Antonio, a Venetian merchant, complains to his friends of a melancholy that he cannot explain. His friend Bassanio is desperately in need of money to court Portia, a wealthy heiress who lives in the city of Belmont. Bassanio asks Antonio for a loan in order to travel in style to Portia’s estate. Antonio agrees, but is unable to make the loan himself because his own money is all invested in a number of trade ships that are still at sea. Antonio suggests that Bassanio secure the loan from one of the city’s moneylenders and name Antonio as the loan’s guarantor. In Belmont, Portia expresses sadness over the terms of her father’s will, which stipulates that she must marry the man who correctly chooses one of three caskets. None of Portia’s current suitors are to her liking, and she and her lady-in-waiting, Nerissa, fondly remember a visit paid some time before by Bassanio.

Act 1, scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice introduces us to th.docxMARK547399
Act 1, scene 1 of
The Merchant of Venice
introduces us to the main male characters in the play (except for Shylock whom we'll meet in scene 3). Antonio is the merchant of the play's title (Shylock is not a merchant, he is a money lender, but many think the play's title refers to him, it doesn't). He talks a lot about being "sad" and his friends also discuss his state of mind. The word "sad" in Shakespeare's English has a somewhat different meaning than it does for us. Someone who is sad in the 16th century is usually serious or sober and possibly depressed, but not sad as in grieving for someone or something. I think if you imagine Antonio as feeling depressed rather than sad, you'll have a better sense of his state of mind. No one seems to know why Antonio is depressed, including Antonio himself, and this is one of the mysteries of the play that never gets fully explained. One thing is clear though, he has lots of friends and they all want to cheer him up. Gratiano, the joker in the bunch, gets him to cheer up briefly, but the only person Antonio seems truly happy to see is his friend Bassanio, clearly the person in the world whom Antonio is most fond of (Antonio has no wife or children).
Antonio is a merchant and he makes his living by sending out ships to gather goods from the New World and Asia and India (silks and spices are the cargo mentioned in the scene). Then he sells those goods in Venice possibly to individuals and shop owners. Venice was a large city and a trading hub in the 1500s (the play was written in 1594). The big risk in Antonio's line of work is that the ships which bring his goods to Venice might sink somewhere out in the ocean. But he tells his friends Salerio and Solanio that he's not worried about his finances because he has more than one ship going to different destinations and also enough savings to survive some losses (see lines 41-45).
Bassanio is a gentleman not a merchant. This means he comes from a noble family and thus doesn't work for a living. But though he can claim a nobleman's status, he doesn't have much money, probably just a rather small income from a family estate. Yet he likes to live as though he does have a lot of money and as a result has to borrow money from his friends, particularly Antonio, in order to keep up his gentleman's lifestyle. But now he is worried about how much money he owes to Antonio (see lines 122-134). Bassanio has a plan to repay Antonio. He proposes his plan to Antonio in lines 140-152 where he uses a complicated metaphor about finding a lost arrow by shooting a second one in the same direction ("In my schooldays, when I had lost one shaft"). He describes his actual plan in lines 161-176 in the speech beginning "In Belmont is a lady richly left." Antonio replies that he will help Bassanio in any way that he can though he doesn't have much cash on hand at the moment.
In the text box below, please answer the followig questions:
1. Explain what Bassanio's plan is.

Othello Questions
ACT I
1. While Shakespeare presents the world of Venice as a place of civilization, is slow turns into a place of un civilization and disputes. For example, Roderigo and Iago wake up Brabantio and tell him that there are thieves in his house. In reply, Brabantio says This is Venice. My house is not a grange. This shows how Venice is not usually a place with interrupting events. . Shakespeare also shows how Venice is slowing becoming corrupt. This is demonstrated when Desdemona elopes with Othello. Brabantio orders a search to get Othello. When Othello tells the Duke Brabantio accusation are false another search is put in place for Desdemona for questioning. Desdemona tells her dad that she is married to the Moor,...show more content...Desdemona has no family anymore and now she is going to travel with Othello to a place of warfare. At this point in the play Desdemona is very vulnerable.
6. Othello s and Desdemona s understanding of their love and relationship are not equivalent to one another. Othello believes their love was founded upon his valiancy and torturous past. Desdemona feels that she fell for his sincerity and strength, thus intriguing her and gaining her love. When Othello must explain his love for Desdemona in the presence of her father and the Venetian council he explains he wooed her through his chivalrous stories and he loved her for her sympathy and aww, not because of qualities she possessed. He explained My story being done, she gave me for my pains a world of sighs... she thanked me and bade me, if I had a friend that loved her, I should but teach him how to tell my story, and that would woo her. Upon this hint I spake. She

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Antonio plays the pivotal role in the play , ’The Mercant Of
Venice ”. He is a wealthy mercant who owns a number of
ships carrying merchandise to the four corners of the
world . He is a hounarable man. His kindness and
generosity endear him to all and he spends most
generously on his friends .
Antonio is a philanthropist who lends money without
intrest and even tries to save people from the clutches of
shylock , the money lender. Although antonio is a
thorough gentalman ,he is not free from prejudice against
shylock , the jew who lends money on intreast . He dislikes
shylock and shows it by spitting on him and calling him a
dog . Thus , this shakespearean character ,though noble
,has some human weaknesses.
6.
7. BASSANIO
Bassanio is a young handsome man and dearest friend of
antonio. He is habitual to an extravagant and grnd lifestyle for
which he frequently remains in debt.
Bassanio’slove for portia though appears to be mercenary in
the begnning ,develops into true love later in the play .His
nobilty and charecter is evident in the correct choice of the
casket. He proves to be a affectionate husband in the end.
Bassanio is of a happy nature which is in sharp contrast to his
friend antonio’s melancholic nature.he is a carefree man who
loves to enjoy the pleasures of life. He has nothing heroic in
him but he is definitley quite charming.
8.
9. SHYLOCK
Shylock is a complex and a dynamic charecter, who aroueses
contrasting emotions of hatred and admiration. He is a devout
and proud jew, who is called a dog and other demeaning
names by antonio . shylock is a greedy and misrable man

golden opportunity to take revenge on him when antonio takes
a loan of three thousand ducats for his friend , bassanio.

in the trail scene are both astonished and disgusting . He is
impulsive but good at heart.
Gratiano accompanies bassanio to belmont where he falls in love
with portia’s lady in waiting ,nerissa. He follows bassano’s
example and gives away his ring to nerissa . In the end he is
confronted by her , he admits his mistake and promise never to
part with a ring.
11. LORENZO
Lorenzo is the friend of antonio and bassanio. He woos shylock

little in a solution. Lorenzo though not attacted by jessica
money ,spends it irresponsibly with her and wastes it .lorenzo
is trustworthy and therefore ,portia puts in his care the
management of her house .
Lorenzo is poetic in nature ,speaking two of the most beautiful
passages in the play. He utters line celebrating the inner musical
harmony of the universe and elernal values of romantic love .he
expresses his anti jewish prejudice in his speech later ,by
eloping with a jewish girl without her fathers knowledge.
