The document summarizes a media action roadshow event hosted by BBC Scotland to introduce staff to the work of BBC Media Action, an independent charity sponsored by the BBC. The objectives were to promote the event creatively to staff, plan the venue and technology, and host representatives. The result was the highest staff turnout, providing BBC Media Action a platform to introduce their work combating issues like Ebola, open a dialogue with staff, and gain financial and volunteer support.

Social Contract Archaeology: a business case for the futureDigVentures Ltd
In July 2012, DigVentures pioneered an entirely new procurement model for archaeology, hosting Europe’s first crowdfunded and crowdsourced excavation at the internationally significant Bronze Age site at Flag Fen (www.digventures.com). Crowdfunding has been most successful in creative industries such as film, music and drama, where supporters can launch projects such as films, records, exhibitions and runway shows through buying perks and rewards (such as invitations to premieres, performances, or limited edition artwork) with creative and social entrepreneurs retaining commercial and artistic ownership of their project. Ideas that may not fit the pattern required by conventional financiers therefore achieve traction in the marketplace, supported by what has been called the ‘wisdom of crowds.’ This new approach to funding (using social networks in the context of e-commerce transactions) was combined with crowdsourcing, inviting the public to join the excavation team – either via a robust digital platform from the comfort of their armchairs (in real time), or with their sleeves rolled up on the site itself. The DigVentures approach can best be described as ‘Social Contract Archaeology’ – a value-led archaeology situated within the emerging trend for social commerce, entering into a social contract with as wide a constituency of funders and stakeholders as possible. Assessing the success of this new business model in terms of audience reach and engagement, this paper will present key metrics for breadth, depth and diversity of on and off-line participation, evaluating our contribution to the public good.

Moses has been the core of most of the developments on the machine translation market nowadays. Despite a thriving community, its open source core means that users need to find ways to adapt it and improve its features. Pangea v3, part of the EU's EXPERT project provides hybrid features based on search engine type recall to improve translation output.
Discovery of Latent Factors in High-dimensional Data Using Tensor Methods: Learning latent variable mixture models in high-dimension is applicable in numerous domains where low-dimensional latent factors out of the high-dimensional observations are desired. Popular likelihood based methods optimize over a non-convex likelihood which is computationally challenging due to the high-dimensionality of the data, and it is usually not guaranteed to converge to a global or even local optima without additional assumptions. We propose a framework to overcome the problem of unscalable and non-convex likelihood by taking the power of inverse method of moments. By matching the moments, the problem of learning latent variable mixture models is reduced to a tensor (higher order matrix) decomposition problem in low-dimensional space. This framework incorporates dimensionality reduction and thus is scalable to high-dimensional data. Moreover, we show that the algorithm is highly parallel and implemented a distributed version on Spark in Scala language.

The Do a bit project has been developed to create entry-level or bite-sized volunteering opportunities in the Blackpool area.
Open badges has been chosen as an invaluable tool that allows the Volunteer Centre and Volunteer Involving Organisation (VIO’s) to recognise and reward their Volunteers.
The Volunteer Centre Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde was selected to receive financial support from the £10m Innovation in Giving fund, run by NESTA and funded by the Cabinet Office.
Part of the 'Do a Bit' project involved developing a Volunteering Passport which is a community tool where Volunteers can keep a record their own achievements (i.e. the places where they have Volunteered), record their skills learnt during their role at the Volunteer Involving Organisations. The Volunteer Passport also provides other relevant information that may be needed along their volunteering journey.
Included within this passport is an area that rewards the skills and effort of the Volunteer and to meet this requirement the Volunteer Centre Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde used Mozilla Open Badges.
The reason why we used Open Badges was that it gave not only gave the Volunteer Centre the flexibility of choosing suitable Open Badges to award but also allows other Volunteer Involving Organisations the same flexibility.
The very nature of Open Badges allows for badges to be designed and issued for almost anything.
2. OBJECTIVE:
• To introduce BBC Scotland staff, based at BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay, to the work of BBC Media Action.
• Promoting the event in an inviting, creative and engaging manner – using digital and interactive Posters
and email.
• Planning and organising the event venue, technology and hosting the charity representatives.
3. RESULT:
• Received the highest turn out in comparison to all other BBC bases visited by the Roadshow.
• Gave BBC Media Action the platform needed to introduce their work, aims and objectives.
• Opened a dialogue between staff and charity with regards to what BBC Media Action does, has achieved and hopes to achieve.
• This was especially significant due to the relevance of Ebola as a new international concern during the initial break out in 2014.
• Gave BBC Media Action the platform to gain financial and voluntary support from BBC Scotland staff.
