Functions and role of Travel agencies
A travel agency is a business that sells travel
related products and services, particularly package
tours, to end-user customers on behalf of third
party travel suppliers, such as airlines, hotels, tour
companies, and cruise lines.
They help to find a vacation to go on and at the
cheapest price. It is centered on the
communication and processing of information. They
sell airline tickets, finding vacation trips for its
clients. travel agency sell airline tickets, cruises,
vacation packages, tours, travel insurance, etc
By becoming e business, the travel agency will
gain competitive advantages in areas like;
 reduction in agency commissions paid by airlines
and the increasing use of the Internet and other
online services to obtain travel information and
make airline reservations which cause cheaper fares
 faster and time saving booking
 access to services 24/7,
 booking of travel from the comfort of home
 full knowledge of the route for trip

Going into E business requires accurate planning of
sthe architecture for the business information
system. The system will include;
 operating system
 web based system developer
 database to be used
 Network

Operating system to be used
An operating system (OS) is an interface between
hardware and user which is responsible for the
management and coordination of activities and the
sharing of the resources of a computer that acts as
a host for computing applications run on the
machine. As a host, one of the purposes of an
operating system is to handle the detail of the
operation of the hardware .
A typical operating
System diagram
The operating system to use is Microsoft windows;
Microsoft Windows is a series of
software operating systems and graphical user
interfaces produced by Microsoft.
Microsoft Windows came to dominate the
world's personal computer market. As of October
2009, Windows had approximately 91% of the
market share of the client operating systems for
usage on the Internet
The most recent client version of Windows
is Windows 7; the most recent server version
is Windows Server 2008 R2.
Microsoft windows
Advantages; a. The largest library of programs and applications.
b. Some commercial software work only with Windows and DirectX.
c. Almost all hardware has drivers which are compatible with Windows.
d. Most widely used.
Disadvantages; a. Prone to viruses, spyware, and adware if proper steps not taken
such as installation of internet security software, which reduces performance
speed.
b. Requires regular maintenance to avoid system errors and reduced performance.
c. Purchasing a Windows license/install disk can be relatively expensive
 Visual Studio is a suite of applications
created by Microsoft to give developers a
compelling development environment for the
Windows and .NET platforms.
 Visual Studio can be used to write console
applications, Windows applications, Windows
services, Windows Mobile applications,
ASP.NET applications, and ASP.NET web
services, in your choice of C++, C#, VB.NET,
J#, and more.
 Visual Studio also includes various additional
development tools, such as Visual
SourceSafe; which tools are included
depends greatly on the edition of Visual
Studio that you are using.
 E.g can be used to create application forms
that will be used to fill in personal
information and other booking arrangements
such as hotel stay, car rental/hotel transport
Typical Microsoft visual studio
 Ms Excel is an easy program to use to make time lines
for customer’s flight arrangement
 Run sophisticated calculations to derive the
information you want..
 Generate reports on your data and view them in
multiple formats.
 Use forms to add, change, delete, and navigate the
current customers’ data easily.
 Create a Microsoft Word mail merge — for example, to
mass-produce address labels of your customers.
 Create Web pages to display your data as read-only
or to access it in an updatable format.
 Both programs organize data in columns, also
called fields, that store a particular kind of
information, or data type.
 E.g, you could create a list of your customer’s
personal data or employee personal data. Your list
might have five columns to organize employees' ID
numbers, first names, last names, telephone
numbers at work, and dates of hire. The cell row at
the very top of each column would contain text
labels to describe the data.
Database to be used
Database: these are designed to offer an organized mechanism for
storing, managing and retrieving information. Databases are very
similar to spread sheets.
The difference(s) between them are explained below;
 Retrieve all records that match certain criteria,
 Update records in bulk,
 Cross-reference records in different tables,
 Perform complex aggregate calculations
 The eBusiness database (eBDB) was created to support the needs to
the Consumer Portal / Web Self
 Service project. This database holds a subset of the data in the
source databases. It was designed to provide quick access of
needed data items to web applications. This database falls into the
interactive database class. It was designed specifically for the Web
Self Service Portal
Example of how a database is used;
RESORT HOTEL BOARD NIGHTS MONTH PRICE
 COSTA BLANCA

 BENIDORM BALI HALF BOARD 7 MAY 355
 BENIDORM MARINA FULL BOARD 14 MAY 579
 BENIDORM FLAMINGO SELF CATERING 7 JUNE 255
 BENIDORM TROPICANA FULL BOARD 14 JULY 719
 BENIDORM HELIOS HALF BOARD 28 APRIL 1129
 BENIDORM ALHAMBRA SELF CATERING 14 AUGUST 499

 IBIZA

 SAN ANTONIO HAWAII HALF BOARD 7 MAY 365
 SAN ANTONIO ARENAL FULL BOARD 14 JUNE 625
 PORTINAX MIAMI SELF CATERING 14 JULY 415
 PORTINAX AUGUSTA HALF BOARD 7 AUGUST 375
 SANTA EULALIA FIESTA HALF BOARD 28 MAY 1255
 Advantages of such a database are;
 You can save the database and print all the information.
 Correcting any information which was first misinterpretated can
easily be adjusted.
 Deleting any record is very easy, this happens when an entry is no
longer true example cancellation of any function like fiesta.
 Details of any new hotels can be added to an existing database.
 Names, amounts, any other data can be changed easily
A database
Network to be used
A computer network allows computers to
communicate with many other computers and to
share resources and information.
The network to be used are
 Intranet
 An intranet is a set of networks, using the Internet
Protocol and IP-based tools such as web browsers
and file transfer applications, that is under the
control of a single administrative entity. That
administrative entity closes the intranet to all but
specific, authorized users. The intranet is the
internal network of the business, to be used by the
business employees only.
 Extranet
 An extranet is a network or internetwork that is
limited in scope to a single organization or entity
and also has limited connections to the networks of
one or more other usually, but not necessarily,
trusted organizations or entities. To be used by the
stakeholders like suppliers and other stakeholders
even customers.
 The Internet is a global system of
interconnected computer networks that use the
standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve
billions of users worldwide. It is a network of
networks that consists of millions of private and
public, academic, business, and government
networks of local to global scope that are linked by
a broad array of electronic and optical networking
technologies.
Scope of reach
With the aid of business information system, the
scope and reach of this travel agency will transcend
countries and time zones, through the internet.
Customers can be acquired anywhere in the world
and it will bring great profit to the business.
