This document discusses migrating from the H.323 protocol to the SIP protocol for visual communications. It provides an overview of the two protocols and compares them. H.323 was developed for video conferencing while SIP is more scalable and can better support unified communications by integrating presence, instant messaging, and other applications. The document also discusses trends in the market such as moving to on-demand conferencing and unifying voice, video, and data into a single collaboration system, both of which are better supported by SIP. Polycom is working to smoothly migrate customers from H.323 to SIP over the long term as the two protocols coexist during the transition period.
