Meghalaya is known as the 'abode of clouds' and is blessed with abundant natural beauty including forests, plateaus, waterfalls, and rivers. Some of Meghalaya's most beautiful waterfalls include the Nohkalikai Falls, which is the tallest plunge waterfall in India; the Dainthlen Falls near Sohra, with a legend of a giant snake; and the Seven Sisters Waterfalls near Mawsmai, which has seven segments stretching along a limestone cliff. Meghalaya offers visitors stunning natural scenery across its national parks and waterfalls.

2. Meghalaya known as the ‘abode of clouds’ is one of the most beautiful state in the country. Nature
has blessed the state with abundant rainfall, sun-shine, virgin forests, high plateaus, tumbling
waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, meandering streamlets and above all with strong, intelligent and
hospitable people. Carved from the erstwhile State of Assam, Meghalaya became a full fledged
State on January 21,1972.

3. Lum Kyllang (Kyllang Rock), Mawsmai, Mairang, West Khasi Hills
Kyllang Rock which is made of a single, huge solid igneous rock is
situated at Mawsmai about 10 kms from Mairang, the sub-divisional
Head Quarter. The top of the dome-shape rock can accommodate a
considerable number of picnickers. Folklore has it that the rock
possesses a sort of magnetic field since, so far, no one has ever fallen
off the slope of the huge rock. It can be developed into a good rock-
climbing site.

the rainbow. Both the sides
of the falls is surrounded
with rocks of different
shapes, sizes and colours.

7. Weinia Falls, Nongkhnum Island,
Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills

8. Sweet Falls is a very steep fall, it is one of the most mesmerizing waterfalls in the country. The beauty
of the waterfall along with gargling sound of the water, bird chirps and rich flora are the highlights of
this fall. Situated near Happy Valley, at a distance of about 8 Kms from Shillong, the waterfall is a
famous picnic spot for the locals as well as tourists. Water cascades down from a great height which
is hardly visible from the foot of falls

10. Shillong View Point
• Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, one of the
smallest states in India and home to the Khasis. It
is also the headquarters of the East Khasi Hills
district and is situated at an average altitude of
4,908 feet (1,496 m) above sea level, with the
highest point being Shillong Peak at 6,449 feet
(1,966 m). The city had a population of 314,610
according to the 2011 census. It is said that the
rolling hills around the town reminded the European
settlers of Scotland. Hence, Shillong is also known
as "Scotland of the East." Shillong has steadily
grown in size and significance since it was made
the civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in 1864
by the British.

12. Dainthlen Falls, Sohra
• Just before reaching Sohra, a road to the right,
leads one to the falls which is 5 kms away. The
waterfall derives its name from a Thlen or a
snake of gigantic size which dwelt in a cave.
Legend has it that the people destroyed the
snake in order to rid themselves of its reign of
terror. Adjacent to the very spot where the Thlen
was slaughtered lies the Dain-thlen Waterfalls.
Natural rock carvings of the epi-sode draw
visitors to see the image of the Thlen, the
symbol of greed, corruption and evil.

16. The Langshiang Falls
The Langshiang Falls is located near the village of
Sangriang, 24 kilometres from Nongstoin, in West
Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. It can also be
seen from Mawpon village.
The total height of the falls is generally quoted at
around 337 metres (1,106 ft). However, that needs
to be confirmed.
Nongkhnum Island, the biggest river island in
Meghalaya is 10 kilometres from Langshiang
Falls.

18. Nohkalikai Falls
• Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plungewaterfall in India. Its
height is 1100 feet (335 metres).
The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the
wettest places on Earth. It is also the fourth largest
waterfall in the world.
Name of the falls (in Khasi language - "Jump of Ka
Likai") is linked to a legend about local women Likai who
after family tragedy became insane and jumped off the
cliff next to the falls.

20. • The Nohsngithiang Falls is also known as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls and the
Mawsmai Falls. It is located 1 kilometre south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills
district in Meghalaya.
It is a seven-segmented waterfall, which plunges over the top of limestone cliffs of the
Khasi Hills. The falls only flow during the rainy season.
In full spate, the segments stretch most of the way along the cliff. The water falls from
a height of 315 metres (1,033 ft) and has an average width of 70 metres (230 ft).
In the Sohra area, there are several waterfalls because of the heavy rainfall The
cascading Nohsngithiang waterfalls at Mawsmai, the hauntingly beautiful Nohkalikai
Falls, and the Dain Thlen Falls.
The Jaintia Hills and the Garo Hills too have their share of beautiful waterfalls, notably
the Tyrchi Falls en route to Jowai and the Pelga Falls near Tura in Garo Hills.

22. Kynrem Falls
• The Kynrem Falls is located 12 kilometres
from Cherrapunji in East Khasi Hills district
of Meghalaya. It is situated inside the
Thangkharang Park.
The Kynrem Falls is a three-tiered
waterfalls, with water falling from a height
of 305 metres (1,001 ft).
