As COVID-19 begins to wind down, here is a picture of how the residents of Michigan have survived the pandemic, and who is available to help reopen the State.

Purpose:
On a daily basis, the State of Michigan provides information to the public on the number of COVID-19 related cases and deaths in each county and
statewide. It also provides a demographic breakdown of the distribution of COVID-19 patients and deceased by gender, age, and race.
However, there is little information on COVID-19 in regards to the pandemic survival rate of the general population nor survival rates of COVID-19 patients
in any of the categories mentioned above. This analysis uses State data to provide a picture of the population’s survival as the pandemic winds down.

Final Comments:
• COVID-19 is serious and all precautions such as social distancing, wearing a mask, and other recommendations from the healthcare community is highly advised.
• For perspective, let’s assume the average age of Michigan residents listed in the “80 +” category on their COVID-19 data webpage is 85 years of age. Statewide,
the percentage of the “80 +” population who have died from COVID-19 is 0.374%. The Social Security Administration’s Period Life tables estimate the probability
of a person 85 years of age passing away for any reason in a typical year is 9.875%.
• My motivation for performing this analysis comes from the shock our family had when my 75 year old uncle contracted the virus. He came down with COVID-19
in late March after entering a hospital as a result of a fall he had at home. He is a diabetic who was unaware of an infection in his foot until the EMT’s were
treating him for his fall. The hospital considered amputation, but first began treating the infection with large doses of antibiotics. My uncle had a stroke when
he was 58 which has left him paralyzed on one side. In addition, he suffers from high blood pressure and heart disease. Our initial report on my uncle from his
nurse was that he had pneumonia, fluid was being drained from his legs due to congestive heart failure, and that he was receiving 10 liters of oxygen. Things
looked grim. I wondered about his probability of survival, but could not find any information. That’s when I began putting together an analysis to get a better
idea of his chances. Thankfully, he pulled through. My condolences to all of the families who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
