Metrics-driven engineering is practiced at Etsy. [1] Engineers build applications and also manage monitoring tools like Graphite and Ganglia to track metrics and visualize logs and events. [2] Over 16,000 metrics are tracked in Graphite along with logs to provide visibility into application health and correlate it with deployments and other events. [3] Dashboards are used to mix and match metrics and provide a high-level view of site performance and validation.
Details on how we capture application data in our access and error logs, as well as how to generate quick reports and graphs from these logs.

After years of promoting PHPUnit I still hear it's hard to get started with unit testing. So instead of showing nice step-by-step examples on how to use PHPUnit, we're going to take an example straight from github. So I've taken the challenge to start writing tests for PHP projects that don't have unit tests in place and explain how I decide where to begin, how I approach my test strategy and how I ensure I’m covering each possible use-case (and covering the CRAP index). The goal of this presentation is to show everyone that even legacy code, spaghetti code and complex code bases can be tested. After this talk you can immediately apply my examples on your own codebase (even if it's a clean code base) and get started with testing. To follow along a basic knowledge unit testing with PHPUnit is required.
Visual Component Testing -- w/ Gil Tayar (Applitools) and Gleb Bahmutov (Cyp...Applitools
Full Webinar recording:
Functional and visual testing work very well together for end-to-end frontend tests.
In this hands-on session, Gleb Bahmutov (VP Engineering @ Cypress) and Gil Tayar (Sr. Architect @ Applitools) showed how to apply the same approach to the individual components -- the building blocks of modern web apps.
Component testing ensures a thorough validation of all our components' variants such as different inputs and states, edge-case network responses, and responsive widths.
Gleb and Gil used Cypress to drive the tests and check them functionally, while integrating the Applitools plugin to provide us with the capability to quickly and easily test them visually across all browsers and response widths.
Watch this on-demand webinar to see the full power of the functional and visual component tests ability to speed up the development cycle.

Develop and Deploy your JavaEE micro service in less than 5 minutes with Apac...Alex Soto
Do you know that Java EE is not heavy anymore? Do you know that in Java EE with two simple annotations you can create a REST endpoint that it is secured, transaction-aware and with concurrent control? And even more important, the era of heavy application servers is over. Apache TomEE has fixed this.
Come to this session to learn how you can develop a micro service and deploy it with only 5 minutes.
This is the Google Tech Talk that I gave August 17th, 2007 on building a JavaScript library. I derived much of the talk from my experiences in building the jQuery and FUEL JavaScript libraries.
In this talk we will make a tour through the most important changes and new features in the language and its standard library, such as enums, single-dispatch generic functions, Tulip, yield from, raise from None, contextlib... And yes, we will talk about Python 3.

The Screenplay Pattern: Better Interactions for Better AutomationApplitools
Automating interactions for tests is hard. For the past decade, the primary way to automate web UI interactions has been the Page Object Model. Unfortunately, page objects do not scale well because, by design, they allow lots of code duplication and unsafe activity. The Screenplay Pattern is a much better pattern for handling interactions. In Screenplay, Actors use Abilities to perform Interactions. Join Lead Software Engineer in Test, Andrew Knight, as he introduces the Screenplay Pattern using a .NET implementation named Boa Constrictor. Learn how to use Screenplay calls with Boa Constrictor to write a simple search engine test in C#. By the end of this talk, you’ll be empowered to make better interactions for better automation!

At LinkedIn, we have started to use the Play Framework to build front-end and back-end services at massive scale. Play does things a little differently: it's a Java and Scala web framework, but it doesn't follow the servlet spec; it's fairly new, but it runs on top of robust technologies like Akka and Netty; it uses a thread pool, but it's built for non-blocking I/O and reactive programming; most importantly, it's high performance, but also high productivity. We've found that the Play Framework is one of the few frameworks that is able to maintain the delicate balance of performance, reliability, and developer productivity. In the Java and Scala world, nothing even comes close. In this talk, I'll share what we've learned so far, including details of rapid iteration with Java and Scala, the story behind async I/O on the JVM, support for real time web apps (comet, WebSockets), and integrating Play into a large existing codebase.

It's no secret that at Etsy we are big fans of small, incremental and frequent changes and tight feedback loops. This is how we make it possible to deploy changes to our main codebase more than 50 times a day and also safely apply changes to our infrastructure in a continuous fashion. It enables us to rapidly fix bugs and roll out features in our application stack and infrastructure. This however would not be possible without a tight feedback loop and a myriad of monitoring tools that keep us informed about changes and possible problems in every nook and cranny of the Etsy stack, no matter if it's a network change event, systems or application level performance or how bad the last week of on-call rotation was.
The practical implementation of Continuous Delivery at Etsy, and how it enables the engineering team to build features quickly, refactor and change architecture, and respond to problems in production.

Monitoring Complex Systems: Keeping Your Head on Straight in a Hard WorldBrian Troutwine
This talk will provide motivation for the extensive instrumentation of complex computer systems and make the argument that such systems. This talk will provide practical starting points in Erlang projects and maintain a perspective on the human organization around the computer system. Brian will focus on getting started with instrumentation in a systematic way and follow up with the challenge of interpreting and acting on metrics emitted from a production system in a way which does not overwhelm operators’ ability to effectively control or prioritize faults in the system. He’ll use historical examples and case studies from my work to keep the talk anchored in the practical.
Talk objectives:
Brian hopes to convince the audience of two things:
* that monitoring and instrumentation is an essential component of any long-lived system and
* that it's not so hard to get started, after all.
He’ll keep a clear-eyed view of what works and is difficult in practice so that the audience can make a reasoned decision after the talk.
Target audience:
This talk would appeal to engineers with long-running production employments, operations folks and Erlangers in general.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
