Back in 2016, I deployed an ASP.NET monolith app to IIS on Windows. It worked but it was clunky in every sense of the word. Over the years, the app was freed from Windows (thanks to .NET Core), containerized to run consistently in different environments (thanks to Docker) and decomposed into a set of loosely-coupled, event-driven, microservices (thanks to Cloud Run). The end result is a simpler and portable serverless architecture that's much cheaper to run and maintain. In this talk, we'll go through the modernization journey, explore the decision points and deep dive into the final architecture and code.

Some of us remember working with n-tiers and stored procedures; some of us are still using them. But the role of a systems architect is still one of the most misunderstood things about the software development process. What does an architect actually do? If you’re working with a systems architect, what can you expect from them? And if you are a systems architect, what is your team expecting from you? In this talk we will cover what are the best applications for Azure Functions, where they fit amongst the many options in cloud computing and go over specific use cases, including building a completely serverless backend for a web application and how it can be used for home automation.

The microservice architectural style is an approach to developing a single application as a suite of small services, each running in its own process and communicating with lightweight mechanisms, often an HTTP resource API. In this slide we have discussed, Monolithic application vs Microservices, applicable scenarios for adopting the architectural pattern, when we need microservices, what are the benefits, case study of an e-commerce platform by compartmentalizing the scopes into different sample microservices and Docker implementations. Most services can be orchestrated with the control loops supplied by Kubernetes (deployments, stateful sets or jobs). Some stateful services in Workday require more advanced orchestration, and re-architecting them is not an easy option. In this talk you will discover why some of our services require extra orchestration, and how we evolved an existing service into a control loop on top of Kubernetes. The control loop organises multiple services into groups these are dynamically created, deleted and scaled. It also orchestrates blue/green deployments of each group. Now we can adopt more kubernetes features and retire some of our old scheduling code. Finally you will learn the process we follow to evaluate and design our own control loops and when you might find them useful. Bio Iain is a principal software engineer at Workday using Kubernetes and Scala to deliver their next generation elastic grid. His twin passions are large scale distributed computing and applying clean code to complex problems. He is interested in good design and how this can improve system reliability and reduce friction during development. He loves sharing his experiences as he learns and builds new systems. Containers offer several advantages over VMs, including faster provisioning, greater density, near bare-metal performance, and more flexibility. Golub outlines how Docker addresses earlier issues with containers by making them lightweight, standardized, interoperable and easy to automate across environments. This allows applications to be packaged and run consistently regardless of infrastructure. Golub believes containers allow for a better separation of application management from infrastructure management compared to VMs.

This talk will reveal four destructive communication patterns that can undermine team spirit, reduce productivity and cause conflict, and offer effective strategies for neutralizing them. Let's start with exciting storytelling about a fictional team of developers working on Scrum. You will learn about situations that their team member noticed during team meetings. Next, we will analyze "The Gottman Four Horsemen" model, which describes the four "horsemen of the apocalypse" of work relationships: criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling. For each of these patterns, specific "antidotes" will be offered that allow you to build healthier and more productive relationships in the team.
