The document discusses how galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) can support Wikipedians by providing images and information from their collections. It notes that GLAM institutions often restrict photography and require lengthy permission processes, creating barriers for Wikipedians. The document proposes solutions like GLAM uploading high-quality images under free licenses, communicating directly with Wikipedians, and designating staff as open knowledge experts.

Wikipedians have the same demand as scientists: Full and free access to scientific
resources.
Digital resources could democratise knowledge but in many cases, they make matters
worse: They are only accessible with a paid account.
Many libraries and archives are already
aware of the problems.
Become open. Become free. Become
digital.

Conditions of musuems/galleries:
- No photography allowed
- Permission needed which must be
requested weeks before
- Every single artifact needs its own
permission
Infrastructural problems:
- Mirroring in glass cabinets
- Bad light conditions
- Only one perspective possible
- No tripods or other equipement
allowed
Copyright violation:
- If there are copyrights the rightsholder
must accept the upload and the license
Problems with licensing :
- No commercial use or only with
restrictions
- Reuse is not allowed. „Only for
Wikipedia“

Museums and galleries often forbid
photography.
Museums and galleries often are
restrictive: No tripod allowed.
Museums and galleries often ask for a
permission which must be requested
weeks before.
Museums and galleries often forbid the
free commercial use of the pictures or
they request a charge.
Wikipedians work without charge.
Wikipedians bear the cost of their
equipement.
Wikipedians work often semi-professional.
Wikipedians make off-the-job training in
photography. Ex. Workshops.
Wikipedians contribute their pictures on a
free license and free of costs.
14. How GLAM can support Wikipedians. A contribution to OKCon 2013 by Micha L. Rieser
Reasons?
We want sell postcards and books
featuring our artifacts.
It is our property and that‘s why we
want supervise it.
Nobody steals your property.Do you really need that financial
source?
We don‘t have the copyrights and that’s why
we cannot decide.
There are no copyrights on most of the relevant
artifacts.
Flash light does annoy people. This is a question of safety and
security.
With tripods there is no need for flash
lights.
This is only a question how to
organise it.
15. How GLAM can support Wikipedians. A contribution to OKCon 2013 by Micha L. Rieser
Best Case
Because:
GLAM bring their own content
to Wikmedia Commons.
They take pictures of the artifacts with
good equipment under good lighting
conditions and from different perspectives.
They upload them on Wikimedia Commons
and set them under a free license.
They communicate with the community or
are part of the community themselves.
No semi-professional
photographer on a voluntary
basis needed.
16. How GLAM can support Wikipedians. A contribution to OKCon 2013 by Micha L. Rieser
Ideal Case
• GLAM know about the barriers in their
organisations.
• GLAM are sensitive to the needs of open
knowledge (different projects, free licenses,
copyright issues, etc.)
• Each GLAM has at least one employee who is
an expert and a contact person for open
knowledge related concerns.
