This working paper analyzes the media portrayal of immigration in South Africa from 2011 to 2015, focusing on how immigrants are represented as threats, notably through negative labels like 'illegal' and 'undocumented.' Utilizing a quantitative approach based on over 5,000 articles, the study identifies significant patterns reflecting anti-immigrant sentiment and examines the impact of such narratives on public perceptions and policy. Ultimately, the findings reveal a media landscape that amplifies fears regarding immigrants while neglecting their contributions to the economy and society.
