JHARKHAND
• The state of Jharkhand was carved out of the state of Bihar in 15 NOV 2000. It is
located in the eastern part of the country and has Madhya Pradesh and West
Bengal as neighbours apart from Bihar and Odisha. While Ranchi is the capital city
of Jharkhand state, largest remains Jamshedpur.
• Hindi is the official language of the state and Urdu is the second official language. In
total Jharkhand (JK) state comprises 24 districts.
• Statehood was the culmination of a long struggle carried on primarily by the
Adivasis, or Scheduled Tribes (an official term applied primarily
to indigenous communities that fall outside the predominant
Indian caste hierarchy).
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
• Jhumair: It is performed during harvest and festival season in which people
hold hands and dance in circles. The musical instruments used in this
festival include Mandar, Dhol, Bansi, Nagara, Dhak, Shehnai and Khartal.
• Domkach: A dance performed by the family of the bridegroom on the
occasion of marriage. The theme of the songs carried in this dance is
satirical. Some of the many songs played are ek haria, dohri, adh ratia,
bihanwa.
• Painki: A Nagpuri martial dance performed by men wearing ghungroos. The
dance is composed of sword and shield carrying accompanied by music
played on the Nagara, Dhak and Shehnai.
Chhau dance: A semi classical dance with martial, tribal and folk tradition.
Seraikella Chhau is found in Seraikella district of Jharkhand.
• Mundari dance: A dance performed by the Munda tribe during harvest and
festival season.
• Santali dance: A dance performed by the Santal tribe during harvest and
festival season.

• Some of the major festivals which are celebrated with great fun and pomp
are Sarhul, Karma, Sohrai, Badna, Tusu, Id, Christmas, Holi, Dussehra, etc.
• Chhath Puja is reckoned as one of the most important festivals of Jharkhand
which is celebrated twice year, namely in the month of March and November.
• Common Baidya surnames are Sengupta, Dasgupta, Duttagupta,Gupta, Sen-
Sharma, etc. Bengali Kayastha surnames include Basu, Bose, Dutta, Ghosh,
Guha, Gain, Mitra,Singh/Sinha, Sen, Pal, De/Dey/Deb/Dev, Palit,
Chanda/Chandra, Das, Dam, Kar, Nandi, Sarkar,Nag, Som etc.
CELEBRATION AND RITUALS
• The most common dress of the men of Jharkhand is a single
piece of cloth known as Bhagwan. However the non tribal
people of the state generally opt for kurta and pyjamas. The
non-tribal women just like the men opt for modern costumes
and most commonly wear a sari and a blouse.

1. Sarhul
It's a festival of happiness and celebrated for weeks especially in the region of
chotanagpur. Traditional drums, dhols etc are played.
2. Chhath Pooja
One of the most famous festival of Jharkhand as well as North India. It is
dedicated to the worshipping of the Sun god or Surya and also known as Surya
shashthi. People ask the Earth and the Sun dities to grant wishes.
3. JANI-SHIKGAAR
This festival advocates the right of equity.Women's wear men's cloth, carry
traditional weapons and go to jungle for hunting.Men's are not allowed in this
celebration.
4. KUNDA MELA
It is one of the major castle fair of Jharkhand. It is held at the time of phalgun
Shivratri. Other similar type fair are Chatra Mela during the time of Durga Puja.
