At the present time America has about 20 million immigrants from Mexico and South America. As
economies of Third World country continue to deteriorate more and more people will come to
America. Everybody wants what America has but because of the agendas of Third World country
politicians and the corruption of governments and the war over illegal criminal activities the safe
haven of America will still be the priority of people around the world. The demographics of the
United States we will continue to move to a change in diversity from a white majority to really
know majority at all. The Hispanic population continues to grow in America while the white
population continues to decline. The African–American population has already moved from the
largest minority to the second largest minority be replaced by the Hispanic minority. If this trend
continues by 2050 we can see the Hispanic population become the majority of the largest minority
and other people who have not had to fight for civil rights may now find themselves as a beneficiary
of those civil rights battles fought by other minorities.
What challenges does the United States face due to the diversity of its people?
The first issue that comes to mind is language. If the Hispanic population becomes a majority will
we see a change in the language that is not only taught but spoken in America. Many merchants and
government agencies now speak Spanish as well as English. The

The Aspects Of Gender Stereotyping In The Media
Gender stereotyping in media has existed since the beginning of media itself. From newspaper ads
to billboards to movies, men and women have been put in certain molds that have proven consistent
over time. Gender stereotyping, however, is no longer relevant in today's society. In the 1950s,
making women gentle mothers or secretaries and men strong builders or businessmen may have
sold, but it is becoming more and more common for these stereotypes to be less than sufficient. In
media, stereotypes are becoming more subtle, but are still there; it is not surprising that a war has
been waged against these stereotypes and any perpetuators who seem insistent upon keeping them.
Gender stereotypes are outdated and not relevant to today's society. The fight for female stereotypes
to be eradicated is strong and unyielding. This fight is met with copious amounts of backlash, with
people complaining that stereotypes are not a real concern in modern America. However, American
media has proven to be obsessed with placing women in a certain mold. It is certainly no secret that
women in movies and television shows are not always portrayed to their full potential. An awesome
female character who has the potential to be an amazing role model is often reduced to a beautiful
face, rather than a key character or problem solver. The character Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin
could be an example of this. She is portrayed as strong and wanting to be independent, but
throughout the entire movie

The Media And Its Effects On Society
These days, sexism in the media is one of the top issues confronting women in Canada. Female
political candidates often experience a toxic environment that can adversely affect their campaigns.
The constantly changing media scene regularly permits harmful remarks to exist without
responsibility. The under–representation of women in media is an all–inclusive wonder. Despite the
fact that there have been improvements, women still fall behind men in numerical representation in
government. The sexual orientation depiction studies have recorded that the media have been
careless in reacting to sex equalization. Women are either overlooked totally or are lessened to
imperceptible status through under–representation in innovative and basic ... Show more content on

This is not to say that all information conveyed by the media is heterogeneous, as unreasonable talk
is additionally present. Be that as it may, the pervasive dispersal of prevailing philosophies holds on
as a worry among minority populations, as their voices are regularly oppressed and disregarded
inside standard media. Social movements, which can be approximately characterized as cognizant
aggregate endeavors to change some parts of the social request, are hard to depict with accuracy.
Major social movements contain inside themselves numerous subgroupings which may contrast in
vital ways. The women 's movement, for instance, incorporates liberal, radical and Marxist women 's
activists, ecofeminists, lesbian separatists and the individuals who view lesbianism as one way of
life among others; in spite of the fact that these groupings debate about various issues, they do
concede to the fundamental need to enhance the circumstance of women. The women 's movement
has been working for social equity for women along a wide range of fronts, including legislative
issues, culture, the mass media, law, instruction, wellbeing, the work power, religion, nature and
home. Consolidating the battle against sexism with a battle against prejudice has turned out to be
progressively imperative. The authoritative structure incorporates groups of each size and from each
locale, including national and global ones. In the mass media, women 's activist writers and the work

Feminists and Media Stereotypes
The media portrays feminists in unflattering ways. Largely because of the media portrayal, the word
'feminist' usually evokes images of crass, butch, men–hating, very masculine women. Many women
believe in the feminist doctrine, but they would never consider themselves as a feminist because
they cannot relate to the images of crass, butch, men–hating, masculine women. In fact, it has only
been within the past year that I've been able to accept the fact that I am a feminist and that my
preconceived images of feminists are merely media stereotypes.
I'm now able to admit I care more about my own rights than whether or not someone will assume I

hirsute bodies, and small breasts." According to (author, Peter) Gay, "Feminists were denigrated as

Who would want to be associated with such a group? Who would want others to think less of them
because they're involved with a group of "ugly" "small–breasted" "repulsive" women? Over time,
the number of women willing to stand–up to the stereotype and count themselves as feminists has
grown, but this offensive myth still keeps some women away. People simply do not want to be
associated with a group that has such stereotypes. Some women today are willing to call themselves
"feminists", stereotypes be damned. Yet many others need to show that they are still feminine
despite the fact that they are feminists. There are feminine feminist web rings on the web. One such

Gender Stereotyping in Internationally Televised Media Sports Coverage

Abstract
Sports fans usually acknowledge various sports through different mass media outlets. To develop
our comprehension of social qualities inserted in sports and to investigate current values and power
structures in regards to men and women, it is important to explore the potential impact that media
may have in manipulating conventions about gender–appropriate sport conduct. One question that
will be answered is, does mass media influence the beliefs about gender–appropriate sport behavior
during the broadcast of various sports? To help answer this question three sets of participants are
going to be involved. Ranging from 16 to 26 years of age, the sets will include individuals who have
ample knowledge regarding various sports, individuals who have no–in–depth knowledge, and
finally individuals who are active athletes throughout various levels like high school, college, and
professional leagues. These individuals will view interviews, and coverage of different athletes,
sports and events present in the Olympics. Following the exposure to the various segments,
participants will complete a questionnaire and a survey regarding their experience during the
viewing. With an international aspect and various races, cultures, and genders a change in both the
representation of genders and the traditional expectations of genders would be present with a change

Essay on Stereotyping in the Media
The world today has become quite a diverse place. People of any color, race, or ethnicity, can go to
the same school, restaurant, bathroom, and even date one another. The world is constantly changing
and learning from its diverse inhabitants, so why hasn't¬¬¬¬ the media been up to speed with the
rest of the world? Race has increasingly become this social concept that the media has embraced and
ran with. Inspiring millions, the media constantly transforms assumptions about particular groups of
people into "realities." (Media Stereotyping) The Media often inadequately represents minorities in
television shows or movies, which most of the time are demeaning to that particular race or
ethnicity. This inferiority put on the shoulders of colored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

African Americans, Mexican, Chinese, ect. are not the only people who do drugs or commit crimes.
In 2009, the Sentencing Project recorded a huge drop in black incarceration rates due to drugs and a
huge increase in the white incarceration rate.( http://www.blackagendareport.com/?q=content/black–
drug–incarceration–rates–down–white–numbers–way) Blacks declined to about 21.7 percent for
drug related arrests while whites nearly doubled black statistics by increasing their rates up to 42.6
percent. As it may seem not that much of a difference, Glen Ford reminds Americans that whites
make up 75 percent of the United States population, concluding in whites and African Americans to
do roughly the same amount of drugs.( http://www.blackagendareport.com/?q=content/black–drug–

African Americans and minorities for their faults when white people are just as much to blame? The
reason for their poverty is due to lack of jobs. Lack of jobs is to all the people out in the world who
look at them with their mind already made up, judge them before they even meet them. The lies
concocted by this social concept have lead to the inferiority African Americans and minorities face
every day. African Americans and minorities are deprived from the opportunities the free world
promised.

The Causes Of Stereotyping In The Rise Of The Media
In today world, with the rise of the media, some people said media are controlling people's options,
idea and attitude. It can be seen that stereotyping appear in everywhere, it plays a vital role in our
social life, it determines the attitude to the idea of the public.
A stereotype is "a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people."
(Cardwell, 1999). According to McGarty, Spears and Yzerbyt (2002), stereotypes help to explain,
save time and share the common belief. By stereotyping, it could be creating a medium which is
understandable, acceptable and universal.
Stereotype connotes something that may be untrue, is ethically and morally problematic, and should
be overcome (Devine, 1989). By stereotyping, the public can only see a very general view of certain
types of people or object, the viewpoint may just base on one of the same types of individual, it is a
preconceived notion as it does not mean that every person who belongs to the same genre possesses
such qualities. Stereotype allows us to ignore individual differences, it might easy to make a
misunderstanding on it (Rae and Piggott, 2014). The cause of stereotypes is because the individual
does not have enough time to understand the object, so that to use a formula to estimate the object,
for example, a tattooed man wearing black sunglasses smoking on the street would be considered a
gangster.
"Negative stereotypes seem far more common." (Rae and Piggott, 2014). "'The medium is the

Dual Perspective Analysis
1. Something I learned in this course is that I always seem to find myself in dual perspective. I
actually did not know there was even a word for this, because as the textbook stated is appears to be
innate in humans. However, I have encountered others who think with a closed mind or
egocentrically and I find it to be very damaging to their interpersonal relationships, and a drag of
someone to talk to. When I engage in dual perspective I am learning from my point of view, but also
from someone else's point of view. They too are showing me how and why to understand something
in a different light.
2. I noticed that I use an identity script when I talk too! I had thought about this concept prior, but I
had not viewed it as an identity script. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When using generalizations in discussion with one another I do believe it gives us both many
opportunities and many limitations. One opportunity is that we can use generalizations in
conversation with the generalized other and with the particular other. When communicating with the
particular other I find myself questioning generalizations much more often because I care and it is
my job as a loved one to make sure I am communicating effectively, and that is hard to do using
generalizations. However, at the same time we can have a subjective or unclear conversation and
still fill fulfilled from the conversation in some aspect because we got to interact with one another.
When communicating with the generalized other, we can use generalizations just to start or keep the
conversation going. Another benefit to generalizations is that you can find almost anybody to talk to,
given you know them somewhat, and form a better relationship through conversation. This may be
stereotyping, but I feel as if that is how we identify who we may become interested in or become
friends with. However, generalizations do have their limitations. When we generalize someone else's
communication we are not getting the full story and that can lead to misunderstandings in future
conversations and even misunderstandings of who they are. Moreover, our culture, race, gender,
sexual orientation, socioeconomic class and so forth determine much of whom we are and what our
thought process and communication style is like. So when we are talking to someone of a different
background we may be using these instant generalizations, but shouldn't because this is an
opportunity to learn from and understand one another. Generalizations assume that we all think and
communicate the same way and that is very much false and the less we generalize the more we learn

Symbolic Interactionism In The Media
Media has been one of the biggest influence in any person's life no matter what age they are. They
are so many forms of media which makes it almost impossible to avoid everyday, and with the
advancement of technology it is only going to get worse. Therefore, since it is almost impossible to
avoid media, companies use this to their advantage to send out messages or advertise their products
through the media. In addition to advertising through media, businesses send out subliminal
messages with symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism is a sociological perspective that is
influential in many areas of the sociological discipline, meaning that symbols are used to promote a
certain action from someone, but in this case I am referring to companies promoting consumer
participation through magazines and television shows.
Magazine reading has gone down in the past decade, but it is still a great way to advertise. Since the
amount of people reading magazines have gone down, magazine companies use symbolic
interactionism in a very unique way. The method is that they sell their magazines outside or near

One common form of symbolic interactionism is contests or sweepstakes to have the audience
participate in different aspects of the show other than watching the show such as downloading apps
or purchasing certain products associated with the show. An example of this would be the popular
show "Walking Dead"(AMC) which airs on TV network AMC. While watching an episode of the
show, there is a sweepstakes called "Dead Sweepstakes" which incorporates giving out two code
words during both commercial breaks that leads to prizes. Also, the TV series has video games,
figures, and apps to increase profit and advertise the show. Overall, the consumer's own interest is
their downfall because they are forced to see those advertisements and they sometimes succumb to

Body Stereotyping Within The Media
Mark LoPuzzo English 101 Mrs. Ball Senior Research Paper Body Stereotyping within the Media
"Of course you could stand to lose a few pounds." This was said by an individual struggling with
bulimia. The public is presented with thin, tall, muscular, and perfectly fit people in the media such
as magazines or television shows, making people with a more natural body image feel insecure and
unpleased with their body type. The media is promoting body stereotypes and it is negatively
affecting the public. The media displays the "average man" as being hairless and very well built
which may negatively affect the male population. Body stereotyping in the media can lead to body
dysmorphia. Body dysmorphia is common among the younger generation because they are more
adept at using social media. The media displays the "average man" as being hairless and very well
built which may negatively affect the male population. The public blames the media and celebrities
for supporting the idea of the "ideal" body type. Both men and women want slim, fit bodies. But the
media has turned both genders against each other making it a competition, which is negatively
affecting the public ("Body image concerns more men than women, research finds"). "According to
Chris Godsey, emphasis on male physical beauty in the media may contribute to negative body
image in boys and young men. He contends that repeated images of perfectly sculpted, hairless male
torsos

Stereotyping In The Media
Oppressed by the Rest
Racism is mostly expressed as being harsh or indifferent to one of another race or the opposite
gender. Racism was supposedly resolved after the north beat the south in the Civil War. The word
racism has gradually become less common as the word stereotype has become more popular.
Stereotyping has the same concept of racism, but the person stereotyping is not harsh or vocal. The
person that is stereotyping a group of people has a fixed image of how that group will act.
Stereotyping is very common in today's society. As more and more people gain easier access to
communicate via social media this problem has been growing. As evidence by women, Muslims,
and African– Americans there is a direct correlation between social media and racial stereotyping as
they both continue to exceed humanistic limits. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to a study done on gender stereotypes in mass media continues to oppress women by the
roles they played in the past. "Men have been perceived as the head of the household and women
were mainly housewives. Nowadays the differences between male and female roles are smaller,
however mass media still perpetuates traditional gender stereotypes" (krytyka). This may have been
true sixty years ago, but a lot of women support their families in 2015. The media oppresses women
by keeping them locked up in their old traditional roles. When women try to speak out against this
outrageousness they get ridiculed by powerful men on social media. Huffington Post wrote an article
on gender stereotypes stating, "This reticence of women in Social Media is largely a result of the
unfavorable, and even often abusive, responses they get purely on the basis of their gender"
(Ramasubbu). This is exactly what happens when women try to speak out about issues or politics.
They get verbally attacked with constant slanders and gender jokes.

Digital Access For Information : A World Changing Innovation
Digital Access to Information; A World Changing Innovation
YouTube. Social Media. Google. The internet itself. All of these things are key aspects of our
current society. It has been so finely integrated into our everyday lives that we could not imagine a
world without it. A few decades ago though, these things did not even exist. Digital access to
information has changed the way the current society and how people's everyday lives work. It has
created a new form of communication, accessing information as well as expressing oneself (via
social media). All of which, have both positive and negative effects on everyday life, nevertheless, a
large impact on it. To begin, with the introduction of digital information, communication through
digital or "online" means has been created as well. This in turn changes the way humans interact and
communicate with each other. With this new technology, humans can now quickly and efficiently
communicate amongst themselves in a way that was not possible before. An estimate of
2,405,518,376 people use the internet1 (which is approximately double the population of India at the
time) 15 with 70% of them using it daily as of 2013.1 This number has only been increasing over
time. I.M.S (instant messaging system), social media, amongst other forms of digital information
allows people to communicate quickly and in real time. Society has come to the point where people

Stereotypes In Popular Culture
Popular culture is more visible in our modern day society than ever before. Stereotypes (both good
and bad) are being thrown around unfairly by those who aren't even educated about the topic.
Ironically, our society continues to listen to these uneducated individuals and as a result, these
individuals are having a large impact in the way society looks at certain topics. Let's not discard the
simple fact that we too are guilty of throwing these unfair criticisms and stereotypes at individuals
whom we disagree with. It is human nature to make assumptions about a person by the way they
dress, talk, who they hang out with, and their characteristics. Popular culture has swept all over the

The more we see these stereotypes on the media and in certain films and songs, the more our brains
begin to think that they are real. Popular culture is what gives us a perception of our world and how
we view specific topics. Technology has been a catalyst for the growth of popular culture in the
world today. As humans, we tend to believe that everything our role models say is true and that
everything we read online is written by wise individuals. However, most of these people who
generalize people or topics often are making unfair assumptions and aren't even educated about the
topic. Popular culture changes our perspective on certain world matters and has a huge impact on
our everyday lives. This idea has been in our lives since we were infants and will continue to expand
along with the growth of technological innovations and our belief that everything we hear is true.

popular culture clearly plays a massive role in the world around

Impact of Film and Television: 1950's to Present
Today, Film and Television are among the most internationally supported commodities. Financially,
their contributions are enormous: both industries are responsible for the circulation of billions of
dollars each year. Since their respective explosions into the new media markets during the mid–
twentieth century, film and television have produced consistently growing numbers of viewers and
critics alike. Sparking debate over the nature of their viewing, film and television are now being
questioned in social, political, and moral arenas for their potential impact on an audience. Critics
claim that watching films or television is a passive activity in which the viewer becomes

Greater emotional and intellectual responses surface as foreign issues become "closer to home" from
an instant access to news. As the public receives such unbiased information, it can make more
informed decisions, and has a better chance to affect change. (At this time, television and film are
the most powerful catalysts for social change.) Thus it can be argued that film and television
productions help to create positive social changes, promote multiculturalism and diversity, and
create a common cultural identity among viewers.
Unfortunately, this utopian argument doesn't account for the countless studies correlating film and
television viewing to perpetuated hate and stereotyping, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Declining
SAT scores and library check–outs over the decades have lead critics to believe that film and
television are aiding in the international "dumbification" effort, in which individuals are losing the
ability to think without direction. This phenomenon is closely related to the more recent "couch
potato syndrome", in which laziness, lack of physical fitness and a passive attitude combine,
producing the ultimate unhealthy lifestyle that is currently sweeping the majority of modern
America. More important, however, are the two great faults of film and television. First, film and
television establish false

Stereotyping, Discrimination and Prejudice in the Media
The movie that I have chosen to watch for this particular bonus assignment is called "The Freedom

students in her English class, who come from different ethnics backgrounds and who most hate each
other, get along. And, of course, by the end of the movie, she is successful in doing so.
Racism played a major role in this movie, seen as a negative aspect in the children's attitudes and
mentalities. Racism is defined as negative behaviour on an incorrect assumption that one race is
inherently superior to others. This is one of the many forms of discrimination which is defined as
unfair actions directed against people based on their race, gender, ... Show more content on

When the teacher asked the class who knew what the Holocaust was, only one white person out of
the entire body of students knew. That is when she realized that the students had very little
knowledge about the outside world. This greatly related to Gordon W. Allport's theory. Allport was a
psychologist who used questionnaires and interviews to measure the strength of individual
prejudice, and who found a correlation between higher education and experiences such as
knowledge about cultures, traveling, etc, and "tolerance" or the acceptance of differences between
people. In this case, because the students were not taught and were unaware that there were similar
cases to theirs, only on a greater scale, they continued to prejudge, and discriminate against each
other. Later on in the movie though, because they begin to travel more and gain more knowledge
about the outside world, they become more aware and realize that they should change. In addition,
three other theorists' ideas play a role in the movie. The first one is Frances Aboud, who believes
that children first learn prejudice from the media, family, friends, etc, when they are bombarded

she sees people. Since she was a little girl, her father used to tell her that she had to fight for their

The Importance Of Stereotyping In The Mass Media
Diversity means variety and when it comes to the mass media, the word seems to be un–
understandable. The media may be one of the places that lack the most diversity and with that comes
stereotypes. Stereotypes are oversimplified views on a group of people with common characteristics.
Stereotyping is an action long practiced in society to the point where it has become part of human
nature. Stereotyping almost always comes with its negative connotations including, but not limited
to; being blatantly incorrect, being emotionally scarring, and being the source of many prejudices
and racism. The media, because of how it portrays people and events, can be attributed to spreading
most of the stereotypes seen today. And due to it being a major platform, it spreads stereotypes fast.
This is especially true for minorities; negative stereotypes of minorities are reinforced because of
how the media portrays, underrepresents and stigmatizes them. During an episode of $25,000
Pyramid in 1968 (a game show where two pairs of contestants compete and a series of words appear
on a screen in front of one contestant, who gives clues to try to get the partner to identify the correct
word), the word gangs' came up on the cluer's screen (Cort). And the first thing the cluer shouted out
was "They have lots of these in East L.A." (referring to the heavy Mexican–American population
there), responding directly after, their partner guessed it right (Cort). This situation is an example of

Consequences Of Racial, Ethnic, And Gender Stereotyping In...
Explain and discuss the presence and consequences of racial, ethnic, and gender stereotyping in the
mass media. The Subtle Influence of Mass Media
The desire to belong in society is so strong, that many problems arise out of it's pursuit. In groups
are created in order to create feelings of unity and to allow for a collective identity. However, with
the development of these in groups, come outgroups, which are, "groups toward which one feels
antagonism and contempt"(Giddens). Perpetuated by mass media, this way of thinking paves a path
of discrimination, specifically targeting gender and racial differences. Often, the first things that
comes to mind of gender stereotyping in media are the unrealistic body images women face. From
the tall and unrealistically skinny models, to even a burger ad that uses topless models, women are
bombarded with the expectations of these unobtainable yet perfect bodies by societies standards.
However, this is not where the problem all begins. One journalist describes her frustration, saying,
"My search for American advertisements with girls playing with action figures and boys using easy
bake ovens was fruitless"(Lantange). At a very young age, children are taught what their roles are
through even the most subtle of media. By gender stereotyping the young children in the
advertisements, young americans are being conditioned that the women will play with the easy bake
oven, a toy that hints at future domestic chores, and the boys will play with plastic tool belts and
action figures. Another example of stereotyping in the media that often goes unnoticed is the roles
given to women in film and television. In the polarized comic strip "The Rule", it is pointed out that
a movie often fails to reach three requirements. These requirements, now referred to as the Bechdel
test, state that in order to pass a movie must have at least two women, who must talk to each other,
and they must talk about something other than a man (Bechdel). Sadly, very few movies pass this
test. The consequences of this are an audience that either does not view actresses as equally talented
to their male counterparts, or, that they are only useful for romantic interest to the plot. These

Gender Stereotyping Of Sports Media
Gender stereotyping in sports media is something we see everyday in magazines and on TV. Since
sports were invented, males have dominated one of Canada's largest pastimes. Reasons for this
being physicality and strength, but as time progressed women began to become more involved in the
culture of sport. Today there is almost an equal amount of women participating in sports as man, yet
women are still not being represented with the same approach as men. About a month ago I found a
video online that followed a sports reporter who was trying to make a point about gender
stereotyping within sports media. He would interview professional male athletes but rather than ask
them the typical interview questions we see in male sports, such as "has your workout routine
changed since..." but rather asked them questions that are typically related to female athlete
interviews such as one that was asked to swimmer Michael Phelps "Shaving your body hair gives
you an edge in the pool, but how about your love life", or "any comments about reports about your
girlish figure". At the end of the video they show real women athletes being asked these types of
questions in real interviews. The men's reactions of embarrassment to disgust vs. the women's
reactions of showing no surprise to being asked these derogatory questions, says it all. It is no
surprise that the sexualization of female athletes is something all too common in sports media. We'll
be looking into the idea of sexualisation in

The Construction Of Gender Stereotyping Of Women In The Media
This Concept Called Beauty...
The construction of gender stereotyping of females in the media is based on outdated and unfounded
beliefs. Therefore it has had, and continues to have, a detrimental impact on our society.
Looks don't matter, beauty is only skin–deep. We hear these every day, and yet we live in a society
that seems to contradict this very idea. If looks don't matter, why does the media use airbrushing to
hide any flaws a person has? If looks don't matter, why are so many young women harming

If Barbie was real, her body fat percentage would be so low that she would not be able to

The Importance Of Stereotyping In The Media
A trophy is an object that is built to show off to others as a sign of victory and greatness. The media
utilizes their resources to portray people who fulfill the "trophy" view meaning that they are
"skinny", "tall", and majority of time "white". This idea has been converted into stereotyping
through the constant comparison between a person's type that is not portrayed on media and a
person who is.The word stereotype has a negative connotation due to the ongoing societal issues
taken place. Stereotyping evokes a judgemental factor based on one perspective. The idea that a
person is judged solely on the account of another individual's actions because they are the same race
or they dress similarly. Simply, people don't take into consideration of the other perspective of an
individual and believe solely on a stereotype therefore hindering them to make a non–bias
judgement. My intentions are to determine the underlying reasons why media has portrayed people
as a certain way and why society strives to be like those in the media.
A person can easily judge based off a stereotype because it is a common practice in society, with the
help of public media and social outlets that allow people to have a certain perspective on someone
they don't know internally but externally. The unethical aspect is that the world's view on certain
groups of people share similar ideas that are portrayed but they don't wish to seek justification on
their assumption. According to Chimimanda Adichie,

During every second of our lives, an unjustified act of violence is being portrayed on television.

in fact these cartoons and movies could be actually shaping young males into believing violence is

are targeted toward our young adult males that are morphing their attitudes to a violent and more
masculine level. Many people believe that males are naturally aggressive toward each other and that
violence has always been a large part of the male's life. I believe that this is not true at all because
there are many facts to support that the rise in violence among young males is relatively caused by
the media and that we are just starting to see the effects with a whole new generation behind it.
Everyday, another act of violence is generated by a young adult male through the act of defiance.
Highly publicized acts of violence by young males have opened the eyes of the country as people

The Influence Of Gender Stereotyping In The Media
Gender stereotyping is a bias act where gender roles are generalized and unfortunately this act is
widely portrayed in the media and is influencing children's from a very young age. Men and women
have bias roles in the media, women are caring, nurturing, loving .while the men are tough,
unemotional, the polar opposite of the women. In children's shows, the girl's characters are always
dressed in pink, playing with dolls, emotional and feminine, while boys wear blue, not emotional
and does not play with dolls. Their gender stereotyping characters play a huge role in the views,
especially the children, as they too will start to stereotype in real life. One of the biggest drawbacks
is that children's becomes so influenced by gender stereotypes, which results in them being fully
conditioned into their roles and to them that is the custom. And if by chance they notice that a child
is not behaving that way then they will immediately point that out and worse they will bully them
into conforming to the gender stereotype. One influencing factor in defining and redefining gender
and gender role stereotypes among individuals is the influence from media. Since cultural
interpretations are a defining factor in the way society wants a woman to behave as opposed to how
a man should behave (Krahn, K.2015). The show Austin and Alley does an excellent job of
portraying gender stereotyping, observing the physical appearances Austin (male) is dressed very
casually and he in most cases dressed

media remains the vessel in which the world stays connected. Humans are the creators of media and
with that comes their natural biases and opinions. One bias that really showcases itself is the current
one against mental illnesses. During a 2010 study, newspaper articles were collected from various

Stigmas have the same basic start as a stereotype, a couple of cases becomes the generalization for
an entire group or status. Stigmas go one step further and become a paradigm that the general public
may live under. As Dockery expressed when he stated stigmas "...can be considered a multifaceted
concept involving: labelling; negative stereotyping; separation of 'them' from 'us'; status loss and
discrimination, leading to multiple inequalities" (Dockery et al pg. 613). Add the diagnosed people
and the non–diagnosed to the stigma equation and a cyclic nature reveals itself. For the purpose of
relating this to what has been said, the beginning of the stigmatization process will be the media.
The media portrays the diagnosed as deranged murderers because "...mental illness have been
shown to strongly attract readers' attention..." (Vahabzadeh et al pg. 440). This projection of the
diagnosed translates to a limited amount of information that the public has on the illness. In order to
fill in the void, the public takes the information that it has, the negative portrayals, and accepts them.
This then becomes the stigma on Schizophrenia. That negative status is now placed on the
diagnosed. The diagnosed then lose some of the credibility and begin to have more inequalities. The
people who experience said inequalities are now matching the description of what the stigma says.

known what to do with black characters. It has struggled, as has the country, to find a place for them
that white Americans could find comforting and digestible from the safe distance of their living
rooms. Reality had nothing to do with it." The media has portrayed black characters as nothing more
than, buffoons, hustlers, pimps, and prostitutes.
Throughout the twentieth century, African Americans were stereotyped as dirty and contaminated.
Though it is easy to imagine that lower income individuals may not have had money for cleaning
supplies and might have been less concerned about cleanliness, those stereotypes was never true
about African Americans. Thanks to this stereotype it then festered to justify laws segregating Black
and White Americans under the false notion of cleanliness and disease prevention. Segregation
statutes prevented Blacks and Whites from utilizing the same restrooms, drinking fountains, and
swimming facilities under the assumption that Whites would be contaminated by shared use. Back
in the day, Jim Crow was "just common sense." The medical establishment agreed, proclaiming that
African Americans were carriers of disease, "a social menace whose collective superstitions,
ignorance, and carefree demeanor stood as a stubborn affront to modern notions of hygiene."

Consumer advertising propels an unviable ideal of the feminine figure. The vast majority of
advertising uses a feminine form whose key features (e.g. thinness, particular figure, unblemished

expectations on the part of women and of society at large. The depiction of females in advertising is
also highly stylized and this can significantly distort its viewers ' connection between what they see
in the advertisement and what women actually experience and accomplish in reality. Advertising
negatively objectifies women. Much advertising involving female models is semi–pornographic. It
conforms to a misogynist assessment that women are commodifiable sexual objects that are both
disposable and transposable. Most advertising also uses models with a fairly homogenous set of
physical characteristics and styles them so that they are often interchangeable which alludes to the
idea that all women are the same while using a subject with realistically unattainable attributes. This
approach gives emphasis to the idea of women as essentially compliant, commodifiable items. Some

It has managed to gain a significant influence in daily life as it pervades perceptions of the world
through broadcasting messages that impact belief systems and values. The media has constantly
reinforced information about how we should look and act in our culture. According to Milkie
(1999), respondents of a study regarding social comparisons in mass media often told how they
learned and evaluated themselves based on other's individuals experiences discussed in media
(Milkie, 1999, p. 200). Social comparisons ultimately affect how individuals learn and view
themselves in relation to other individuals or cultures and can influence the development of one's

internalize the messages and may engage in self–fulfilling prophecies. Negative portrayals of ethnic

Social Media And Its Impact On Society
I have constantly thought about intimacy amongst couples as a private and a special thing between
them, and considered it as a cherished moment to be experienced concerning the two without the
interruptions of others. Yet, nowadays, every notion of privacy is becoming blurred with the use of
technology, and peoples' interpretations of what is private and what is public has evolved over time
with these new technological developments. The smartphone plays a significant role in changing
peoples' views on their privacy, and having these devices in hand at all times, with unlimited access
to the internet, alongside countless applications and free social media platforms available to share
their content has made it even easier to forget about the concept of privacy.
People share their daily activities and encounters on social media platforms like Facebook,

The Impact Of The Sexualisation And Objectification Of Women
Introduction
Modern–day society has now been dominated by the media. Almost all of us are affected by media
in one way or another. In today's world, it is undeniable of the huge role that media plays in our
everyday life, both positively and negatively. Our perception of body image, our physical
appearance and our identity, have been shaped and sculpted by what is presented in the media.
While media has brought about many benefits, giving us the ability to communicate and interact
easily, breaking down cultural and social barriers, it has also restricted ourselves from independent
thinking and self–control, leaving us gullible to believing that the exaggerated images and news we
see are the truth and what is 'meant to be', when in fact, they are not.
The audience for media is wide and varied, however, it is arguable that adolescents and teenagers
are the most easily affected. Growing up in an environment where sexualisation and objectification
is a norm, the extent to which the younger generation will be affected by these ads is unknown.
This essay investigates the impacts in which the way body image is presented in the media and its

Media Stereotyping Of Black Men In The Media
The researcher began by asking the question what factors contribute to the stereotyping of black
men as "dangerous and criminal". And the researcher found out that although media influence
stereotyping of this sort, it's only smaller part of the larger problem. There is a general tendency in
the media to over–represent African–American as criminal; portray black men as particularly
dangerous, and present information about black suspect that assume their guilt. However, even when
crime featuring black and white criminal suspects is presented in equitable ways in the media,
viewers' existing stereotypes can result in biased interpretations that may serve to maintain racial
stereotypes nevertheless. The researcher conclude that, viewers' selective perception and
interpretation of media content suggest that equitable media portrayals of race in crime–related
programming may not be sufficient to address the concerns presented here.
Reason for choosing the Article.
From the media I consume on daily I personally believe that the overrepresentation or
misrepresentation as well as negative portrayal of black suspects/ criminals in the media cause the

larger problem. The problem is deeper than just negative media portrayal of black men.

In the beginning, the stereotypes developed were seen as acceptable because they 'represented'
Indians. As we move through time, they have become over exaggerated and unacceptable. The
stereotypes have been pushed to an unbelievable limit and they stopped coming off as funny to
Indians. Since these stereotypes were created, the Indian community has outgrown them and no
longer sees them as accurate representation. Pari Mathur explains in his article titles "Who I Was

idea of Indians makes it difficult for society to look at Indians and not see "just a dude who bobbles
his head with a mustache, because that's what they've seen on TV" (Mathur, 2013). After speaking

to begin breaking down the stereotypes. The breakdown of stereotypes has begun in more recent

As economies of Third World country continue to deteriorate more and more people will come to America. Everybody wants what America has but because of the agendas of Third World country politicians and the corruption of governments and the war over illegal criminal activities the safe haven of America will still be the priority of people around the world. The demographics of the United States we will continue to move to a change in diversity from a white majority to really know majority at all. The Hispanic population continues to grow in America while the white population continues to decline. The African–American population has already moved from the largest minority to the second largest minority be replaced by the Hispanic minority. If this trend continues by 2050 we can see the Hispanic population become the majority of the largest minority and other people who have not had to fight for civil rights may now find themselves as a beneficiary of those civil rights battles fought by other minorities. What challenges does the United States face due to the diversity of its people? The first issue that comes to mind is language. If the Hispanic population becomes a majority will we see a change in the language that is not only taught but spoken in America. • 3. The Aspects Of Gender Stereotyping In The Media Gender stereotyping in media has existed since the beginning of media itself. From newspaper ads to billboards to movies, men and women have been put in certain molds that have proven consistent over time. Gender stereotyping, however, is no longer relevant in today's society. In the 1950s, making women gentle mothers or secretaries and men strong builders or businessmen may have sold, but it is becoming more and more common for these stereotypes to be less than sufficient. In media, stereotypes are becoming more subtle, but are still there; it is not surprising that a war has been waged against these stereotypes and any perpetuators who seem insistent upon keeping them. Gender stereotypes are outdated and not relevant to today's society. The fight for female stereotypes to be eradicated is strong and unyielding. This fight is met with copious amounts of backlash, with people complaining that stereotypes are not a real concern in modern America. However, American media has proven to be obsessed with placing women in a certain mold. It is certainly no secret that women in movies and television shows are not always portrayed to their full potential. An awesome female character who has the potential to be an amazing role model is often reduced to a beautiful face, rather than a key character or problem solver. The character Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin could be an example of this. She is portrayed as strong and wanting to be independent, but throughout the entire movie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is not to say that all information conveyed by the media is heterogeneous, as unreasonable talk is additionally present. Be that as it may, the pervasive dispersal of prevailing philosophies holds on as a worry among minority populations, as their voices are regularly oppressed and disregarded inside standard media. Social movements, which can be approximately characterized as cognizant aggregate endeavors to change some parts of the social request, are hard to depict with accuracy. Major social movements contain inside themselves numerous subgroupings which may contrast in vital ways. The women 's movement, for instance, incorporates liberal, radical and Marxist women 's activists, ecofeminists, lesbian separatists and the individuals who view lesbianism as one way of life among others; in spite of the fact that these groupings debate about various issues, they do concede to the fundamental need to enhance the circumstance of women. The women 's movement has been working for social equity for women along a wide range of fronts, including legislative issues, culture, the mass media, law, instruction, wellbeing, the work power, religion, nature and home. • 7. Essay on Feminists, Stereotypes and Stereotyping in the... Feminists and Media Stereotypes The media portrays feminists in unflattering ways. Largely because of the media portrayal, the word 'feminist' usually evokes images of crass, butch, men–hating, very masculine women. Many women believe in the feminist doctrine, but they would never consider themselves as a feminist because they cannot relate to the images of crass, butch, men–hating, masculine women. In fact, it has only been within the past year that I've been able to accept the fact that I am a feminist and that my preconceived images of feminists are merely media stereotypes. I'm now able to admit I care more about my own rights than whether or not someone will assume I fit the media stereotype of a feminsit. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to (author, Peter) Gay, "Feminists were denigrated as failed women, half–men, hens that crow... humor magazines and hostile legislators everywhere broadcast a frightening picture of appalling masculine harridans haranguing the House of Commons."(Wolf, 68) * Who would want to be associated with such a group? Who would want others to think less of them because they're involved with a group of "ugly" "small–breasted" "repulsive" women? Over time, the number of women willing to stand–up to the stereotype and count themselves as feminists has grown, but this offensive myth still keeps some women away. People simply do not want to be associated with a group that has such stereotypes. Some women today are willing to call themselves "feminists", stereotypes be damned. Yet many others need to show that they are still feminine despite the fact that they are feminists. There are feminine feminist web rings on the web. • 11. Essay on Stereotyping in the Media The world today has become quite a diverse place. People of any color, race, or ethnicity, can go to the same school, restaurant, bathroom, and even date one another. The world is constantly changing and learning from its diverse inhabitants, so why hasn't¬¬¬¬ the media been up to speed with the rest of the world? Race has increasingly become this social concept that the media has embraced and ran with. Inspiring millions, the media constantly transforms assumptions about particular groups of people into "realities." (Media Stereotyping) The Media often inadequately represents minorities in television shows or movies, which most of the time are demeaning to that particular race or ethnicity. This inferiority put on the shoulders of colored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... African Americans, Mexican, Chinese, ect. are not the only people who do drugs or commit crimes. The reason for their poverty is due to lack of jobs. Lack of jobs is to all the people out in the world who look at them with their mind already made up, judge them before they even meet them. The lies concocted by this social concept have lead to the inferiority African Americans and minorities face every day. • 13. The Causes Of Stereotyping In The Rise Of The Media In today world, with the rise of the media, some people said media are controlling people's options, idea and attitude. It can be seen that stereotyping appear in everywhere, it plays a vital role in our social life, it determines the attitude to the idea of the public. A stereotype is "a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people." (Cardwell, 1999). According to McGarty, Spears and Yzerbyt (2002), stereotypes help to explain, save time and share the common belief. By stereotyping, it could be creating a medium which is understandable, acceptable and universal. Stereotype connotes something that may be untrue, is ethically and morally problematic, and should be overcome (Devine, 1989). By stereotyping, the public can only see a very general view of certain types of people or object, the viewpoint may just base on one of the same types of individual, it is a preconceived notion as it does not mean that every person who belongs to the same genre possesses such qualities. Stereotype allows us to ignore individual differences, it might easy to make a misunderstanding on it (Rae and Piggott, 2014). The cause of stereotypes is because the individual does not have enough time to understand the object, so that to use a formula to estimate the object, for example, a tattooed man wearing black sunglasses smoking on the street would be considered a gangster. "Negative stereotypes seem far more common." (Rae and Piggott, 2014). "'The medium is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Muslims are being affected on how people see them as a threat especially those who are unaware of the certain issues . • 17. Dual Perspective Analysis 1. Something I learned in this course is that I always seem to find myself in dual perspective. I actually did not know there was even a word for this, because as the textbook stated is appears to be innate in humans. However, I have encountered others who think with a closed mind or egocentrically and I find it to be very damaging to their interpersonal relationships, and a drag of someone to talk to. When I engage in dual perspective I am learning from my point of view, but also from someone else's point of view. They too are showing me how and why to understand something in a different light. 2. I noticed that I use an identity script when I talk too! I had thought about this concept prior, but I had not viewed it as an identity script. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When using generalizations in discussion with one another I do believe it gives us both many opportunities and many limitations. One opportunity is that we can use generalizations in conversation with the generalized other and with the particular other. When communicating with the particular other I find myself questioning generalizations much more often because I care and it is my job as a loved one to make sure I am communicating effectively, and that is hard to do using generalizations. However, at the same time we can have a subjective or unclear conversation and still fill fulfilled from the conversation in some aspect because we got to interact with one another. When communicating with the generalized other, we can use generalizations just to start or keep the conversation going. Another benefit to generalizations is that you can find almost anybody to talk to, given you know them somewhat, and form a better relationship through conversation. This may be stereotyping, but I feel as if that is how we identify who we may become interested in or become friends with. However, generalizations do have their limitations. When we generalize someone else's communication we are not getting the full story and that can lead to misunderstandings in future conversations and even misunderstandings of who they are. Moreover, our culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class and so forth determine much of whom we are and what our thought process and communication style is like. So when we are talking to someone of a different background we may be using these instant generalizations, but shouldn't because this is an opportunity to learn from and understand one another. Generalizations assume that we all think and communicate the same way and that is very much false and the less we generalize the more we learn about the world around ... Therefore, since it is almost impossible to avoid media, companies use this to their advantage to send out messages or advertise their products through the media. In addition to advertising through media, businesses send out subliminal messages with symbolic interactionism. Symbolic interactionism is a sociological perspective that is influential in many areas of the sociological discipline, meaning that symbols are used to promote a certain action from someone, but in this case I am referring to companies promoting consumer participation through magazines and television shows. Magazine reading has gone down in the past decade, but it is still a great way to advertise. While watching an episode of the show, there is a sweepstakes called "Dead Sweepstakes" which incorporates giving out two code words during both commercial breaks that leads to prizes. • 21. Body Stereotyping Within The Media Mark LoPuzzo English 101 Mrs. Ball Senior Research Paper Body Stereotyping within the Media "Of course you could stand to lose a few pounds." This was said by an individual struggling with bulimia. The public is presented with thin, tall, muscular, and perfectly fit people in the media such as magazines or television shows, making people with a more natural body image feel insecure and unpleased with their body type. The media is promoting body stereotypes and it is negatively affecting the public. The media displays the "average man" as being hairless and very well built which may negatively affect the male population. Body stereotyping in the media can lead to body dysmorphia. Body dysmorphia is common among the younger generation because they are more adept at using social media. The media displays the "average man" as being hairless and very well built which may negatively affect the male population. The public blames the media and celebrities for supporting the idea of the "ideal" body type. Both men and women want slim, fit bodies. But the media has turned both genders against each other making it a competition, which is negatively affecting the public ("Body image concerns more men than women, research finds"). Stereotyping has the same concept of racism, but the person stereotyping is not harsh or vocal. The person that is stereotyping a group of people has a fixed image of how that group will act. Stereotyping is very common in today's society. As more and more people gain easier access to communicate via social media this problem has been growing. This may have been true sixty years ago, but a lot of women support their families in 2015. The media oppresses women by keeping them locked up in their old traditional roles. When women try to speak out against this outrageousness they get ridiculed by powerful men on social media. Huffington Post wrote an article on gender stereotypes stating, "This reticence of women in Social Media is largely a result of the unfavorable, and even often abusive, responses they get purely on the basis of their gender" (Ramasubbu). Thus it can be argued that film and television productions help to create positive social changes, promote multiculturalism and diversity, and create a common cultural identity among viewers. Unfortunately, this utopian argument doesn't account for the countless studies correlating film and television viewing to perpetuated hate and stereotyping, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Declining SAT scores and library check–outs over the decades have lead critics to believe that film and television are aiding in the international "dumbification" effort, in which individuals are losing the ability to think without direction. The movie is about a new teacher and the challenges that she faces in order to make the students in her English class, who come from different ethnics backgrounds and who most hate each other, get along. And, of course, by the end of the movie, she is successful in doing so. Racism played a major role in this movie, seen as a negative aspect in the children's attitudes and mentalities. When the teacher asked the class who knew what the Holocaust was, only one white person out of the entire body of students knew. That is when she realized that the students had very little knowledge about the outside world. This greatly related to Gordon W. Allport's theory. Allport was a psychologist who used questionnaires and interviews to measure the strength of individual prejudice, and who found a correlation between higher education and experiences such as knowledge about cultures, traveling, etc, and "tolerance" or the acceptance of differences between people. In this case, because the students were not taught and were unaware that there were similar cases to theirs, only on a greater scale, they continued to prejudge, and discriminate against each other. Later on in the movie though, because they begin to travel more and gain more knowledge about the outside world, they become more aware and realize that they should change. In addition, three other theorists' ideas play a role in the movie. The first one is Frances Aboud, who believes that children first learn prejudice from the media, family, friends, etc, when they are bombarded with negative images. • 33. The Importance Of Stereotyping In The Mass Media Diversity means variety and when it comes to the mass media, the word seems to be un– understandable. The media may be one of the places that lack the most diversity and with that comes stereotypes. Stereotypes are oversimplified views on a group of people with common characteristics. Stereotyping is an action long practiced in society to the point where it has become part of human nature. Stereotyping almost always comes with its negative connotations including, but not limited to; being blatantly incorrect, being emotionally scarring, and being the source of many prejudices and racism. The media, because of how it portrays people and events, can be attributed to spreading most of the stereotypes seen today. And due to it being a major platform, it spreads stereotypes fast. This is especially true for minorities; negative stereotypes of minorities are reinforced because of how the media portrays, underrepresents and stigmatizes them. During an episode of $25,000 Pyramid in 1968 (a game show where two pairs of contestants compete and a series of words appear on a screen in front of one contestant, who gives clues to try to get the partner to identify the correct word), the word gangs' came up on the cluer's screen (Cort). • 35. Consequences Of Racial, Ethnic, And Gender Stereotyping In... Explain and discuss the presence and consequences of racial, ethnic, and gender stereotyping in the mass media. The Subtle Influence of Mass Media The desire to belong in society is so strong, that many problems arise out of it's pursuit. In groups are created in order to create feelings of unity and to allow for a collective identity. However, with the development of these in groups, come outgroups, which are, "groups toward which one feels antagonism and contempt"(Giddens). Perpetuated by mass media, this way of thinking paves a path of discrimination, specifically targeting gender and racial differences. Often, the first things that comes to mind of gender stereotyping in media are the unrealistic body images women face. From the tall and unrealistically skinny models, to even a burger ad that uses topless models, women are bombarded with the expectations of these unobtainable yet perfect bodies by societies standards. However, this is not where the problem all begins. One journalist describes her frustration, saying, "My search for American advertisements with girls playing with action figures and boys using easy bake ovens was fruitless"(Lantange). At a very young age, children are taught what their roles are through even the most subtle of media. By gender stereotyping the young children in the advertisements, young americans are being conditioned that the women will play with the easy bake oven, a toy that hints at future domestic chores, and the boys will play with plastic tool belts and action figures. Another example of stereotyping in the media that often goes unnoticed is the roles given to women in film and television. In the polarized comic strip "The Rule", it is pointed out that a movie often fails to reach three requirements. These requirements, now referred to as the Bechdel test, state that in order to pass a movie must have at least two women, who must talk to each other, and they must talk about something other than a man (Bechdel). Sadly, very few movies pass this test. The consequences of this are an audience that either does not view actresses as equally talented to their male counterparts, or, that they are only useful for romantic interest to the plot. Since sports were invented, males have dominated one of Canada's largest pastimes. Reasons for this being physicality and strength, but as time progressed women began to become more involved in the culture of sport. Today there is almost an equal amount of women participating in sports as man, yet women are still not being represented with the same approach as men. About a month ago I found a video online that followed a sports reporter who was trying to make a point about gender stereotyping within sports media. He would interview professional male athletes but rather than ask them the typical interview questions we see in male sports, such as "has your workout routine changed since..." but rather asked them questions that are typically related to female athlete interviews such as one that was asked to swimmer Michael Phelps "Shaving your body hair gives you an edge in the pool, but how about your love life", or "any comments about reports about your girlish figure". At the end of the video they show real women athletes being asked these types of questions in real interviews. The men's reactions of embarrassment to disgust vs. the women's reactions of showing no surprise to being asked these derogatory questions, says it all. It is no surprise that the sexualization of female athletes is something all too common in sports media. We'll be looking into the idea of sexualisation in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This idea has been converted into stereotyping through the constant comparison between a person's type that is not portrayed on media and a person who is.The word stereotype has a negative connotation due to the ongoing societal issues taken place. Stereotyping evokes a judgemental factor based on one perspective. The idea that a person is judged solely on the account of another individual's actions because they are the same race or they dress similarly. Simply, people don't take into consideration of the other perspective of an individual and believe solely on a stereotype therefore hindering them to make a non–bias judgement. My intentions are to determine the underlying reasons why media has portrayed people as a certain way and why society strives to be like those in the media. A person can easily judge based off a stereotype because it is a common practice in society, with the help of public media and social outlets that allow people to have a certain perspective on someone they don't know internally but externally. • 47. The Influence Of Gender Stereotyping In The Media Gender stereotyping is a bias act where gender roles are generalized and unfortunately this act is widely portrayed in the media and is influencing children's from a very young age. Men and women have bias roles in the media, women are caring, nurturing, loving .while the men are tough, unemotional, the polar opposite of the women. In children's shows, the girl's characters are always dressed in pink, playing with dolls, emotional and feminine, while boys wear blue, not emotional and does not play with dolls. Their gender stereotyping characters play a huge role in the views, especially the children, as they too will start to stereotype in real life. One of the biggest drawbacks is that children's becomes so influenced by gender stereotypes, which results in them being fully conditioned into their roles and to them that is the custom. And if by chance they notice that a child is not behaving that way then they will immediately point that out and worse they will bully them into conforming to the gender stereotype. One influencing factor in defining and redefining gender and gender role stereotypes among individuals is the influence from media. Since cultural interpretations are a defining factor in the way society wants a woman to behave as opposed to how a man should behave (Krahn, K.2015). Reality had nothing to do with it." The media has portrayed black characters as nothing more than, buffoons, hustlers, pimps, and prostitutes. Throughout the twentieth century, African Americans were stereotyped as dirty and contaminated. Though it is easy to imagine that lower income individuals may not have had money for cleaning supplies and might have been less concerned about cleanliness, those stereotypes was never true about African Americans. Thanks to this stereotype it then festered to justify laws segregating Black and White Americans under the false notion of cleanliness and disease prevention. Segregation statutes prevented Blacks and Whites from utilizing the same restrooms, drinking fountains, and swimming facilities under the assumption that Whites would be contaminated by shared use. • 59. Stereotypes Of Minorities In Media With the emergence of advanced technology and social media, the media has become a dominant influential source in American civilization today. One can easily observe how the media has managed to shape the way society thinks, feels, and acts towards certain situations. The media can be a positive resource that not only provides educational and important content to its viewers, but also serves as a useful mechanism to bring people together. However, it is easy for people to obtain wrong interpretations about the world because the media isn't always based on objective reality. The media readily provides continuous streams of racial stereotyping in its content. As a result, false representations about other cultures and ethnicities are reinforced, ... It has managed to gain a significant influence in daily life as it pervades perceptions of the world through broadcasting messages that impact belief systems and values. The media has constantly reinforced information about how we should look and act in our culture. According to Milkie (1999), respondents of a study regarding social comparisons in mass media often told how they learned and evaluated themselves based on other's individuals experiences discussed in media (Milkie, 1999, p. 200). Social comparisons ultimately affect how individuals learn and view themselves in relation to other individuals or cultures and can influence the development of one's self concept. As constant negative representations of out–groups are reinforced, minorities internalize the messages and may engage in self–fulfilling prophecies. Negative portrayals of ethnic groups may reverse cultural pride and produce a poor self–image. The media has a history of impact the self–images of individuals through propagating messages of society's expectations and values. The mass media has not only been proven to influence people's perceptions of their external appearances, but also directly affects how individuals internally view themselves. Allen (2001), for example, observed the detrimental affects of mass media on self–consciousness and self–esteem of African Americans. • 61. Do The Right Thing: The Epidemic of Racial Stereotyping in... DO THE RIGHT THING; Spike Lee Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood. The story represents festering racial strains between a group of African–Americans and the middle–aged, Italian– American patriarch of a local pizzeria call the "Sal's Famous Pizzeria." As the scorching hot summer day is about to end, a fight blows up between local colored youths led by "Radio" Raheem and Sal. Pushed to the edge by Raheem's radio flares, Sal explodes into a venomous rage sated with racial tirade, which closes with his crushing of Raheem's stereo system. Consequently, a fight erupts and numerous other associates get involved in the whole fiasco. In the middle of escalating riot in the vicinity, Raheem is killed by the NYPD, who choke him with a baton in a scene that is dissonantly redolent of a lynching. The police officers finally run away from the scene with Raheem's body in haul, leaving the community behind to mourn and condemn the unfairness of this murder by the NYPD and the numerous others that were killed in a similar fashion before Radio Raheem. In an act of rebelliousness, Mookie, the pizzeria's only black employee, throws a trash can through the pizzeria window, leading to the sweltering demolition of Sal's bread and butter. Almost two decades ago, during the same sunny month of June, director Spike Lee identified a pattern in how white critics were talking about the move, he noticed that White critics never discussed or spoke about Radio Raheem's death by the NYPD but how Mookie ... • 63. Social Media And Its Impact On Society I have constantly thought about intimacy amongst couples as a private and a special thing between them, and considered it as a cherished moment to be experienced concerning the two without the interruptions of others. Yet, nowadays, every notion of privacy is becoming blurred with the use of technology, and peoples' interpretations of what is private and what is public has evolved over time with these new technological developments. The smartphone plays a significant role in changing peoples' views on their privacy, and having these devices in hand at all times, with unlimited access to the internet, alongside countless applications and free social media platforms available to share their content has made it even easier to forget about the concept of privacy. People share their daily activities and encounters on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat with many other. Some share it with close family, relative and friends, however, others share them with complete strangers that they have never met in person in their whole lives. The content they share could be about any event in their lives, an outing with a few friends, a family gathering, or an intimate time spent with loved ones. Intimacy between couples is no longer considered as a private instant, but as an exposed moment that is being shared and mediated. The idea of intimacy, with social media platforms, have lost its sense of being an intimate moment practiced between two people, yet, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Millennials are being harmed by Mass Media by being portrayed negatively and getting a negative stigma associated with their name. These issues are affecting the employment for Millennials and even turning Millennials into a scapegoat for numerous problems in society. Currently, Mass media is portraying Millennials through TV negatively by creating character stereotypes that main characteristics include being lazy and not being that bright. While the stereotyping might sound harmless, it is actually quite problematic. Consequently, Millennials are losing various job opportunities as a result of the stereotyping. ... The constant scapegoating from Mass Media is creating an environment where other generations have much disdain for Millennials for issues that Millennials have not caused. These issues that Millennials are being scapegoated for have mainly been caused by other generations, however Mass Media does not mention that at all. The Washington Times reveals that "In reality Millennials face a bloated federal budget – thanks mainly to baby boomers." (Harper). The quote shows that Millennials are being blamed for a problem that they did not cause, which is actively getting them despised by other generations. Another example of the scapegoating is shown with the environment. Many news stations such as Fox News are accusing Millennials of not caring about the environment due to a lack of Millennials identifying as environmentalists. Although this might be true, it has been shown that Millennials have created products that are more environmentally friendly and even prefer to purchase more environmentally friendly products. In her essay, Rayapura mentions "Millennials are 15 times more likely to buy and pay more for an ecofriendly product compared to others" (1). • 67. The Impact Of The Sexualisation And Objectification Of Women Introduction Modern–day society has now been dominated by the media. Almost all of us are affected by media in one way or another. In today's world, it is undeniable of the huge role that media plays in our everyday life, both positively and negatively. Our perception of body image, our physical appearance and our identity, have been shaped and sculpted by what is presented in the media. While media has brought about many benefits, giving us the ability to communicate and interact easily, breaking down cultural and social barriers, it has also restricted ourselves from independent thinking and self–control, leaving us gullible to believing that the exaggerated images and news we see are the truth and what is 'meant to be', when in fact, they are not. The audience for media is wide and varied, however, it is arguable that adolescents and teenagers are the most easily affected. Growing up in an environment where sexualisation and objectification is a norm, the extent to which the younger generation will be affected by these ads is unknown. This essay investigates the impacts in which the way body image is presented in the media and its effects to answer the following research question: What is the impact of the sexualisation and objectification of women in new media advertisements and its effect on body image? The Importance of Media throughout History Mass media has long been a communication tool for people to socialise and exchange ideas with one another. It is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Stereotypes Of Black Men Essay The media is powerful. It shapes the minds of millions of Americans. Our position in the world allows our media to not only shape the perceptions of Americans, but the world at large. Whether listening to the radio, going to the movies or turning on your television, your brain is being feed a diet of what to wear, what to buy and more importantly, how to think, how to think about others. Media shapes our perceptions of different races, sex and religions. What are the effects of media and the stereotyping of these groups? We know that through television and film, the media reinforces stereotypes that have a profound effect on how we view these people in our everyday life. Public perceptions and attitudes toward black males not only help to create barriers to advancement within this society, but also make that position seem natural or inevitable. The overall presentation of black males in the media is distorted in a variety of ways, relative to the real–world facts. For various reasons, media of all types collectively offer a distorted representation of the lives and reality of black men. In turn, media consumption negatively affects the public's understandings and attitudes related to black men. And these distorted understandings and attitudes towards black men lead to negative real– world consequences for us. These negative understandings of black men are consistently used to justify the racial inequities we encounter in a number of institutions, seen in the form of inflated rates of school discipline, underachievement in higher education, and higher rates of poverty, homicide, unemployment, and over involvement in the criminal ... • 71. Media Stereotyping Of Black Men In The Media The researcher began by asking the question what factors contribute to the stereotyping of black men as "dangerous and criminal". And the researcher found out that although media influence stereotyping of this sort, it's only smaller part of the larger problem. There is a general tendency in the media to over–represent African–American as criminal; portray black men as particularly dangerous, and present information about black suspect that assume their guilt. However, even when crime featuring black and white criminal suspects is presented in equitable ways in the media, viewers' existing stereotypes can result in biased interpretations that may serve to maintain racial stereotypes nevertheless. The researcher conclude that, viewers' selective perception and interpretation of media content suggest that equitable media portrayals of race in crime–related programming may not be sufficient to address the concerns presented here. Reason for choosing the Article. From the media I consume on daily I personally believe that the overrepresentation or misrepresentation as well as negative portrayal of black suspects/ criminals in the media cause the maintenance and reinforcement of black men stereotype such as dangerous and threatening. However, when I read the article I was intrigued to find out that media play only a small part of the larger problem. The problem is deeper than just negative media portrayal of black men. • 73. Duggan Consumer Culture With the continuing development of Internet technology, news has never been shared faster. It is easy to access national and international news in seconds. Despite the fact that network news may be losing some viewers, online articles and news sites are gaining more attraction. News and media can have a significant impact on people's perceptions of different cultural issues, thus affecting consumer culture. According to Bryant and Oliver (2009, p.9) "how a person feels about a particular issue may be rooted in his or her personal experience of in the general culture or exposure to the mass media". Throughout this essay I will analyse the language used in an online article from Mail Online by Richard Littlejohn, titled "Duggan was a Gangster, not Nelson Mandela". I intend to show how young black men are criminalised in the news media and how this affects black consumer culture and perpetuates negative stereotypes. Despite the fact that the article focuses on issues in London and the United Kingdom, I will focus this discussion on the United States, as this is where racial profiling, criminalisation, and police violence is significantly ... Littlejohn goes on to argue that Duggan has had a "well–documented criminal career" and that he was a "gangster" that was intent on harming someone ("if he wasn't a gangster, why was he carrying a gun on the day he died? [...] Perhaps he was going duck hunting on the River Lea. Then again, perhaps not"). This language reflects what Smiley and Fakunle (2016, p.355) refer to as "micro–insults and ... • 75. Stereotyping Happens In The Media It is believed that the media has a huge influence on the opinions of others. This can also be evident when looking at religions in the media. To understand how religious stereotyping happens in the media, it must be first observed as to why they occur in the first place. One of the main reasons for this daily occurrence is the fact that media uses lack of research. It should always be expected to find inappropriate content that is edited inaccurately. It can also be found that those who contribute to the media may have little to no background with religion. Furthermore, tools like the Internet are used by millions across the world everyday. This allows people to communicate their own interpretations of events. The problem is that these people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Stereotyping In The Media How often do we find ourselves laughing at an inappropriate stereotype that is promoted in the media? It seems that as we continue to move through time, stereotypes in the media become more and more prominent. Some find them as forms of 'comic relief' while others, including myself, see them as another way to showcase our ignorance of the people and world around us. The stereotype that revolves around Indians, also known as South Asians, tends to be the most recognizable. In order to understand this stereotype in the media, we will focus on the typical stereotypes that involve this group of people, why we stereotype against Indians, and ways it effects future generations. What are some of the more popular shows in our media that portray ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning, the stereotypes developed were seen as acceptable because they 'represented' Indians. As we move through time, they have become over exaggerated and unacceptable. The stereotypes have been pushed to an unbelievable limit and they stopped coming off as funny to Indians. Since these stereotypes were created, the Indian community has outgrown them and no longer sees them as accurate representation. Pari Mathur explains in his article titles "Who I Was and Who I Want to Be– Indian Americans in Media" that unfortunately, the media's preconceived idea of Indians makes it difficult for society to look at Indians and not see "just a dude who bobbles his head with a mustache, because that's what they've seen on TV" (Mathur, 2013). After speaking with my close friend, Shobin Shanko, a first generation Indian American, he explains that in comparison to other stereotypes, "they are moving away from the stereotypical ways that they were portrayed back in the day versus Indian and Asian stereotypes are still very prevalent" (Shanko, 2016). In order to change how society views Indians in the media, it is up to the Indian community to begin breaking down the stereotypes. The breakdown of stereotypes has begun in more recent years. Actors, specifically Indian actors, have worked to fix these stereotypes. In the show ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
