2. Introduction
• In its short life, social media has revolutionised almost everything we
do. The way we share information, the way we interact and connect
with one another, the way thoughts are expressed and problems are
debated – these are just a few of the changes that social media has
brought about in our lives. The possibilities are endless.
• To mark Social Media Day today, here’s our list of 5 things that broke
the internet!
3. 1. The #MeToo Movement
• The #MeToo movement is an
international movement against
sexual harassment and assault. It’s a
worldwide phenomenon, searched
for on Google in 196 countries in the
past year. The movement gained
attention after allegations of sexual
assault and harassment by
Hollywood producer Harvey
Weinstein were made. But it now
stands for giving people a voice, the
start of a larger conversation, and
community healing.
4. • In India, actors like Kangana Ranaut, Swara Bhasker and Priyanka
Chopra are at the helm of the Indian feminist movement. A lot of
Indians have identified with the #MeToo movement but it’s yet to
make such a huge impact as it did in the U.S.
5. 2. Priya Prakash Varrier
• Priya Prakash Varrier became an overnight internet sensation with
her winking and expressive facial expressions in a song from the
Malayalam film 'Oru Adaar Love'. Portraying a high school student
flirting with a student from her class, Varrier’s Instagram following
spiked exponentially after her 'wink' went viral.
6. 3. Dancing Uncle
• Sanjeev Shrivastava, an electronics professor, wouldn’t have imagined
that his dance moves would break the internet! Known
as #DancingUncle on the web, a video of Shrivastava and his wife
dancing to Govinda’s 'Aapke Aa Jane Se' at a wedding went viral on
Twitter. Even Govinda himself approved of the dance moves. After
breaking the internet, Shrivastava was appointed as the brand
ambassador for Vidisha Municipal Corporation, his hometown.
7. 4. Padmaavat
• We know of the huge political (Karni Sena) and community backlash
against the release of Padmaavat. But, once the film was released, the
Twitterati didn’t hold themselves back! What can you expect after the
fiasco made over the film?
8. 5. The Anant Ambani Speech
• At a celebration to mark 40 years
of Reliance, Mukesh Ambani’s
son Anant Ambani gave the
audience a rousing speech. For
social media netizens, the main
takeaway was the way he gave
his speech which was used in
every meme and joke possible.
9. • While campaigns like the #MeToo movement question problematic
behaviours and patterns throughout the world, many internet
sensations and things that happen on the World Wide Web are just
plain hilarious and can make you LOL anywhere and at any time (thank
you, memes!). We’re excited about what the internet has in store for us
before the next Social Media Day. Aren’t you?
