Microsoft was founded in 1975 and initially produced programming languages like BASIC. Their big break came in 1980 when IBM contracted them to develop an operating system for the upcoming IBM PC. Microsoft purchased an operating system called Q-DOS for $50,000 and resold it to IBM for $186,000 under an agreement to license the product. This operating system became MS-DOS, which quickly became the standard for PCs. Microsoft faced competition from the CP/M-86 operating system but was able to maintain dominance by pricing their programming languages higher for CP/M-86 and aggressively discounting MS-DOS. They also gained experience with graphical user interfaces on the Macintosh that they later applied to Windows.
