INTRODUCTION
• Countertransference refers to a
specific emotional response by the
nurse towards the patient that is
inappropriate to the content and
context of the therapeutic
relationship or inappropriate in its
emotional intensity.
• It refers to the nurse’s specific
emotional response
generated by the qualities of
the patient.

TYPES OF COUNTER TRANSFERENCE
1. REACTION OF INTENSE LOVE OR CARING
2. REACTION OF INTENSE HOSTILITY OR HATRED:-
✓ hostility :- very strong feelings against
somebody/something.
✓ hatred :- a very strong feeling of not liking
somebody/something; hate.
3.REACTION OF INTENSE ANXIETY:-
✓A reaction of intense anxiety refers to an acute
emotional response characterized by extreme fear,
nervousness, or worry.
Forms of counter transference
displayed by the nurse:
➤Inability to empathize with the patient in certain problem areas.
➤ Depressed feelings during or after the session.
➤ Carelessness about implementing the contact by being late.
➤ Drowsiness during the session.
➤ Feelings of anger or impatience.
➤ personal or social relationship with patient.
➤Feeling angry or impatient because of patient unwillingness to
change
➤Dreaming about or pre occupation with the patient.
➤ Encouragement of patient’s dependency.
• Management:
➤ Experience of working with psychiatric patient.
➤ Constantly look out for counter transference.
➤ Hold counter transference in abeyance or utilize it for
promoting therapeutic goals.
➤ Apply self examination through out the course of
relationship.
➤Pursue to find out the source of problem.
➤ Exercise control over counter transference.
➤Have individual or group supervision.
➤ Weekly clinical seminars, peer consultation, professional
meetings can also offer emotional support.
