- The mHealth field has emerged as a sub-segment of eHealth, the use of information and communication technology( ICT), such as computers, mobile phones,tablets e.t.c mHealth applications include the use of mobile devices in collecting community and clinical health data, delivery of healthcare information to practitioners, researchers, and patients, real-time monitoring of patients, and direct provision of care
- The use of mobile technology has exploded globally. Soon, wireless networks will cover 90% of the world's population, providing the opportunity to deliver healthcare like never before. Mobiles provide a scalable affordable platform to bring in healthcare service
- These applications span a wide range of activities: data collection, disease surveillance, health promotion, diagnostic support, disaster response, and remote monitoring.
- in the developed world, ageing populations and rising rates of chronic disease are burdening overstretched health systems, coinciding with a desire from patients to take "a more active role in their health." Mobile is particularly good at monitoring patients, giving them scope to independently manage their health, and allowing for more efficient handling of patient data
- Surprisingly, the UN reports there are now more people with mobile phones (six billion for world population of seven billion) on earth than there are with access to clean toilets (4.5 billion). Much of the innovative work in mobile health has emerged in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The innovation in these places is a result of multiple factors, including targeted private and public funding, flourishing mobile markets, and significant health gaps
- A different situation exists in the developing world, where a shortage of health services is a major issue. By making medical services more portable and accessible, mobile technology could play an important role in bringing healthcare to remote, underserviced areas.
- Much of the innovative work in mobile health has emerged in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The innovation in these places is a result of multiple factors, including targeted private and public funding, flourishing mobile markets, and significant health gaps
- Various reasons have contributed to many failed mHealth solutions :- lack of funding, lack of enough market research, UI issues, unscalable solutions e.t.c e.t.c
- To date, Medic Mobile has affected one million people's lives in Malawi, where the majority of people live off of less than $2 a day.It was not started by software developers or doctors, it was started by a bunch of passionate students at Stanford who were interested in making a difference for the remotest and poorest using technology.
