To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter on behalf of Sarah Menard, whomI have known since
October2014. Sarah workedas a Conversation Partner and Classroom Tutor at the
American English Institute. I was her supervisor for 6 months as an Interim Program
Coordinator.
In this role, Sarah took every opportunity to workwith our students (international
students taking classes to improve their English in preparation foruniversity study) in as
many ways as possible. She worked individually withthree students as a conversation
partner. She also worked as a classroom tutor. The instructors gave her positive reviews for
her workin the classroom. The students seemed to enjoy workingwith her, and she was
very enthusiastic about workingwith them.
Sarah also volunteered to work with our students in the new ‘student success’
courses we developed. Workingthese courses ofteninvolved some chaos and uncertainty
because there was a complex combination of teacher-led and tutor-led activity in different
locations. Tutors who tookon these roles needed to be flexible, have a high tolerance for
ambiguity, and be good communicators, both with the students and with the program
coordinator and instructors. Sara was very responsible in this regard and never seemed to
get toonervous in the faceof a little confusion—Ibelieve her ability to respond with
leadership skill and adaptability would be easily applied to other workor study situations.
Finally, Sarah also took on ‘help desk’ hours, in whichshe helped walk-ins with
whatever they brought her way—homework,testpreparation, listening practice, interviews
for class projects. Sarah was very alert and energetic during these sessions, and was very
culturally appropriate and welcoming with international students.
I would recommend Sarah for any workor academic venture or position that
involvedinternational, intercultural, and/or academic interactions withpeers. She is an
interpersonally confident and academically competent individual witha lot of workenergy
