POLLINATOR MEADOW
Plant a
2. Illinois is home to more than 500 species of
native bees— some of our most important pollinators—
yet many are at risk of disappearing from our ecosystems.
Significant efforts are being made nationally to create habitat
for these critical pollinators.
In the Chicago region, The Conservation Foundation and
Applied Ecological Services have joined forces to design a series
of Low-Growing Pollinator Meadow Mixes that offer the potential
to save our pollinators, diversify habitat, improve our water quality
and lower maintenance costs from mowing of turfgrass.
These seed mixes are largely comprised of native prairie grasses and
wildflowers, ranging from 11 to 20 species, that will grow 18 to 36
inches tall and provide nectar and habitat for pollinators, beneficial
insects, birds, butterflies and a diversity of wildlife.
When you replace a significant amount of turfgrass with a diverse
planting — two to five acres minimum — you’ll not only help
your winged and feathered friends, you will join an ever-growing
community of individuals and businesses who have made a
Commitment to Sustainability.
And you’ll help your pocketbook with less mowing of turfgrass,
less burning of fossil fuel, and less maintenance cost in fertilizer,
pesticides and irrigation.
Colony Collapse Disorder
Colony Collapse Disorder is the term
given to the mysterious and dramatic
disappearance of European honeybees
from North America. It is estimated
that if the trend continues, honeybees
will completely disappear from our
continent by 2035. The direct impact of
this for humans would be the loss of most
fruits, vegetables, and nuts pollinated by
honeybees, with secondary trouble for beef
and dairy industries since cattle rely on the
clover and hay pollinated by honeybees.
The good news is native pollinators stand
ready to fill the gap, but we need to help
them by providing important habitat and
season-long food sources.
Here are the particulars:
• 2-5 Acres minimum
• Meadow will be low profile: 18 – 36 inches
• Fve mixes available, ranging in diversity*
• Meadow mixes have a 3-5 year maturation
• Installation and maintenance services available from AES
or approved contractors
• Three-year maintenance guidelines provided
• Seed Cost (not including site preparation, seed installation)
ranges from $525 to $1,055 per acre**
*Substitutions available
** Custom pricing: Variability depends on acreage, site conditions and seed mix selected
Including native plants in meadow landscapes replaces natural areas lost to
development and helps to revitalize and restore our complex natural world.
Support for Corporate Sustainability Mission! Diversity of species,
bloom times, color and texture is a sustainable transformation from the
high maintenance monoculture of turfgrass.
Meadow restoration within homeowner association common areas, corporate
campuses or public parklands lowers maintenance cost and provides passive
recreation such as hiking and bird watching.
Changing colors and blooms throughout the year will add interest to
your landscapes.
Replace your turfgrass with a low-growing pollinator Meadow Mix
Below are the species selected for the low-end and high-end cost seed
mixes. In addition to these mixes, AES has designed three mid-range
mixes, for which we’d be happy to provide detailed information.
