Presentation by Lee Davies to the Memnet annual conference April 2010, looking at the challenges membership and professional bodies face in embracing social media.
Lisa Bordian began the class with very little technology experience or skills, having never heard of a PLN, Facebook, hyperlinks, or used a Smart Board. Through the course, she learned to utilize various tools like Twitter, Pinterest, Edmodo and Microsoft's PiL Network to develop her own PLN and connect with educational experts. She shares screenshots of her new Twitter account and discusses experts she follows like @Edudemic, @2Learn_ca and @NAEYC. Lisa reflects on coming a long way from needing phone support to use basic tools to now being able to independently use resources through her PLN and continue learning.
Edmodo is a free, secure social learning platform for teachers, students, and parents. It allows teachers to post class materials, assignments, grades, and messages, and students to communicate, collaborate, and access course content. Content like videos, links, and documents can be shared. Edmodo provides similar social features to Facebook but in a private, education-focused format controlled by teachers. Over 1 million users employ Edmodo for communication, collaboration, and accessing classroom materials from any device using the mobile website or app.
Social networks allow people to connect virtually with friends and make new friends by sharing content and interacting in communities of similar interests like work, hobbies, games, and relationships. Popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter enable users to interact with friends and family, comment on news or topics, and learn writing skills, while Google provides search and educational tools to find information and facilitate learning.
This document discusses social networking and provides an overview of popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, and Skype. It outlines advantages of social networking like worldwide connectivity and real-time information sharing. However, it also notes disadvantages such as cyberbullying, privacy issues, fraud/identity theft risks, and addiction. The conclusion emphasizes that social networking can be helpful if used wisely but cautions about overuse and sharing personal information with strangers.
The document contains discussions from 5 groups about various topics related to social networks and their use among children. Group 1 discusses the percentage of children aged 9-12 who have social media profiles and considerations around privacy and security for children under 12. Group 2 looks at the percentage of parents who do and do not control their children's social media use. Group 3 examines ways schools are using social media for educational purposes. Group 4 covers children's understanding of privacy settings and communicating with strangers online. Group 5 discusses the potential for addiction to social networks and overuse of online activities.
Edmodo training power_point_new_ parents_2013sdennis222
Edmodo is a social learning network that connects over 20 million learners worldwide. It allows teachers to engage students, personalize learning, measure progress, and connect with students, parents and administrators. Teachers can create groups for classes and invite students to join using a provided code. Students can access assignments, resources and communicate with teachers through a mobile app or web browser. Parents can also join groups using a parent code to monitor their child's progress in a secure, read-only environment.
The document summarizes key topics from a workshop on social networks. It discusses 1) the best age to start using social networks and the importance of parental control, 2) how parents can monitor their children's social media usage, 3) debates around using social media in education, 4) privacy concerns with communicating online, and 5) the risk of getting addicted to social networks and the importance of balance. The workshop encouraged group discussions on both benefits and risks of different social media topics.
This document discusses internet safety and outlines various issues students and educators may face online. It notes that while some dangers are obvious, like cyberbullying and interacting with strangers, others are less so. Some of the less obvious issues mentioned are protecting passwords and student data for educators. The document encourages people to be smart about protecting their identity online and understanding technology, and suggests monitoring internet use as a precaution.

Some of the less obvious issues mentioned are protecting passwords and student data for educators. The document encourages people to be smart about protecting their identity online and understanding technology, and suggests monitoring internet use as a precaution.
This document discusses the importance of keeping staff digital skills up to date. It argues that digital technologies can help learners thrive by meeting their basic needs, feeling safe and supported, developing self-esteem, and encouraging creativity. Examples are given of how specific edtech tools helped individual students, including Immersive Reader helping a performing arts student learn lines independently despite dyslexia, Google Translate building an ESL student's confidence, and SeeingAI allowing a visually impaired student to access content. The document advocates using a variety of digital methods to reach "unreachable" students.
This document summarizes responses from Twitter on how tools like Twitter and Skype can help teachers improve. Teachers said that these tools help expand their professional networks, provide quick access to new ideas and resources from around the world, and enhance communication. Twitter specifically allows teachers to connect with others, get new perspectives on teaching topics, and find inspiration in short messages.
This document discusses social media and cyberbullying. It begins by defining several major social media networks like Facebook, which was founded in 2004, and Twitter, which launched in 2006. It then lists pros and cons of social media use, such as enabling information spread but also false information. The document defines cyberbullying as deliberate, repeated harassment using technology to harm others. Cyberbullies use tools like email, phones, and social media. Cyberbullying differs from traditional bullying in that it can be anonymous and occur off school grounds. The document concludes by suggesting backup discussion activities on social media opinions and anti-bullying.
21st Century Connected School SlideshareOllie Bray
The document discusses connecting local education partners like teachers, students, families, and the community at Musselburgh Grammar School. It emphasizes the importance of understanding how children use the internet differently than adults and educating families on internet safety. New technologies are converging on mobile devices, so safety messages must be updated accordingly.
Alexandria School District - 21st Century LiteracyBarry Dahl
The document discusses the skills needed for literacy in the 21st century, including information literacy, digital media authoring, higher-order thinking, and global awareness. It argues that while traditional literacy skills are still important, students now need to be able to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively in a digital world, communicate using digital media, think critically, and understand issues from a global perspective. The document also addresses how teachers and students access and understand information differently today compared to the past.
This document discusses the use of social media in education. It notes that while students' personal lives increasingly involve technology, their school experiences often do not reflect this reality. The document then provides statistics on teenagers' and young adults' use of social networking sites and blogging. It establishes that social media can be used as tools for blogging, wikis, and social networking to connect people. However, it also notes issues like privacy and policies that arise. The document concludes by suggesting ways social media can be used to connect professionals and share knowledge to improve lives, and that students should learn for life regardless of available technology.
The Digital Divide and Teaching: How Do Our Students Really Use Technology?Derek Bruff
This document discusses how students use technology compared to instructors. It begins by asking students and instructors to reflect on how they commonly use technology in similar or different ways. It then discusses the concepts of "digital natives" and "digital immigrants" to describe students who grew up with technology versus those who adopted it later. However, it notes this distinction is more complex than a simple age-based divide. Student focus groups reveal they commonly use social media and the internet for keeping in touch with others, getting news and entertainment. The document concludes by highlighting key principles for integrating technology in teaching, such as having a clear goal, explaining the purpose of technological tools, allowing time for students to learn new technologies, and not underestim
A digital native is someone who has grown up with technology and uses it in all aspects of their life. They process information differently than digital immigrants and are not afraid of new technologies. Digital natives learn visually, through movement, multi-task, collaborate with others, and can be obsessive with digital pursuits. Technology is integrated into their work, play, relaxation, communication, education, and virtual worlds. They stay connected through blogs, chat rooms, social media, and expect technology to be used in the classroom.
The document discusses various free technology tools that teachers can use to help students develop 21st century skills and better integrate technology into the classroom. It provides examples of tools for creating presentations, videos, posters, online discussions, and collaborating with other students and authors. The tools can be used across subjects to engage students and prepare them for a digital world.
This document discusses teachers' use of social networking and technology. It suggests that while some teachers may feel overwhelmed by constantly changing technology, staying safe online is important. It promotes using Edmodo, a social media platform designed for education, to interact with students. Overall it encourages teachers to embrace technology as it continues advancing, for the benefit of students' learning and preparation for their digital future.
This document discusses teachers' use of social networking and technology. It finds that while some teachers may lack time or interest to stay up to date, technology is advancing rapidly so teachers must embrace it. This begins with staying safe online by avoiding suspicious emails or public computers. Social networking is popular due to instant gratification, but users must share responsibly as information persists digitally. Edmodo is recommended as a secure educational social network where teachers can interact with students and classes. Technology proficiency is becoming necessary for teachers to prepare students and avoid being left behind themselves.
All of Our Students are On Social Media, But What Do We Need to Know?Chad Norman
Tweens and teens are predisposed to communicating online in similar ways to texting, with over half checking social media sites daily and some checking over 10 times per day. While social media provides opportunities to connect, it also poses pitfalls like privacy issues, cyberbullying, and impact on future employment that schools need to address through education and social media policies for students and staff. Educators were encouraged to create guidelines and educate all groups about both opportunities and risks of social media use.
This document provides an overview of social media and guidelines for educators on appropriate social media use. It defines social media as a trend where people use technology to get things from each other rather than traditional institutions. It then discusses why people use social media to share information and stay connected. It cautions that email and social media have made communication more casual and discusses privacy laws like FERPA that protect student information. Overall, it provides best practices for educators to thoughtfully engage with social media while avoiding privacy violations or inappropriate disclosures.
Using Twitter and PLNs teach students to conceptualize, think, and write in 140 characters. Formatively assess students and reteach them to customize learning and ensure competence. Ten things to know about digital learnersKeri Lauxman
The document discusses findings from a survey of over 430,000 K-12 students on their use of and preferences for digital learning tools. Some key findings include:
- 42% of middle school students think taking an online or virtual class, especially math, should be a graduation requirement.
- Students regularly use online videos and digital tools like email and texting to communicate with teachers and for homework help.
- Most students think mobile devices should be used more during school for classwork and learning and are already using their own smartphones and taking photos of assignments.
- While social media use is down, students are spending more time on content creation sites like YouTube. Different digital tools are preferred for different tasks.

How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.
