Overview:
The English alphabet has 26 letters, yet we use more than 26 sounds in our speech. In fact, American-English speakers use 59 sounds, and there are often many ways
to spell the same sound – sometimes dozens of ways. This is very confusing for beginning readers because letters only show how a word is spelled, not how it is spoken. We have identified all 400+ sound-spellings in
American English and organized them into 59 distinctly colored groups. With color, students can see how a word is spoken, and more quickly become aware of the nature
of the written language.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. My lesson is titled: The Importance of the apple. And what I am really trying to capture through my lesson is how and why the apple is one of the most important objects in Snow White. I focused on what the apple symbolized.
The objective for my lesson is…
I found a quote that kind of ties this whole lesson together and kind of drove me to do this lesson. It says although the symbolism of the apple has evolved throughout time, the apple has sustained its place in many cultures as a symbol for knowledge, prosperity, love, jealousy, and temptation. I got this quote from this website. (click on link and scroll) This takes you through different beliefs about the apple. It goes through mythical apples, pre-modern apples, and the modernized apple.
The materials you would need for this lesson include: a worksheet, rubric, construction paper, makers, scissors, and glue
The first thing you would do for this lesson is read snow white to the class. You then discuss what symbolism means. There are many different items in Snow White that symbolize something, but we are going to focus on the apple for this lesson. Next you explain that different cultures have different meanings for what an apple represents. These all contribute to our way of thinking for what the apple in Snow White means. Then you give them a handout listing a couple different cultures beliefs about the apple.
And then at the bottom of the handout, in the space provided, have them write what they think the apple in Snow White represents, this will be the guided activity. Have some students share what they think after they are done with that, this will be the informal evaluation. The main activity is making the 3D apple. You would go though how to do this and maybe show the video. You would also explain that they need to put words on the apples pieces that show that they have an interpretation of what the apple symbolizes.
You should ask the students questions throughout the lesson to challenge their thinking about the apple. Two examples are
You will need to explain what these vocabulary words, symbolism, culture, 3-Dimensional, mean incase the students do not know. They will get a better understanding out of the lesson if they understand these key concepts
This was another inspiration for doing the activity. This artists name is Richard Sweeney and he make 3 dimensional art out of paper. The website has a bunch of pictures of his artwork and gives an explanation as to why he uses paper to make his art.
We have a couple forms of evaluation. The informal evaluation, to check for their understanding, would be to ask some students to share what they think the apple symbolizes in Snow White. This continues off of the guided activity. The formal activity would be grading their actual finished art project.
This is the rubric for grading their art project. They would be graded on their quality, effort, use of words on the apple, and explanation of words when they present. The scores range from excellent to poor. I will take you through the excellent category to see what would be expected from their art. For quality, the student’s apple should be neatly colored and assembled properly. For effort, the student should put forth a lot of effort and they should have worked effectively with use of time given. For use of words, the student should use descriptive words that showed what they thought the apple represented. And for explanation of words, the student should explain why they used the words based on examples from the book.
If you were to have one or more students with a disability that affects their putting this art project together by themselves, have all of the students in the class make the 3D apple in pairs. Students can help each other and it will become a collaborative activity.
