L’année 2017 marque la fin d’un cycle et l’ouverture d’une nouvelle période quinquennale. Les structures de recherche de l’Ifsttar ont été particulièrement sollicitées depuis l’année 2014, avec la préparation de leurs dossiers d’évaluation par le HCERES fin 2014, par celle de l’établissement pour tous les aspects gouvernance et management fin 2015, par la réflexion désormais achevée sur les thématiques prioritaires de l’Ifsttar et l’élaboration d’un nouveau Contrat d’Objectifs et de Performance, pour la période 2017-20121. Les équipes vont pouvoir disposer en 2017 d’une année relativement légère en sollicitations stratégiques - les évaluations sont passées, une stratégie scientifique à 10 ans précisée a été validée en conseil scientifique et en conseil d’administration - et se concentrer sur leur cœur de métier. Cela n’empêchera évidemment pas de suivre avec attention les suites données aux recommandations faites par les comités d’expert mandatés par le HCERES, avec un examen à mi-parcours en Conseil Scientifique de l’Ifsttar. L’année 2017 devrait être particulière sur deux volets : 1- La mise en œuvre du nouveau Contrat d’Objectifs et de Performance 2017-2021 de l’Ifsttar. 2- Les suites des structurations des grands ensembles d’enseignement et de recherche, issues ou portées par les réponses aux appels lancés dans le cadre du PIA2, en particulier les projets d’IdEx et d’I-Site, en lien avec les différents sites de l’Ifsttar. Future Agenda

There are great expectations around the future of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and equally much uncertainty. Some believe that AVs will transform safety and efficiency and are making significant investments in this area. Others are concerned that the technological developments are outpacing society’s ability to adapt, and there is an urgent requirement to develop better regulation before there is widespread deployment. A global Open Foresight project exploring the key issues for the future of AVs is being undertaken by Future Agenda. Expert workshops around the world are building the informed view. This project was kicked-off with a global review of the emerging landscape for autonomous vehicles. As well looking at the historical context for self-driving cars and trucks, this initial perspective explores the benefits of AVs; different issues for the movement of people vs. goods; the three primary drivers of adoption and the primary centres for innovation. It also includes commentary on the parallel developments in seaborne and air-based autonomous vehicles. It ends with some of the key questions to be explored by the project.

How will sensor technology shape the cars of the future? We are only at the very beginning of a bright future for sensor providers – be prepared for the golden age of the automotive sensor industry. THE REBORN AUTOMOTIVE SENSOR MARKET WILL BE WORTH MORE THAN $20B BY 2022 In a global automotive market worth than US$2.3T, the little world of automotive sensors has recently been shaken up by the emergence of electric and autonomous cars. Despite just 3% growth in the volume of cars sold expected through to 2022, Yole Développement (Yole) expects an average growth rate in sensors sales volumes above 8% over the next five years, and above 14% growth in sales value. This is thanks to the expanding integration of high value sensing modules like RADAR, imaging and LiDAR. The current automotive sensing market groups MEMS and classic active sensors such as pressure, tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), chemical, inertial, magnetic, ultrasonic, imaging, RADAR and LiDAR. We estimate that this market is worth US$11B in 2016 and is expected to reach US$23B by 2022. This is mainly due to the boom in imaging, RADAR and LiDAR sensors, which will respectively be worth US$7.7B, US$6.2B and US$1.4B by 2022. Among classical sensors like pressure, chemical and magnetic sensors, the impact of electric vehicles will remain small in the short term. However, the advent of electrical vehicles will greatly change the amount and the distribution of pressure and magnetic sensors within the car in the longer term. More electric cars will mean fewer pressure sensors and a surge in magnetic sensors for battery monitoring and various positioning and detection of moving pieces. Finally, we believe that the automotive world is experiencing one of the fastest-changing eras in its evolution ever. Sensor suppliers are now engaged in a race where they need to be prepared for the golden age of the automotive world.
