Every time more women are elected to parliament, and more girls complete school and graduate from university, we are making progress.
Every time perpetrators of violence against women are prosecuted and brought to justice, and more laws are adopted and implemented to protect women’s rights, we move ahead. Every time women’s voices are heard in peace talks and nation building, and increased resources are dedicated to women’s full and equal participation, we take steps forward. Introduction 1. In its resolution 54/4, the Commission on the Status of Women proposed some measures that Member States and other stakeholders could take to promote women’s economic empowerment and requested that the Secretary-General report to the Commission at its fifty-sixth session on the implementation of the resolution. The present report incorporates contributions by Member States1 and organizations of the United Nations system,2 drawing on evidence found in the publications of United Nations entities and other sources, and concludes with recommendations for future action for the consideration of the Commission. 2. Women’s economic empowerment, both as a process and as a functioning reality, enables women to enjoy economic rights and make decisions that impact their own lives and influence others. It opens up opportunities for women to achieve other dimensions of empowerment, including political and social empowerment. In addition to its intrinsic value, women’s economic empowerment can contribute to the achievement of other key development goals.3 Achieving women’s economic empowerment requires a comprehensive and coherent approach that pulls together institutions, policy instruments and monitoring frameworks, including the influence and leadership of women and groups working for their rights. It entails valuing, measuring and respecting women’s work. 3. The report also examines the macroeconomic policy environment and analyses the situation of women as workers, entrepreneurs and decision makers, including their contribution to the economy and human well-being. It makes the case that women’s economic empowerment is essential if societies worldwide are to exit the current global economic downturn and deliver balanced and sustainable global growth, with equality, justice and dignity for women and men. It focuses on areas where further action is needed to accelerate women’s economic empowerment, including macroeconomic policy, trade, work and employment, entrepreneurship and economic decision-making. While access to and control over assets underpins women’s economic empowerment, these matters are not considered in the present report in order to avoid duplication with other reports on the priority theme. 4. Right now, we have a unique opportunity to make greater progress as the international community works to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), define a post-2015 development framework and review progress since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing.The agreement reached at the 2014 UN Commission on the Status of Women lays a strong foundation for a transformative global development agenda that tackles structural gender inequality.
Since I assumed leadership of UN Women in August 2013, I have placed an emphasis on strengthening partnerships for action and ensuring that the UN system delivers as one for women and girls.We are reaching out to men and boys, and forging closer collaboration with women’s groups, civil society, and the private sector as we support governments in national development. Every time more women are elected to parliament, and more girls complete school and graduate from university, we are making progress.
Every time perpetrators of violence against women are prosecuted and brought to justice, and more laws are adopted and implemented to protect women’s rights, we move ahead. Every time women’s voices are heard in peace talks and nation building, and increased resources are dedicated to women’s full and equal participation, we take steps forward. This annual report showcases the progress and potential of UN Women.

Commission on the Status of Women Fifty-sixth session 27 February-9 March 2012
Introduction 1. In its resolution 54/4, the Commission on the Status of Women proposed some measures that Member States and other stakeholders could take to promote women’s economic empowerment and requested that the Secretary-General report to the Commission at its fifty-sixth session on the implementation of the resolution. The present report incorporates contributions by Member States1 and organizations of the United Nations system,2 drawing on evidence found in the publications of United Nations entities and other sources, and concludes with recommendations for future action for the consideration of the Commission. 2. Women’s economic empowerment, both as a process and as a functioning reality, enables women to enjoy economic rights and make decisions that impact their own lives and influence others. It opens up opportunities for women to achieve other dimensions of empowerment, including political and social empowerment. In addition to its intrinsic value, women’s economic empowerment can contribute to the achievement of other key development goals.3 Achieving women’s economic empowerment requires a comprehensive and coherent approach that pulls together institutions, policy instruments and monitoring frameworks, including the influence and leadership of women and groups working for their rights. It entails valuing, measuring and respecting women’s work. 3. The report also examines the macroeconomic policy environment and analyses the situation of women as workers, entrepreneurs and decision makers, including their contribution to the economy and human well-being. It makes the case that women’s economic empowerment is essential if societies worldwide are to exit the current global economic downturn and deliver balanced and sustainable global growth, with equality, justice and dignity for women and men. It focuses on areas where further action is needed to accelerate women’s economic empowerment, including macroeconomic policy, trade, work and employment, entrepreneurship and economic decision-making. While access to and control over assets underpins women’s economic empowerment, these matters are not considered in the present report in order to avoid duplication with other reports on the priority theme. 4. Women have been recognised as a crucial force in economic development of any nation. However, it is imperative to mention that traditionally their lives were confined to the four walls of the house. They were mainly engaged in household chores, bearing and rearing of children and were treated on different footings. Their existence was deeply influenced by the prevailing patriarchal system which often results into deprivation of their basic rights as enjoyed by their male counterparts including their right to education. But, with the advent of various legislations, social reforms and women’s movement worldwide, there was a major shift in the socio-cultural set up and women’s entitlement to education begun to be recognised as pivotal for nations’ economic development. On the other hand, history has revealed that in Indian sub-continent, there was a worst scenario of women education. Women were denied their basic right to education and such bias was deeply rooted in prevailing socio-cultural set up where females were treated inferior to men. But, in the backdrop of various social reform movements, women movements, Christian missionaries and new economic reforms of 1991 popularly called as LPG concept (Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization), women education in India witnessed a drastic change. Further, research has noted a strong positive linkage between women education and economic development of any nation. Thus, keeping in view the importance of women education for an economic development of a nation, the present study is an endeavour towards identifying, reviewing and analysing the prior work with respect to above linkages. Moreover, the study has also identified the various issues pertaining to women education in India which has remained unaddressed and demands utmost attention. At the end of the study, various valuable suggestions have also been drawn in order to fill the identifiable gaps in women education structure so as to change its state and enhance its contribution towards achieving robust economic development.

The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:

The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.
