Challenges for researchers in the Digital Humanities
The digital evolution of our society is increasingly affecting and enabling research in the humanities where digital resources and cultural datasets are now being considered as valuable research material. This evolution has increased the need for infrastructures and web environments where researchers from the humanities can collaboratively work on their data and even actively involve citizens. But while this digital evolution also brings new opportunities for service providers, there are many challenges to overcome when collaborating with humanities research groups in the development of their research infrastructures. At LIBIS, a service provider for information solutions at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven - Belgium), we have experienced some of the main issues being the sometimes limited technological knowhow of the researchers, but especially the lack of resources for the continued maintenance and support of the digital humanities infrastructures and datasets after the project funding period has ended.
This presentation focusses on a number of Humanities infrastructure projects in which library, archival and museum tools have been used in combination with other open source and proprietary systems to provide a sustainable and innovative environment for different humanities research groups. We like to share our experiences on the active collaboration with the researchers in the writing of project proposals and the design and development of their infrastructures as well as provide a set of recommendations concerning the selection of tools and standards to guarantee a long lasting collaboration.

This Tin Hau Temple in Joss House Bay - 大廟灣 天后廟 , HK is the fourth of my Powerpoint series on Chinese architecture. The others were the Forbidden City - Beijing , Cheng Hoon Teng – Chinese temple in Malacca and the Nan Lian Garden – Diamond Hill Hong Kong.
This temple is unfamiliar to most who live in Hong Kong. This is because of temple is situated at a very remote location, in Hong Kong. There were no village around. In the past you can only go to the temple by boat but in recent years a new road was built near the temple, linking it to the Clear Water Bay.
The most interesting thing about this temple is that it has a very long history, some 800 year old much longer than the present building. Personally I know the temple very well. I went there every year when I was a kid, on the Tin Hau festival. It was not so much for the religious pilgrimage but as a day in the country having a picnic on the hills with family and friends. The Chinese attitude toward religion is much more pragmatic than dogmatic, at least as far as the general population is concerned. It has more to do with rituals than beliefs. To me the temple is a testament to the developing maritime trade in China during the Song Dynasty some 1000 years ago, when the Silk Road was cut off from China. Many of the maritime trades then were inter-provincial trades rather than the overseas trades.
Medieval period

This Tin Hau Temple in Joss House Bay - 大廟灣 天后廟 , HK is the fourth of my Powerpoint series on Chinese architecture. The others were the Forbidden City - Beijing , Cheng Hoon Teng – Chinese temple in Malacca and the Nan Lian Garden – Diamond Hill Hong Kong.
This temple is unfamiliar to most who live in Hong Kong. This is because of temple is situated at a very remote location, in Hong Kong. There were no village around. In the past you can only go to the temple by boat but in recent years a new road was built near the temple, linking it to the Clear Water Bay.
The most interesting thing about this temple is that it has a very long history, some 800 year old much longer than the present building. Personally I know the temple very well. I went there every year when I was a kid, on the Tin Hau festival. It was not so much for the religious pilgrimage but as a day in the country having a picnic on the hills with family and friends. The Chinese attitude toward religion is much more pragmatic than dogmatic, at least as far as the general population is concerned. It has more to do with rituals than beliefs. To me the temple is a testament to the developing maritime trade in China during the Song Dynasty some 1000 years ago, when the Silk Road was cut off from China. Many of the maritime trades then were inter-provincial trades rather than the overseas trades.
Medieval period

- 2. Art Tibetan art is considered sacred and is usually deeply religious. Scroll paintings appeared around the eleventh century and usually on cotton or linen. Many Tantric Buddhist art pieces represent wrathful gods . These gods represent dedication to protect the dharma teaching. The shamanistic religion of Bon, contains art pieces that show angry gods who inflict harm and sickness on local citizens.
- 3. Architecture Tibetan architecture includes Indian, Chinese, and Buddhist influences. Almost every Gompa in Tibet has the Buddhist prayer wheel on it. Many buildings are built facing the south and are on elevated land. They are made from a mixture of wood, rocks, cement, and dirt. To conserve heat many houses have flat roofs and have many windows for light. Walls of the structure are usually tilted inward by about ten degrees for safety because of the many earthquakes. The Potala Palace was designated as the World’s Heritage Site in 1994.
- 4. Music Tibetan music is mainly based on religion such as Buddhism. Sharing religious teachings through song have been around since around the twelfth century. Tibetan “street songs” were ways for people to speak political or religious views in a time where there were no newspapers. Many of the religions requires the chanting of sacred texts or in celebration of festivals. Tibetan singers usually have strong vocal abilities which many attribute to the high altitude. Purba Rgyal was the 2006 winner of Haonaner, the Chinese version of American Idol.
