The hippie subculture originated in the United States in the mid-1960s as a youth movement that spread worldwide. Hippies were initially referred to as beatniks who had moved to New York City. While commonly stereotyped as being sexually promiscuous, the hippie movement coincided with the sexual revolution in which traditional views of sex were being challenged. Hippies also typically rejected mainstream religion and instead embraced more personal spiritual beliefs often drawn from folk traditions or Eastern religions like Buddhism and Hinduism.
