The MIU Men's Health Foundation seeks to raise awareness about men's health issues like prostate cancer through events like the Run for the Ribbon 5K and the Men's Health Event. The Foundation has found that many men do not see doctors regularly or talk to them about screening, despite family histories of diseases. Their events provide free health screenings and education to thousands of men in Detroit. The Foundation has also provided grants for research and support services for prostate cancer patients.

WHY YOU SHOULD “FIGHT LIKE A MAN” FOR MEN’S HEALTH
For far too long, men’s health concerns were ignored, and overall, the medical community
has failed to educate men in the role of disease prevention, healthful lifestyles and proper
health maintenance.
From the MIU Men’s Health Foundation’s Men’s Health Event, we know 1 in 10 attendees
have not seen a physician in more than five years, though many admit to unhealthy habits
and more than 60 percent have waist sizes exceeding healthy standards. Slightly more than 1
in 4 attendees reported a history of prostate cancer in their families, but more than half have
never talked to a medical professional about screening or prevention.
Prostate Cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer found in American men,
affecting 1 in 6, and is the second leading cause of death, according to the American Cancer
Society. It is estimated that more than 2 million men are prostate cancer survivors, either
diagnosed and treated or living with the disease. With advances in technology, awareness
and treatment, the number of fathers, sons and brothers can continue to increase.
The MIU Men’s Health Foundation seeks to inspire a new mentality to “Fight Like a Man” for
men’s health to inspire a lifelong dedication to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and increase
prostate cancer survivorship.
WHAT IS THE MIU MEN’S HEALTH FOUNDATION?
The MIU Men’s Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization launched by the
doctors of the Michigan Institute of Urology — Michigan’s largest subspecialty urology
practice—dedicated to promoting the awareness education, research and treatment of
prostate cancer and men’s health-related issues.
Since the formation of the mission in 2009, the MIU Men’s Health Foundation has become a
leader in men’s health advocacy locally and nationally. The Foundation’s local work collecting
data about men’s health has attracted national attention to propel investment in healthcare
strategies for men across the country.
The MIU Men’s Health Foundation is dedicated to supporting men’s survivorship, embracing
their dedication to choosing to know about their health and their choice to “Fight Like a Man”
to protect it.
To achieve these goals, The MIU Men’s Health Foundation introduced Fight Like a Man
International and its signature events, The Run for the Ribbon and The Men’s Health event,
among other initiatives.

Run for the Ribbon
The Run for the Ribbon is a 5k Run/Walk taking place each Father’s Day at the Detroit Zoo. The event
helps raise crucial funds dedicated to promoting the awareness, education, research and treatment
of prostate cancer and men’s health related issues.
The Run for the Ribbon is about survivorship, supporting men with education and research for
treatment to continue growing the number of people who can call themselves survivors. The event
honors men and their families for their commitment to choose to know about their health, “Fight Like
a Man” for it and win.
The MIU Men’s Health Foundation has been recognized by Michigan State Representative Jim
Townsend for its continued work in the field of men’s health advocacy and in honor of the annual Run
for the Ribbon, endorsed by the Michigan Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports
as a quality physical activity event significantly contributing to the health and well-being of Michigan
residents and included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series program.
The Men’s Health Event
The Men’s Health Event takes place in the fall each year at Detroit’s Ford Field.
The event provides men a better understanding of how to stay healthy, screen them for some of the
most treatable diseases and assess their current health, provide a health education and increase
awareness about advances in health care. Through the support of partners and collaborators, the
Men’s Health Event is the largest free event of its kind in the United States and is inspiring organizations
across the country to replicate its success.
Men ages 18 and older, regardless of health insurance coverage, have access to a variety of free
screenings, educational seminars and on-site medical professionals. Screenings have included
standard vital measurements; blood tests for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), testosterone, glucose
and cholesterol; BMI and body fat percentage assessments; mental health screenings; and vision,
hearing and dental examinations.
