Innovation

Wood materials have been started to be
considered as materials to make buildings with
seismic strength.

For this purpose, a 7 storey wooden building
was tested in Japan against earthquake, in
2007 by Italian Professor Ario Ceccotti,
University of Venice, Civil Engineering
Department.

There are similar researches made in USA by
National Science Foundation, under the name Prof. Ario Ceccotti
of NEESWood Project.

Nanotechnology in civil engineering

Nanotechnology can improve many building materials. Concrete can be made stronger and more durable using nano-silica particles that improve packing and reduce water penetration. Glass can be made self-cleaning using titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Carbon nanotubes give steel 5 times the strength but only 1/6 the density when added to concrete. Nanoparticles in paints can make them more insulating and corrosion-resistant. While nanotechnology offers improvements, the main limitations are currently the high costs and potential environmental effects.

BEHAVIOR OF REACTIVE POWDER CONCRETE SLABS EXPOSED TO FIRE FLAME

This work is devoted to study the behavior as well as the mechanical properties of reactive powder concrete (RPC) slabs subjected to fire flame. The experimental program includes investigation the effect of burning temperature and duration on some important mechanical properties of RPC compared with normal strength concrete (NSC) such as compressive strength, modulus of rupture, splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. Additional tests are also conducted to study the effect of temperature, duration, existence of steel reinforcement and slab thickness on the flexural or punching shear behavior of simply supported RPC slabs having dimensions of (520×520×50mm) under concentrated load at the center of the slab. The test results showed that the performance of RPC specimens at fire were worse than that of conventional concrete due to increased spalling. All RPC samples were spalled and loss their mechanical properties under burning at (600ºC) for (60 mins.) duration. Slab thickness of (50 mm) was enough to resist fire exposure at high temperature level without spalling of the upper surface of concrete

RPC is an ultra-high strength concrete containing cement, silica fume, sand, quartz powder and steel fibers. The study developed RPC mixes with compressive strengths up to 150 MPa. It tested the effects of water-binder ratio, silica fume content, quartz powder addition, and high-temperature curing on compressive strength. The highest strength of 146 MPa was achieved. It was found that lower water-binder ratio, higher silica fume content, addition of quartz powder, and high-temperature curing increased compressive strength by up to 10%.

It will may or may not increase the structure cost because if we use FRP in a structure then we can avoid the problem that we face in a structure caused due to corrosion which reduce strength of the structure, foundation loosing plaster from the surface of the reinforced section due to expansion caused due to rusting as well as in building envelopes. The objectives of this seminar report are to study about FRP Manufacturing and its properties, study about the various applications of FRP, design and analyze a FRP member, Finite element analysis of a simple beam using FRP as a reinforcement, role of FRP in the sustainable world, to find out the cost benefit of the elements used in a corrosive environment structure which can be replaced by the FRP. This study will cover all the forms of FRP that can be used in a building and give a brief about FRP rebars its properties, design, analysis, uses and the effect on cost of a build during construction as well as the cost analysis of the structure. This study will give an idea on the advantage of FRP over steel when we are using FRP in a corrosive environment like coast line and it will give an initial idea to the designer about the advantage and disadvantage of FRP over steel. In the final part of this seminar report analysis results are used to give a base that FRP can sustain in structure as FRP reinforced bar and an example of a LCC is also used to give a satisfactory conclusion and on the final page the summery of the seminar is present.

RPC exhibits high flexural strength, very low water absorption and permeability, and excellent resistance to chloride ion penetration, making it suitable for demanding applications like nuclear waste containment. However, RPC is more expensive than high-performance concrete.

Presentation of the preliminary results from EU Project CELLUWOOD at the International Trade Fair HABITAT (Spain, 11th-14th February 2014). Coordinator and responsible of the project: Miguel Ángel Abián The EU Project CELLUWOOD is co-funded by the CIP Eco-innovation First Application and Market Replication Projects Initiative. Through the Eco-innovation funding scheme, the EU wants to support innovative products, services and technologies that can make a better use of our natural resources and reduce Europe’s ecological footprint. The project has developed non-petrochemical adhesives (bio-resins) for improving the mechanical strength of laminated timber, so it can be used in large structures for buildings. This will encourage the use of renewable materials and avoid the use of adhesives petrochemicals. Furthermore, these bio-resins are being used to repair the wood defects such as cracks and knots, which improves the material utilization. This project is co-funded by IVACE (Instituto Valenciano de Competitividad Empresarial) and by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

This document summarizes a study on producing lightweight concrete by partially replacing cement with wood ash and adding expanded polystyrene beads and coconut fibers. The main goal is to determine the workability, compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength of the lightweight concrete. Different mixtures will be tested with varying replacements of wood ash and additions of beads and fibers. Based on previous research, the strengths of the wood ash, bead, and fiber concrete will be compared to conventional concrete. Testing will include compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength tests. Preliminary results found that workability was acceptable after adding beads and fibers. CELLUWOOD Project Presentation Outcomes CELLUWOOD was a 4 years EU project, funded under the Eco Innovation research initiative. The project aims to develop a new range of structural elements made of wood by introducing innovative production elements and includes the use of cellulose instead of petroleum-based glue in the lamination of the timber products. The ‘physical’ results will be the strong eco-beams and columns and their most sustainable manufacturing technologies, in addition to significant environmental and cost benefits of the innovation. These are achieved by the introduction of the (new) technologies from other sectors (e.g. cellulose velvet, biocomposite reinforcement and bio-resin) for innovative uses in the defect removal and repairing, facilitating innovation in the use of nano/micro cellulose and bio-resin technologies in timber reengineering, and the development, testing and demonstration of the novel initiative products. Bamboo is a sustainable building material that can be used to lower construction costs for hotels and resorts. It grows quickly, is strong yet lightweight, and sequesters carbon from the atmosphere. Bamboo has inherent properties making it suitable for construction, such as high tensile strength, flexibility, and light weight. Using bamboo can reduce material costs by 65-70% compared to other materials like brick. Bamboo has compressive strength similar to concrete and tensile strength similar to steel. Construction using bamboo is also beneficial as it is affordable, environmentally friendly, and accessible even to low-income areas.

Then we have compared the values of these composites. Water absorption test and flame test of coir composite, Bamboo composite has been carried out, so as to find out the mechanical and physical properties of composite materials. Finally, Bending test and Analysis of sandwich composite panels has been carried out for bamboo-EPS sandwich panel and Bison-EPS sandwich panel to understand the characteristics of sandwich composite panels.
