Measurement

Assigning numbers to the physical
             world.
How far is it to my next class?
• What are we measuring?
• LENGTH
• English: inch, foot, yard, mile
• SI Unit: Meter (m)
• Instruments: ruler, meter stick, measuring
    tape
How much does a car weigh?
• MASS: amount of matter in an object. Said
again, it’s how much “stuff” something has.
• English units (WRONG!): ounce, pound, ton
• SI Unit: kilogram (kg)
• Instruments: scale, balance
• What is the difference of mass and weight?
How long is a commercial on TV?
• What are we measuring?
• TIME
• SI Unit: second (s)
• Are there other ways to measure time?
• Instruments: stopwatch, chronometer,
    hourglass, sundial
How much soda is in a can?
• What are we measuring?
• VOLUME
• English (WRONG IN THIS CLASS): ounces,
  quart, cups, gallon
• SI Unit: Liter
• Instruments: Graduated cylinder (liquids) ,
  beaker (liquids), and rulers (solids)
What is an advantage to using SI
             units?
Metric Mneumonics
• King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink Chocolate
  Milk
• Kilo, Hecto, Deka, UNIT, deci, centi, milli
How do I convert?
• Example: A mosquito has a mass of 10 mg.
What is this mass in kilograms?

• I live 5.4 kilometers from school. How far is
  that in meters?

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Mass is a measurement of how much matter is in an object; weight is a measurement of how hard gravity is pulling on that object. Your mass is the same wherever you are--on Earth, on the moon, floating in space--because the amount of stuff you're made of doesn't change. But your weight depends on how much gravity is acting on you at the moment; you'd weigh less on the moon than on Earth, and in interstellar space you'd weigh almost nothing at all.
  • #9 Mosquito: 10mg * 1 kg/10^6 mg = 1x10^-5 kg. School: 5.4 km * 1000 m/1 km = 5400 meters
