Buddhism originated in India over 2500 years ago when Gautama Buddha founded the religion. His teachings were spread verbally and meditation was an important practice in both Buddhism and Shintoism, the two main religions in Japan. During medieval Japan from 1221-1600, Zen Buddhism grew due to the support of Buddhist nuns and monks, who helped study and teach the religion's teachings and rituals.
