I presented this session for the first time at STC India Annual Conference, 2013. I presented it again in April 2014 as part of the Pune Learning Sessions conducted by STC India.
Dick Bruna, the creator of Miffy, practiced minimalism without labeling it so. I use these slides for a highly interactive session, where participants understand the beauty of minimalism through artworks of Miffy.
After the session, the participants don't feel daunted by minimalism. They befriend it as a creative approach that makes their content friendlier. The session also emphasizes how the brain works differently when practicing minimalism.
My presentation at TCWorld India 2015.
In this interactive workshop, the focus is on learning good writing with the help of a few design blunders. The session is about the design of writing that decides the usability of content. We have always heard people say (and probably said this ourselves), “One cannot teach good writing.” However, we all understand whether a piece of writing is good or bad. We can prove it by giving a set of reasons to support our opinion. Maybe there is a way to teach good writing. Visualizing a piece of writing helps in learning and teaching good writing. I am proposing a technique to learn good writing through visual reviews.
I delivered this session at STC India's Annual Conference in 2014, and then in the Pune Marathon Meet of STC India. The session discusses why it is the right time to start innovating and taking initiatives for technical communicators in India. The interactive session encourages technical communicators to understand what innovation is, and how to bring about creativity in technical content development.
The document discusses the concept of minimalism in technical documentation using the children's character Miffy as an example. It advocates for a minimalist approach that focuses on the user's tasks and scenarios rather than exhaustive documentation of all features. Some benefits of minimalism include simple, usable content that avoids overload while still being easy to find information. The document provides tips for authors to take a minimalist approach, such as focusing on tasks rather than features, and structuring documents around task flows.

https://apacheconeu2016.sched.org/event/8ULf/exploring-and-integrating-ux-in-open-source-software-development-victoria-bondarchuk-seoul-tech-society
The importance of introducing usability activities into free open source software development has been acknowledged in the research and by the community, yet FOSS products have been criticized for having little or no emphasis on usability. The decentralized and engineering-driven approach of open source projects can conflict with usability methodologies. We will review existing cases of UX design contribution to open source projects, discuss how designers can become part of the community and what engineers can do to improve usability of the software they build.

The document provides information about the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (BICT) degree program at Bahrain Polytechnic. It discusses the purpose and structure of the BICT degree, the career opportunities it provides, and the facilities and support available to BICT students. Key information covered includes the core skills developed in the first two years, the major specialization options available in years three and four, example companies that hire BICT graduates and provide internships, and the benefits of professional certification.
The document discusses the history and development of the software craftsmanship movement. It began in the 1990s with ideas around treating software development as a craft similar to other skilled trades. In the 2000s, these ideas saw renewed interest through Robert Martin's talks advocating for craftsmanship over poor quality code. This led to the creation of the Software Craftsmanship Manifesto, which outlined principles for developers to focus on quality, learning, and sharing knowledge. The document examines issues that led to interest in craftsmanship such as poor code quality and a lack of practical skills training. It presents craftsmanship as an alternative that emphasizes pride in work, learning from others, and stakeholder trust through

This document provides an overview of a presentation on integrating accessibility into an organization's web development life cycle. The presentation covers: 1) making the case that accessibility planning is an increasingly important issue due to legal requirements and inclusiveness; 2) how accessibility responsibilities should be shared across roles rather than seen as a separate task; and 3) common pitfalls to avoid, such as treating accessibility as an afterthought or relying too heavily on automated tools.
The document provides an overview of open source projects, discussing what open source is, how open source communities work, and tips for contributing to open source projects, including identifying relevant skills, finding a project to contribute to, and understanding how to engage with an open source community. It uses examples like Wikipedia, Linux, and OpenStack to illustrate open source trends and best practices for participation. The presentation aims to educate people on open source and lower barriers to contributing for the first time.
How we upgraded from the printed guide books to digital guide booksArpit Maheshwari
- The company transformed their printed classroom guide books into digital guide books to allow for on-the-spot registrations, reduce logistical challenges of shipping printed books globally, and protect their intellectual property.
- They developed a prototype digital guide viewer using their existing learning management system and gathered feedback from various stakeholders.
- Based on feedback, they enhanced the digital guides to distinguish them from other online courses, allow lifetime access, and take notes. A pilot program identified needed changes to instructions. The digital guides were then successfully implemented, saving $1 million annually while benefiting the environment.

Why Apache Kafka Clusters Are Like Galaxies (And Other Cosmic Kafka Quandarie...Paul Brebner
Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

UI5con 2024 - Bring Your Own Design SystemPeter Muessig
How do you combine the OpenUI5/SAPUI5 programming model with a design system that makes its controls available as Web Components? Since OpenUI5/SAPUI5 1.120, the framework supports the integration of any Web Components. This makes it possible, for example, to natively embed own Web Components of your design system which are created with Stencil. The integration embeds the Web Components in a way that they can be used naturally in XMLViews, like with standard UI5 controls, and can be bound with data binding. Learn how you can also make use of the Web Components base class in OpenUI5/SAPUI5 to also integrate your Web Components and get inspired by the solution to generate a custom UI5 library providing the Web Components control wrappers for the native ones.

Most of us are already aware of minimalism. We all talk about it. We all advocate it. Let’s stop and take a look at our workspace. How do we go about it?
What does Minimalism mean to you? Is it about writing less content? Is it about writing short sentences or paragraphs? Please explain minimalism in your words. (Make notes on a white board about people’s impression about minimalism.)
Here are the real benefits of minimalism. To users as well as to writers.
My definition of Minimalism is this – It’s a strategy for absolutely essential task-oriented information.
Before we go further in understanding minimalism, let’s meet Miffy. In the next few slides, I want you to observe the visuals and tell me why I must have chosen Miffy as the ambassador of Minimalism?

One day, a letter came for miff
Inviting her to stay
It was a letter from her friend
And Miffy said, “Hurray!”
Never in all her life had Miff
Been asked out on her own
Her mother took her to the bus
But she got in alone!
Miffy was thinking as she sat
When will the journey end?
She looked outside and at the stop
She saw her little friend.
“Miffy, Hello,” her friend called out
“We saw you sitting there!”
And then her mother smiled and said,
“How nice to see you here!”
Here are the other regular characters in Miffy stories. What do we see in them all? Observe every little detail and tell it to all of us.
White space or more background encourages kids to imagine the unsaid parts of the story. Minimalism also encourages users to explore the software on their own.
Small differentiators make it easier to use stencils. Reusability of content! Colors and shades – less elements make it easier to manage the content.
Today’s adults are also like children. Their attention span is decreasing day by day. If you keep it simple, users may fall in love with your software.
So what are the problems with the traditional way of documentation? What are the concerns that we want minimalism to address?
When I first started learning about minimalism, I was mistaking it for brevity. It’s a natural thing to happen. When I learned a few terms, such as the Nurnberg funnel, or the paradox of sense making, my brain was almost shocked and completely shaken. After reading about the usability studies that Dr. Carroll (a social scientist) and his colleagues conducted, and relating it to my everyday world, my understanding of minimalism started emerging. And then I reached a conclusion – Minimalism is a completely different style of writing and instructing. It is a paradigm shift.
So how do the deliverables differ? Let’s see an example.
How will we estimate the documentation pertaining to this screen?
One way of delivering Minimalistic content would be to add tool tips and write a brief help that instead of covering descriptions for each field only summarizes how to do the main task. The expert users may not even need the help page. They might look at the tooltips and make an effective use of the software. The naïve users, however, might want to look at the help to complete the task at hand. PDF is probably for more curious and studious minds. With the emergence of online docs, the use of PDF is already fading away.
What we learned from this example, is that minimalistic documentation does not necessarily mean less content. It means lesser processing of the content for the users. If users are able to find the absolutely right information at the right place immediately, we have surely delivered minimalistic documentation. This table summarizes the attributes of the traditional systems approach and of the minimalist approach.
John M Carroll and many others have written principles of Minimalism. This is my version of the same principles, the way I understand them. If I try to follow these principles in my everyday writing, I have already started evolving as a minimalist writer.
If you want to practice minimalism at an individual level, you must have a good grip on these four factors – User and Usage Pattern, Authoring Environment, Delivery Format, and Technical Depth.
Also, if minimalism is your personal objective, and not the company’s goal, don’t make it your primary focus. Your primary focus has to remain on completeness and accuracy. Minimalism has to be your secondary or tertiary focus as you see in this graphic.
Practice may not always make it perfect. But it always makes it permanent. You need to be wary of bad practice. Example – You can do this vs Do this. Not every time “do this” is going to be the right option.
Minimalism is often treated as a synonym to brevity. It is not. At sentence-level and paragraph-level, brevity definitely helps achieve minimalism. But it doesn’t ensure minimalistic content.
Minimalism is a collaborative approach. It forces us to see the software and docs as a whole, and not as separate deliverables. We are thinking more of the user experience now, far beyond the legal promise of delivering docs with every release.
Before you go back to your work environment all excited about minimalism, remember the challenges you need to overcome.
Very difficult till you get used to it. Why? Minimalism is not a natural process. Do you see minimalism in nature? Rather, you see abundance. That’s why, one may say that minimalism is a synthetic process, and that’s why more suited for technical writing, and not content writing or fiction. Where tone and voice are necessary. The natural way for a technical writer will be to look at the software and start documenting it. With minimalism, you need to focus more on users, and that’s why your writing does not remain natural for a first few days. Minimalism in that sense is an afterthought and it is unnatural for writers. However for users, it’s the most obvious way of receiving information.
Miffy ate the cake, so you can’t see it. And after finishing the cake, there was nothing to do here. So Miffy left! :)
