2. There are 3 theories of
audience-
The effects model or the hypodermic model
The uses and gratification model
Reception theory
These 3 theories can help us gain a better
understanding of the relationships between
text and audience
3. The effects model
Is the consumption of media texts which has
an effect or influence on the audience
It is normally considered that the effect is
negative
Audiences are passive and powerless to
prevent the influences
The power lies with the message of text
4. The hypodermic model
Katz & Lazarsfeld (1955) thought that
implied mass media had a direct, immediate
effect on its audiences and that messages in
media texts are injected into the audience by
the powerful syringe like media the audience
is powerful to resist
Therefore the media works like a drug the
audience is drugged addicted, doped or
duped meaning they want more and more
5. The uses and gratifications
model
Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratification
theory suggests that media users play an
active role in choosing and using the
media. Users take an active part in the
communication process and are goal
oriented in their media use. The theorist say
that a media user seeks out a media source
that best fulfills the needs of the user. Uses
and gratifications assume that the user has
alternate choices to satisfy their need.
6. The uses and gratifications
model
This is the opposite to the effects model
