IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA

FORMS AND CONVECTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCT?
WHAT ARE THE FORMS AND CONVECTIONS OF THE
POP GENRE?
The Pop genre is filled with convections involving young adults and teens aged 14-19, the Pop genre is
mainly fueled by the curiosity of those who want to know what its like to be an A-list celebrity.
Convections surrounding this genre of music include artist who are clothed in fashionable, stylish and up-
to-date outfits this is to be relatable to their target audience who is mostly the young demographic of the
population.
Colours used in Pop magazines are usually bright and bold colours, which are associated with happiness
and positive sensations, these types of colours include; purple- this colour is associated with wealth, luxury
and creativity, however the shade of purple matters as a dark purple evokes a gloomy scenery and may
cause frustrated. Yellow- this colour brings joy, happiness and energy to most who see it as a way to live.
USED OF FORMS AND CONVECTIONS?
For my Pop magazine I have used many traditional Pop magazine convections, such as
the colour palette of reds, pinks and purples etc. this is to follow main stream Pop
magazines because if the colour scheme were to be darker or a completely different
colour scheme like greens, blues or greys it might not have been as recognizable as a
general Pop magazine. I believe that I was somewhat successful at getting forward the
convection of the pop genre as I have followed most of the convections stated above.
The model I used for my front cover was wearing conventional modern clothes that a
young adult would wear on a normal day, also to convey the idea that even though she
appears to be a model and have a perfect life underneath all her fame, she is a normal
person with the same everyday problems just like everyone else who reads this
magazine.
CHALLENGE OF FORMS AND CONVECTIONS?
For my Pop magazine I kept most of the usual forms and convection with Pop magazines as I don’t believe
otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to keep the magazine to immediately to strike you as a Pop magazine
and therefore I chose to keep most of the forms and convections. However, I did try to challenge the
convection of the need to have someone who is wearing little to no clothing or some outrageous piece of
clothing or prop that could be regarded as controversial to other cultures. As well as this I tried to blend/
include other colours in ever so slightly while still sticking to the traditional colours, this was shown by the
blues, oranges and greens in the name of the magazine and on the front cover with the side articles and
with the lines of colour in the front cover and double page spread, this was done to keep constancy as I
knew that I would struggle to do that throughout the entire magazine.
PROFESSIONAL MAGAZINE
MY MAGAZINE
The tittle of my very on magazine is very different in comparison to the
professional magazine from ’Q’, the first thing that is noticed when compared
is that the tittle in my magazine is much more colourful but it doesn't stand
out as much across the whole front cover as my front cover in general is much
brighter, unlike the professional magazine which is just one plain colour with
the Q in the middle, but it stands out more as the whole front cover isn’t as
colourful. Also, my tittle is in front of the model in my magazine, and in the
professional magazine part of the tittle is covered by the model, this could be
because their magazine is already well known and people won’t need to see
the whole tittle.
The differences between the main sell line in my
magazine and professional magazine are that the
fonts are very different, for my main sell line I
used the same font as the one I used in the tittle
to keep some form of consistency, in the
professional magazine they used a more formal
font and just a the plain white unlike my
magazine.
The people who appear in the front cover are very important as it might
make the difference if someone buys the product or not. I decided to use a
very good looking model as it might influence people to buy the magazine,
this is also why I told the model to have a happy facial expression and to
have her body expression to be open to incline people to feel good when
looking at the magazine. The professional magazine uses a very popular
musician, but instead of looking happy and approachable, she looks very
mysterious as if she is hiding a secret from the audience. Both of the shots
are similar but the body position of the model in the professional magazine
is as if she is about to turn away from you, therefore creating more mystery.
COMPARISON OF CONTENTS PAGE
When I design my contents page, the first thing I began with was the tittle as it is the most
important part of the contents page. The colour scheme is very different from the professional
magazine because my product is brightly coloured with shades of pinks, purples and lighter colours
like blues and greens which relates to the theme of Pop music, whilst the professional magazine is
very dull and only has black and white, the overall look that this gives the content page a more
serious look which doesn't’t fit the theme of Pop.
The font of both text is very different from each other as the type of font I used in my product is
more groovy and looks somewhat retro, and the other tittle is formal, which again doesn’t fit the
Pop theme.
The articles are both on the left of the page, and the basic layout is very similar, however
that’s where all similarities end. The colour of the font is also very different from the
professional magazine as the colours differ drastically due to the colour scheme of the
whole magazine. The fonts of both magazines are also very different from each other, as
the tittle of each article in my product is very colorful and bold in comparison to the
professional magazine.
The images used in the professional magazines and my final
product are both very crisps and very detailed, however the
professional magazine only has 1 image as the background
unlike my product which has 3 images. The professional
magazine’s image is a close-up shot but its from the side slightly,
this along with the light source coming from a slight angle as
well which creates a shadows on one side of her face adding a
sense of mystery that may lead to the reader further reading
into the magazine. However, in my contents page I decided to
make all the images in my contents page brighter as I wanted to
have a positive vibe along with my magazine. I think that I was
relatively okay at bringing the positive vibe through the images
in my context page and all the images used in the magazine.
In my magazine I decided to use a
technique that almost every magazine
uses to catch the readers eyes, that is the
drop cap, what this does is capture the
readers attention into a certain spot of
the page, from that spot the reader can
then proceed to continue reading down
each column. The size of the fonts are
both very small, about 11pt this is the
average font size as it allows a lot of the
article to be written in and still having
enough space for other things in the
page.
The tittle of each magazine are in both
of the double page spreads, this is to
show continuity and a professional
look throughout. However in my
magazine I position the tittle in middle
bottom of the page because both of
the other sides of the page have the
page numbers and I didn't want the
double page spread to look uneven.
However, in the professional magazine
the have their tittle on the bottom left
of the page.
Images in a double page spread are very important, as
you don’t want two whole pages of an article with no
picture this is why most magazines decide to dedicate
one of the two pages to the artist as it grabs the
readers attention. Although, the picture in my
magazine I on the right hand side of the page and in
the professional magazine the image is on the left side
of the page, but this is their own house style which
they use for most magazines under this tittle.
Quotes are very important to a double
page spread as it provides an insight into
what the artist is thinking at a certain
point in time. In the professional
magazine they have no quotes but this
could be because on the page with the
article its packed with the written words
and therefore has no space for any
quotes.
In my magazine I decided to have 2
quotes to cover some space that was free
and therefore not have the double page
spread so empty and fill it in with some
useful information.

Images in a double page spread are very important, as you don’t want two whole pages of an article with no picture this is why most magazines decide to dedicate one of the two pages to the artist as it grabs the readers attention. Although, the picture in my magazine I on the right hand side of the page and in the professional magazine the image is on the left side of the page, but this is their own house style which they use for most magazines under this tittle. Quotes are very important to a double page spread as it provides an insight into what the artist is thinking at a certain point in time. In the professional magazine they have no quotes but this could be because on the page with the article its packed with the written words and therefore has no space for any quotes. In my magazine I decided to have 2 quotes to cover some space that was free and therefore not have the double page spread so empty and fill it in with some useful information.
