Milano Centrale station opened in 1931 and was designed to resemble Washington D.C.'s Union Station. It serves over 330,000 passengers daily with 24 platforms. The station blends different architectural styles like Art Deco and has numerous sculptures depicting Fascist imagery. It is located near downtown Milan and underwent renovations from 2005-2010, including an expansion of its large glass and steel roof, the biggest in Italy. Milano Centrale is the second largest train station in the country and is a major transportation hub well connected to the city's metro system.
2. A BRIEF HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
The Central Station of Milan («Milano Centrale») was opened in
1931 after a long contest won in 1912 by architect Ulisse Stacchini
whose design was modeled after Union Station inWashington, DC.

The Stazione Centrale’s roof is the biggest in Italy and is made of glass and steel. Designed by the engineer
Alberto Fava thanks to the Futuristic idea of speed recalls somehow the image of an hangar. The total
weight of the roof is of 10.000 tons.
9. The «alta velocità» (high-speed) trains in Italy are
among the most modern and fast in Europe.
The Milan-Rome and Milan-Turin connections
from «Centrale» station are scheduled each hour.
From Milan Centrale are departing also many
regional connections (more from the close

underground stops far).
