Section 4205 of the new health care reform legislation requires chain restaurants and retail food establishments with 20 or more locations to provide calorie information on menus and menu boards and make additional nutrition information available upon request. It aims to give consumers greater access to nutrition facts when eating away from home. The requirements will apply to standard menu items and pre-packaged foods available for self-service. The FDA must propose regulations within a year and will address issues like standardizing recipes and reasonable variations. The provisions preempt non-identical state and local labeling laws.
