2. THE ABODE OF CLOUDS FACTS
• This state is bounded to the south by the Bangladeshi divisions of Mymensingh and
Sylhet, to the west by the Bangladeshi division of Rangpur, and to the east by India's
Assam state. The capital is Shillong, known as the "Scotland of the East". Meghalaya
was previously part of Assam, but on 21 January 1972, the districts of Khasi, Garo and
Jaintia hills became the new state of Meghalaya. English is the official language of
Meghalaya. The other principal languages spoken include Khasi, Pnar and Garo. Unlike
many Indian states, Meghalaya has historically followed a matrilineal system where the
lineage and inheritance are traced through women; the youngest daughter inherits all
wealth and she also takes care of her parents.
• The state is the wettest region of India, recording an average of 12,000 mm (470 in) of
rains a year. About 70% of the state is forested. The Meghalaya subtropical forests
ecoregion encompasses the state; its mountain forests are distinct from the lowland
tropical forests to the north and south. The forests are notable for their biodiversity of
mammals, birds, and plants.

The bridges are tangles of massive thick roots, which have been intermingled to form a bridge that can hold
several people at a time. Khasi people have been trained to grow these bridges across the raised banks of
streams to form a solid bridge, made from roots. The living bridges are made from the roots of the Ficus elastica
tree, which produces a series of secondary roots that are perched atop huge boulders along the streams or the
riverbanks to form bridges.

5. 2. UMIAM LAKE
• Umiam Lake is synonymous with Shillong, Meghalaya. It is a man-made lake that covers an
expanse of 221 sq kms; which makes it bigger than the country of Liechtenstein and
American Samoa respectively! It is also almost 4 times the size of San Marino or Bermuda.
The lake provides residents with water and is also their source of fish. Umiam literally
translates into ‘water of tears’.

6. 3.NOHKALIKAI FALLS
• Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1115 feet (340 meters), making it as
the highest waterfall in India. The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on
Earth.

7. 4.ELEPHANT FALLS(SHILLONG)
• A popular tourist spot in East Khasi Hills District, Upper Shillong, Elephant Falls are named so because of an
elephant-shaped rock adjacent to them. Locally, the falls are known as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew.
Situated at a distance of 12 km from Shillong, its scenic beauty has earned it a huge number of admirers,
especially couples and families. Its crystal clear white water and the nearby greenery creates a dreamy world
which is worth clicking.

8. 5.WARD'S LAKE (SHILLONG)
• Ward’s Lake is a refreshing pool surrounded by beautiful gardens in the heart of
the city. The serene lake and the cool shades of trees around it, makes it a nice
spot for sightseeing and boating. As the name suggest, it is a lake surrounded
by patch of land with some exotic trees. In winter the park sheds most of its
hues along with the leaves; except for the oddly rejuvenated cherry blossoms,
which paint the park in lovely off-white pink.A stylish white wooden bridge
suspended in the middle of the lake is the most recognizable feature of Ward’s
Lake.

9. 6.MAWJYMBUIN CAVE (SHILLONG)
• Mawjymbuin Cave is one of the well known caves in Meghalaya. This cave, due to
years of weathering and due to dripping of mineralized solutions and deposition
of calcium carbonate, it has thus given rise to some magnificent stalagmites. These
stalagmites are not only important and of great interest for geological research
but also because of their exquisiteness. The stalagmite of the Mawjymbuin Cave is
shaped into a massive Shivalinga. The cave also has a dome shaped rock with a
flat top called the Symper Rock.

10. 7.SEVEN SISTERS FALLS (CHERRAPUNJEE)
• This waterfall is also known as Seven Sister Falls or Mawsmai Falls, the latter being the name
of a village The Seven Sister Falls derives its name from the seven streams that flow down
the plateau like feature. This is a must see attraction during the monsoons, when the
streams are inundated with water and flow down rapidly forming a perennial rainbow much
to the delight of tourists.

11. 8.LAITLUM CANYONS (SHILLONG)
• Perched in the East Khasi Hills of Shillong, Laitlum Canyons is a little-explored
haunt of the mountainous state of Meghalaya. Laitlum translates to ‘end of hills’
and this sublimely beautiful hilltop appears to be true to its name. At Laitlum, all
one can see are breathtaking gorges and steep winding stairways that snake their
way down to the lush valley.

12. 9.KA KHOH RAMHAH (CHERRAPUNJEE)
• Also known as Mothorp and Pillar Rock, Khoh Ramhah is one of the main tourist attractions
of Cherrapunjee. The major highlight here is the impressive shape of the rock that is in the
form of a huge cone. The rock is bounded by 2 smaller rocks in the same shape. The place is
also popular as a picnic spot. An ideal time to visit the place is monsoon when the scenic
beauty of the place gets enhanced.

13. 10.NONGKHNUM ISLAND
• Nongkhnum Island is the biggest river island in Meghalaya and the second biggest river island in Asia,
after Majuli Island in Assam. Located about 14 Kms from Nongstoin, the district hqs. of West Khasi Hills,
it is 20 to 25 sq. kms in area. Travelling on foot from Nongstoin through the villages of Lawse, Mawduh
and Mawthar, it takes about two and a half-hours to reach the Island. There is a wooden bridge over
the Weinia Fall to enter the Island.
The Island is formed by the bifurcation of Kynshi River into the Phanliang River and the Namliang River.
At the point of divergence, there is a beautiful sandy shore about 100 sq. meters in area.
