies/methods which include; integration, also known as participation in the majority culture while still holding on to their own, separation or rejection of the majority culture and only accepting their own, assimilation or the rejection of their own culture and acceptance of the majority culture and finally marginalization, which focuses on the rejection of both the majority culture and their own. The majority on the other hand show the same integration step (but participating or interacting with the minority group) and then are followed by "acceptance, resistance and then redefinition and reintegration" (McGraw–Hill, 2004)." Kislev (2012) argues that the most ideal model or step would be, "solely based on the acceptance of both cultures." Kislev's (2012) study also examined that the ability to, "[take] from both cultures [would] be enough to increase the emotional well–being and educational achievements of minorities." By acknowledging how different people between the two classes (minority and majority) accept both their culture and other cultures, it gives insight into how they may shape their identities and ultimately, how they may treat ... • 8. Minority Student Diversity Abstract Within the last decade or so, the number of minority students and "first generation students" enrolling, attending and graduating from colleges in the US has increased significantly despite the rising cost of enrollment. This increase is due to the available scholarships, funding opportunities, affirmative action or quota to be met by these institutions. The shift in the number of minority students graduating has also affected the diversity of people in the workplace. Although discrimination legally ended more than 40 years ago with the Civil Rights Movement, the ongoing battle of minority people in the United States trying to assimilate into a culture and justice system that does not work in their favor has continued although it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... White students represent 75% of the students at the top 468 colleges in the country even though they are only 62% of the country's college–age population (Fletcher, 2013). On the other hand 67% of black students and 75% of Latino students attend open–access colleges. Black and Latino students make up 37% of students at open access schools but only 15% of students at the nation's top colleges while making up 33% of the country's college age population (Fletcher,2013). Although black and Latino students are attending college at higher rates, they are not given the tools necessary to graduate and succeed at the same rates as their white counterparts. 30% of black and Latino students with an A averages in high school end up in community colleges, as compared with 22% of white students (Fletcher, 2013). Anthony Carnevale explains this phenomena saying, "The higher– education system is colorblind in theory but in fact operates, at least in part, as a systematic barrier to opportunity for many blacks and Hispanics, many of whom are college–qualified but tracked into overcrowded and under–funded colleges, where they are less likely to develop fully or to graduate (Fletcher, 2013)." Carnevale further explains that the issue is not particularly with the students but the system that does not support them. Michael Dannenberg, director of higher education and education finance policy at the Education Trust, noted "What individual colleges do often can make all the difference in the world between a student graduating or leaving with a pile of debt and no degree. • 9. Stereotypes In Minority Report Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future murder. Set in early 21st century Washington, DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these psychics, referred to as pre–cognitives (or "pre–cogs") to generate not only the name of the victim and perpetrator, but also the evidence against them: hence the crime of murder is reduced to a black and white picture. Anytime the Pre–cogs' visions are in conflict a Minority Report is generated, yet it is also destroyed except for what the pre–cog who predicted it remembers deep within their mind. John Anderton is the Chief–of–Police of PreCrime, a department of the police that deals with murder and uses pre–cogs. His son was kidnapped, driving him to PreCrime, and preventing further loss of innocent life. His faith in the system is rooted his loss, and up to his accusation, unfaltering. His faith begins to falter when he discovers that there is missing data regarding some of the victims and perpetrators. This leads him to question the system, which eventually leads those in charge to arrange for his arrest for the future murder of Jim Crow. Convinced of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A person can die from a physical illness, viruses and infections. A person can die from an accident. A person can commit suicide. Finally a person can be murdered by another person. What if murders could be prevented? In P.K.Dick's story The Minority Report, and in Spielberg's film The Minority Report, the future can be altered by using incredible technology. The success of Spielberg's adaptation of Dick's short story to film can be determined by the way each was presented. The Minority Report by Spielberg is about a one man conspiracy to keep pre crime up and running. In the book by Dick, there is a larger conspiracy to destroy precrime. The final results are opposite as well; in the book precrime was maintained and still operational. In the movie, precrime was shut down and destroyed. The methods of precrime are also different. In the book, there are three precogs which mutter an indecipherable language, which a machine interprets into images of a murder. Then a card comes out of the machine with the name of the killer and name of the victim on it. Spielberg made a more modern method out of this. In the movie, images are taken directly from the three precogs brain and then interpreted by a person who tries to find out the location of the murder. Also there are two wooden balls made, one with the name of the killer and the other with the name of the victim, on them. The movie also goes deeper into the creation of precrime, how crack babies whom had an odd gift/curse of dreaming of murder became used to prevent murder. It also shows why Anderton joined precrime, to make sure no one else would suffer like he did when he lost his son. The precogs in the book and movie are very different. First off their names in the book are Donna, Jerry and Mike. In the movie their names are Agatha, Arthur and Dashiell. The movie also involves the precogs, or at least one of them, more into the story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Differences Between Minority And Minority Groups Abstract This study explores the relationships between majority and minority groups and their awareness of blatant and subtle prejudice, by priming either common or dual identity. It was hypothesized that due to their marginalization, minority groups will be more aware of both subtle and blatant prejudice and that those primed with dual identity will show a similar heightened awareness. The results demonstrated that majority groups were more aware of both types of prejudice, contradicting many previous results in this area. This study was conducted on an Australian population, making it unique, and possibly explaining the contrary results. However, it has also been suggested that the social stigma surrounding racism in our society has increased the awareness by majority groups, as they strive to be politically correct and avoid judgment by their peers. Another worthy discussion point is the internalization of prejudice by minority groups living in a majority–dominated society. How Common and Dual Identity Can Influence Majority and Minority Awareness of Subtle and Blatant Prejudice In modern society, prejudiced ideas and values are present amongst majority–dominated societies (Banaji & Devos, 2005). Minority groups, and individuals with a heightened sense of cultural affiliation to their ethnicity, have been shown to be more aware of subtle prejudice than majority groups (Operario & Fiske, 2001). Previous research in the area of racial prejudice has also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Summary Of Minorities In The Rise Of The Rocket Girls To be treated as lesser or unworthy is a terrible thing. What happened to 'all men are created equal'? I guess that only applies if you are a straight, white man. A minority is a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and are often subjected to different treatment. That said, minorities were mistreated and shoved to the back of history. In Aria by Richard Rodriguez the Rodriguez family feel what it means to be aminority in their everyday life. They're held at arm's length by the people around them, and struggle to assimilate. In Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt it's not race that sets these women behind. It is simply the fact that they are women. In both novels society is presenting more challenges to a certain group, but that does not stop them. Even today minorities are still at a disadvantage. That does not stop people from pursuing their goals and dreams. As a student perseverance is needed because you cannot give up easily or you just will not make it. Aria has many counter arguments and debates revolving around assimilation. To better visualize the meaning ofassimilation imagine having a group of blue blocks all exactly the same. You bring in a few different colored blocks red, yellow, green ones. In order for them to fit in you paint them all blue. Isn't that erasing part of who they are? That was a main point in why bilingual children shouldn't be forced to learn a new language in order to learn. Supporters of bilingual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Essay on Minorities in Song of Solomon Minorities within Minorities in Song of Solomon In a study about minorities, the groups that are differing from the dominant culture are seen as homogeneous. But, if we look deeper into the groups, we can see that there are distinctions among the minorities concerning lifestyle and social status. It is impressive how Morrison reflects Macon's desires in life with the route of the Sunday rides: "...through the rough part of town, over the bypass downtown, and headed for the wealthy white neighborhoods" (32). The difference between Milkman and his father is that he was born rich and does not have the ambitions of his father. But, because of the way he was raised, he cannot prevent himself from acting different from the African–American society. In fact, we see that he has only Guitar as a friend. He likes to spend time with women in parties. The result of his wealthy life and the fact that he was raised in a city shows us his distinction from the society when he arrives in Shalimar. When Milkman talks with the shopkeeper Mr. Solomon, he grows up the anticipation of the people around him. The reasons why they are offended by Milkman is clearly stated in the following passage: They looked with hatred at the city Negro who could buy a car as if it were a bottle of whiskey because the one he had was broken. And what's more, who had said so in front of them. Ethnic Minorities and Elder Employment Essay An ethnic minority is a group of people who differ in race or color or in national, religious, or cultural origin from the dominant group–often the majority population–of the country in which they live. The different identity of an ethnic minority may be displayed in any number of ways, ranging from distinctive customs, lifestyles, language or accent, dress, and food preferences to particular attitudes, moral values, and economic or political beliefs espoused by members of the group. Characteristically the minority is recognized, but it is not necessarily accepted by the larger society in which its members live. • 16. The Pros And Cons Of Minority Voting Historically in America, voting has been a relatively discriminatory practice. It has limited and deprived many individuals of many diverse races, ethnicities, and walks of life from casting their votes to select the individual who they feel is most educated, and skilled to represent their interests. Not only has this been proven to be wrong by discriminating minority groups in voting, it also has proved to be a process, which minimizes the largest growing demographics in the country. Furthermore, with millennials growing to become more politically active, minority groups are becoming more politically involved than ever. Taking this into account an important question that is raised by the author William Eskridge in his book "Legislation and Statutory Interpretation" is "Would minorities be better off with more representatives who had to pay attention to their interests because they are a powerful and organized constituency, rather than with a few representatives of minority districts who specialize in protecting only their interests?" (Eskridge,Frickley,& Garrett, 2006, pp.55). The answer to this question is yes. Minorities would be better off with more representatives who had to pay attention to their interests, because they are a powerful constituency. Currently there are three historical methods to dilute minority voting strengths. These are pointed out best in the short film by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) political scientist Laughlin McDonald. Here Mr. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Bradford riots in 1995, and other public outcries showed the growing animosity that was being felt toward the police by minority ethnic communities. Another factor, which led the opinions of minority ethnic citizens of the police to become additionally hostile, is the ever advancing statistical and research evidence of racism within the police force. In 1978 Stuart Hall et al showed most clearly how, largely on the basis of pre–existing stereotypes minority ethnic people (in particular black people) were being criminalized and subjected to extraordinary policing and punishment. Both these factors increased the feelings of hatred for the police amongst minority ethnic communities. This was then furthered by the subsequent failings of the Scarman report. These included his failure to explain properly in his report the main reason why black people were so angry with the police this was to do with the oppressive policing that they were being subjected to. He was unsuccessful in looking at police powers (particularly stop and search) (Bridges 1982, Howe 1988 cited in Bowling et al 2002) and most importantly he failed to take a proper account of 'institutional racism'. Canada is multicultural country that divides its population into two categories; visible minorities and non visible minorities. It has been noticed that the number of visible minorities is increasing per year in Canada (Black, 2009 p.71). The number and impact of visible minority citizens of Canada is developing in terms of percentage of the population. Visible minorities are also allowed to take an interest in different fields, for example social, governmental, private limited and politics. They also have rights in all terms same as to white people. Many immigrants from different countries based on work permit or study permit came here in canada. She conducted a study to show that the pictures and information provided in school packet materials mailed to prospective students had a large impact on the likelihood of them contacting the school for more information. The article titled Use of Application Materials for Recruitment of EthnicMinority Students in Psychology questioned on page 818 "whether these packets are equally effective in recruiting ethnic minority applicants" (Bernal, Barron & Leary, 1983) as they are in attracting white applicants. The hypothesis explored the idea that programs which stated a higher proportion of ethnic minority grad students would be judged as having a higher chance of recruiting ethnic minorities. Specifically, Dr. Martha Bernal explored how clinical psychology programs in the United States displayed diversity within the packets mailed out to prospective students. The set–up involved mailing out a letter to 107 programs offered across the US which were accredited at the time, in which a fictitious student requested brochures and other materials about the clinical program offered, as well as materials on the number of minorities within the program itself. • 24. The Importance Of Minority Status In America Minority status has long since been viewed in a not–so–positive light. From the reflex many people have to lock their doors when they see a homeless person or a person of color, to stereotyping and assumptions based on institutionalized racism, to discrimination, minority status has a part to play in all of it. Similarly, many people have the idea that deaf people cannot do anything for themselves because they are "disabled". Even though America was once hailed as a melting pot because of the diversity of its citizens, things like "you're in America now, speak English" are said in today's America. While being defined as a minority isn't inherently bad, it has become an excuse for some members of the majority to treat minorities as second–class citizens. People of color have been persecuted in this country since it was "discovered" by Christopher Columbus. Starting with the genocide of the Native Americans, the slavery of African Americans, continuing into the institutionalizedracism that exists to this day. "For generations, people have used their mixed–race backgrounds to gain advantages in society. Many of those who were half black, for instance, "passed" for white to avoid discrimination" (Hu, 2012). The participation in civil rights movements, like the major one in the 1950 's and 1960 's conducted by the blacks, is a way for a minority, or "dominated," group to empower themselves socially and politically. Minority status is still prevalent in our current political system and will continue to have a large, mostly negative, effect on the representation of these minority groups until a change is made. I think that with time will come a balance of power between groups and it will no longer be a minority versus majority situation, but a more level playing field that has an even say it what shapes our political lives. Race can be defined as groupings among people that are understood as having a physical and hereditary bias. Examples of these groupings are generalizing someone as black, white, yellow or brown. That being said, race is a social, not biological, construction that makes it easier for one group to assume "domination" over another. These groups can be classified by physical differences which can cause cultural differences. There has obviously been a huge amount of racial mixture since those times, and the concept of race now is just an archaic social construct. 2."Human Variation is continuous" These racial categories are completely arbitrary. There is no way a clear line can be drawn between the races, and all races relate on a gradient today. 3."Human Variation is nonconcordant" What he means by this is that traits vary independently of other traits. Since race only really correlates with skin, hair, and eye color, there is no basis for the claim that certain diseases go along with a certain race. Sickle cell anemia may affect equatorial Africans, but also Greeks and Turks. This shows how the traits vary independently. 4."Within Group Variation is much greater than variation among ' races'" There are many studies that show within closely related racial groups, like Hopi Indians, there is only about ... Such an impression is not the result of nothingness, but that of shallow knowledge of certain empires that prevailed in the pre–modern and early modern world. However, before we get into details about how minorities were dealt with, we have to define our terms. The first term to be defined is "minority"; which according to Richard T. Schaefer means "a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than members of a dominant or majority group." There are certain characteristics for minority groups. The first is that they have a distinguishing physical or cultural trait. Such a case is manifested regarding the Hijab in France, or the use of Kurdish language by Lebanese Kurds. The second is being treated unequally, and having less control over one's life, as was the case with Africans in South Africa. Kant elaborates his standards pertaining ethics in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, where Pre–crime can be further understood. Kant's first proposition is an action has moral worth only if it is done out of duty, such as when someone who has absolutely no interest in donating to the poor does so out of duty. His second proposition is that action has moral worth not because of its aim, but because of the maxim on which it is based, meaning that it would not matter if the intent failed, as long as the principle was good. His third proposition is that duty is the necessity of an action from respect for the law, such as if an individual is in an embarassing spot, they could will the lie, but not will the maxim to lie. Kant argues that everything is secretly done in self benefit, an example can be an individual helping another merely for the fulfilled feeling. Comparing Kantian aspects to Minority Report can be done with ease. Kant's second proposition, that an action has moral worth because of its maxim, can be further understood in the Pre–crime stance. The Pre–crime organization is in place in order to stop murders. Individuals, such as Anderton, are sought out to be arrested before they even comprehend the crime. • 35. The Importance Of Minority Rights In America "America is the number 1 nation in the world!" is a common phrase we hear time and time again. American citizens, in my opinion, have a distorted view on how "awesome" our country is. America was founded on the idea of freedom – at least freedom for white men at the time. While we have grown and made bounds for the rights of minorities like African Americans, Hispanics and women; there is still room to grow. So many of our citizens feel disenfranchised by our government and that our implemented democracy doesn't grant them the same rights as others. This is usually a feeling felt by those in minority groups. Many in the majority don't realize that there are these discrepancies in our democracy because it's not something that affects them. That is one of the obstacles, many turn a blind–eye to the injustices they see within our democracy because they do not want to get involved or they want the status quo to stay intact. The majority's desire to stay on–top in our country is a huge influence in how those in the minority then view their abilities. Many minority members feel hopeless and that despite speaking up a power shift to equality will never be attainable. There is a profound lack of representation of minority groups in offices of power. As discussed in this class, there have only even been eight African American US Senators, and only two currently in the Senate now. This lack of representation harms minority youth because when they have grand dreams of changing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Importance Of Ethnic Minorities Society consists of complex processes which affect different groups in different ways and some groups, for various reasons, can experience high rates of disadvantage and oppression. Multiple aspects of a person's identity can create significant bias, resulting in disproportionate treatment. Young black males for example, especially those from lower socio–economic backgrounds, suffer discrimination considerably more on the basis of their different attributes; being young, male and belonging to an ethnic minority group whilst a status of being from poorer backgrounds further disadvantages their opportunities and their position in society (Solanke, 2009). Intersectional frameworks play a key role by enabling a deeper insight into social institutions and practices concerning ethnic minorities and social problems which arise through inequality. The way institutions, such as the criminal justice system and the police, deal with ethnic minority groups contributes to ongoing stigma and discrimination, especially that of young males as their actions influence external perceptions of the general public towards ethnic minorities, thus allowing for continued racial abuse and discrimination. This essay will focus on the disparities of young black and minority ethnic (BME) males in the criminal justice system and identify intersectional influences overrepresentation within the system in order to recognise the inequalities these people face and promote social justice. • 37. Racial Minorities And Its Impact On American Society While Southwestern boasts itself as an extremely progressive, liberal institution. The university does meet many of the requirements to call itself these things it's staff is not very diverse. In just the year 2015 Southwestern granted tenure to the first black male in its history Dr. Reggie Byron. Dr. Bryon became one of just five males of color tenured at Southwestern out of 91 tenured faculty. This represents that the faculty at SouthwesternUniversity strongly under represents racial minorities in its tenured staff. This lack of diversity exemplifies a structure of privilege at Southwestern that disproportionately furthers the interests of white students and professors and excludes racial minorities from the same experiences. First, the possible causes for this lack of diversity must be shown as to expose this structure of privilege here at Southwestern. One factor that plays a major role in the hiring of racial minorities especially at positions thought of as very professional, which professors fall under is how society defines professionalism. The way we visual the word professional in American society is very stigmatized and obviously benefits the dominant group. Most of the time we picture a white male body in a suit with short, straight hair and is well groomed. None of these indicators point to a minority body as being professional. This becomes a form of colorblind racism where the inequality of racial minorities is contributed to things that are not racial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Importance Of Leisure And Ethnic Minorities In Canada Introduction Today, Canadian cities are more diverse than they have been at any point in history. Over the last 20 years, the number of Canada's visible minorities has increased from 5 percent to 19 percent (Stodolska M., 2015). Commonly, immigrants will arrive with a strong determination to be successful in their everyday lives and to acquire new knowledge and language skills. The people with the most drive to succeed in these areas tend to have a more effective adaptation to their new country (McNeely, C. A et al., 2017). A healthy transition to a new country can be realised by many aspects throughout the resettlement process, most are the characteristics of the "host" community. Leisure and Ethnic Minorities Leisure Constraints The importance of diversity can sometimes be taken for granted. But there is no doubt that Canada is a better and more successful country because of it. The ability and readiness of a majority population and the way they accept immigrants has been proven to have a high impact on how well these immigrants can adapt to their new environment (Tirone, S., & Pedlar, A., 2000). Distinct cultural identities of ethnic minorities can be persistently challenged. Even with discrimination and segregation almost eliminated from our society there are still a few constraints that can hinder adaptation and feel more like acculturation. Acculturation can refer to the ways in which immigrants accept and follow dominant values because of pressure exerted from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. What Does It Mean For A Minority? Within most societies there are divisions between the different groups that is composed of, but what is ironic about this is that a society essentially is a unit of individuals who coexist for mutual benefit. Within the constructs of these divisions there are many individuals who feel that they are inherently disadvantaged because they are a part of the minority of their respective society. In terms of their economic stature it can be easily argued that they are disadvantaged because; those of the minority are typically impoverished, which would elude that their general development will be different than those of privileged backgrounds. But what I want to find out is if societies construct their laws and regulations to intentionally set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Does white people no longer being in the majority equal white people no longer being the most powerful group? The caller a Charles Blow basically felt it was because of minorities joining the ranks of positions in power swaying the cultural trend. But what does that mean for minorities in the lower constructs of society? Are they at a disadvantage or do they have the upper hand when it comes to achieving success. Individuals generally like to be praised for their success and efforts and bask in the approval they receive from their peers, but when they fail why is it that many cast the blame to society and not take into account their own actions. Many believe that we as individuals control their own destiny and thus they must accept that it is up to them to succeed whether or not the world as the know it is against them. Orlando Patterson's A Poverty of The Mind examines the plight of African–American male youth. His views that African American males were subject what he calls a" deep seated dogma" which has been derived from bigoted studies throughout history. Patterson is extremely accurate when he notes that on how inaccurate these studies have proven, namely statistics based on the socioeconomic status of these individuals as he draws parallels to other nations with similar poverty statistics but different outcomes. He then begins to imply that society is at fault for categorizing black youth and not doing everything in their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Ethnic Minorities in America Essay Ethnic Minorities in America In the United States the term "minority" often infers membership within an ethnic or cultural minority group. However, this term also encompasses other groups that lack equality, such as women, homosexuals and people with disabilities. By definition, the hearing majority classifies Deaf people as minorities because of their inability to hear. Yet linguists and social scientists argue that the basis of Deaf people's status as aminority group is not one of disability, but as a cultural and linguistic minority (Lane, Hoffmeister and Bahan: 1996: 335–6). In order to assert that Deaf people are a linguistic and cultural minority in America the characteristics of a minority group must first be defined. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Humphrey and Alcorn, 1995: 85) Unequal treatment and the lack of power are phenomena Deaf people have endured throughout time because of their inability to hear. Historically hearing people viewed deafness as a defect of the mind and body and they did not afford the Deaf the right to an education, own property or sign contracts. Deaf people have long been subjugated by hearing people in all areas of life. The most blatant act of audism occurred in the education of Deaf children. From 1880 until today hearing people have dictated that the method of education utilized should be one that enables the Deaf to more readily assimilate into the mainstream society. In order to achieve this goal, Deaf children were forced to wear auditory trainers (machines that supposedly allowed them to listen to teachers' voices) and were slapped with rulers if they attempted to sign or gesture out of frustration. (Graybill video) The focus of Deaf education was not about teaching Deaf children material appropriate to grade level but altering behavior and improving speech ability. Even with such an antagonistic environment the Deaf were forced into obtaining an education – but for what means? Until 1880 many Deaf people worked as teachers of the Deaf, but after the Milan Conference of 1880, which decreed that all instruction of Deaf be done through spoken language, Deaf teachers were terminated and forced into menial labor.
