Do you ever feel that your stream processor gets in the way of expressing business requirements? Most processors are frameworks, which are highly opinionated in the design and implementation of apps. Performing Complex Event Processing invariably leads to calling out to other technologies, but what if that integration didn’t require an RPC call or could be modeled into your stream itself? This talk will explore how to build rich domain, low latency, back-pressured, and stateful streaming applications that require very little infrastructure, using Akka Streams and the Alpakka Kafka connector.
We will explore how Alpakka Kafka maps to Kafka features in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of how to build a robust streaming platform. We’ll explore transactional message delivery, defensive consumer group rebalancing, stateful stages, and state durability/persistence. Akka Streams is built on top of Akka, an asynchronous messaging-driven middleware toolkit that can be used to build Erlang-like Actor Systems in Java or Scala. It is used as a JVM library to facilitate common streaming semantics within an existing or standalone application. It’s different from other stream processors in several ways. It natively supports back-pressure flow control inside a single JVM instance or across distributed systems to help prevent overloading downstream infrastructure. It’s perfect for modeling Complex Event Processing with its easy integration into existing apps and Akka Actor systems. Also, unlike most acyclic stream processors, Akka Streams can support sophisticated pipelines, or Graphs, by allowing the user to model cycles (loops) when there’s a need.

Event-based stream processing is a modern paradigm to continuously process incoming data feeds, e.g. for IoT sensor analytics, payment and fraud detection, or logistics. Machine Learning / Deep Learning models can be leveraged in different ways to do predictions and improve the business processes. Either analytic models are deployed natively in the application or they are hosted in a remote model server. In the latter you combine stream processing with RPC / Request-Response paradigm instead of direct doing direct inference within the application. This talk discusses the pros and cons of both approaches and shows examples of stream processing vs. RPC model serving using Kubernetes, Apache Kafka, Kafka Streams, gRPC and TensorFlow Serving. The trade-offs of using a public cloud service like AWS or GCP for model deployment are also discussed and compared to local hosting for offline predictions directly “at the edge”.

This talk will give an overview of different patterns and tools available in the Streams DSL API to deal with corrupted messages. Based on a real-life use case, it also includes valuable experiences from building and running Kafka Streams projects in production. The talk includes live coding and demonstrations.

At PayPal, as part of a massive datacenter migration initiative, Kafka team successfully moved all PayPal Kafka traffic across data centers. This initiative involved migrating 20+ Kafka clusters (1000+ broker and zookeeper nodes), as well as 60+ mirrormaker groups which seamlessly handle Kafka traffic volumes as high as 1 trillion messages per day. Throughout the course of this migration, applications required no modification, encountered 0% service outage, 0% message loss and duplicated messages. The whole migration process was fully transparent to Kafka applications.

Customer privacy is our top concern at Alexa, and as we build solutions, we face unique challenges when operating at scale such as supporting multiple applications with tens of thousands of transactions per second with several dependencies including near-real time inference endpoints at low latencies. Apache Flink helps us transform and discover metrics in near-real time in our solution. In this talk, we will cover the challenges that we faced, how we scale the infrastructure to meet the needs of ML teams across Alexa, and go into how we enable specific use cases that use Apache Flink on Amazon Kinesis Data Analytics to improve Alexa experiences to delight our customers while preserving their privacy.

At PayPal, as part of a massive datacenter migration initiative, Kafka team successfully moved all PayPal Kafka traffic across data centers. This initiative involved migrating 20+ Kafka clusters (1000+ broker and zookeeper nodes), as well as 60+ mirrormaker groups which seamlessly handle Kafka traffic volumes as high as 1 trillion messages per day. Throughout the course of this migration, applications required no modification, encountered 0% service outage, 0% message loss and duplicated messages. The whole migration process was fully transparent to Kafka applications.

To improve Amazon Alexa experiences and support machine learning inference at scale, we built an automated end-to-end solution for incremental model building or fine-tuning machine learning models through continuous learning, continual learning, and/or semi-supervised active learning. Customer privacy is our top concern at Alexa, and as we build solutions, we face unique challenges when operating at scale such as supporting multiple applications with tens of thousands of transactions per second with several dependencies including near-real time inference endpoints at low latencies. Apache Flink helps us transform and discover metrics in near-real time in our solution. In this talk, we will cover the challenges that we faced, how we scale the infrastructure to meet the needs of ML teams across Alexa, and go into how we enable specific use cases that use Apache Flink on Amazon Kinesis Data Analytics to improve Alexa experiences to delight our customers while preserving their privacy.
