Bimala is a 7-year-old girl from India who is in the first grade. She speaks Hindi at home and has been in the US for 2 years. She is at a beginning English proficiency level. Bimala likes pink, horses, and Disney princesses. She comes from a small farming town in western Bengal, India. Her family lives in a two-bedroom apartment near Bimala's school and her uncle helps translate for the family. Bimala is quiet and sensitive. She needs explicit vocabulary instruction and pre-reading activities to improve her English learning.
