Continuous Improvement in Teaching and Learning – The Community College Open ...Wa State Board Community and Technical Colleges
Using intelligent tutoring systems, virtual laboratories, simulations, and frequent opportunities for assessment and feedback, The Open Learning Initiative (OLI) builds open learning environments that support continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
One of the most powerful features of web-based learning environments is that we can embed assessment into, virtually all, instructional activities. As students interact with OLI environments, we collect real-time data of student work. We use this data to create four positive feedback loops:
• feedback to students
• feedback to instructors
• feedback to course designers
• feedback to learning science researchers
In this JumpStart Session, we demonstrate how OLI uses the web to deliver online instruction that instantiates course designs based on research and how the learning environments, in turn, support ongoing research. We will discuss the Community College Open Learning Initiative (CC-OLI) and how faculty and colleges across the country can participate in CC-OLI and the connection between CC-OLI and Washington State’s Open Course Library project.The power of inner feedback
Our research goes back to first principles about what good assessment and feedback looks like at this point in the 21st century.
Prof David Nicol, who developed the widely used REAP (re-engineering assessment practice) principles, will join us to discuss how his current thinking is evolving.
We will discuss David’s findings in the context of our landscape review and look at how this group may help take the work forward.

Innovative approaches to cross-campus delivery of learning
Speaker: Dan Pearson, principal and chief executive, USP College
USP College was formed in 2017 following the merger of Seevic College in Benfleet and Palmers College in Grays. The college provides career focussed learning giving students the skills employers need, with students not only gaining formal qualifications but developing professional skills desired by businesses.
Dan Pearson, principal and chief executive, explains how the merger has given rise to new opportunities to create a network of expert teachers. Using cutting edge technology, the college crafted a strategy to provide group learning over distance, providing solutions to teacher shortages and small class sizes.

Presentation at Sakai 2011 in Los Angeles: How is it possible to switch the learning management system to SAKAI when no one wants to change and management strategy is lacking on how Internet-based learning should be developed? We want to share our experiences on a, after all, successful example from Umea university with 37.000 students (many of them studying partly or fully on-line) in northern Sweden.

Copy of my slides on "Ensuring that learning technologies have impact, in and out of the classroom, through effective leadership and pedagogies" for SSAT Achievement Show 2016.
In just under 4 years, Greg has led The de Ferrers Academy from having no mobile technology strategy to becoming one of the UK’s most successful examples, evidenced by 100 visitors to the Academy in just the last 6 months.
This workshop will look at how the use of 1:1 tablets at The Academy had impacted upon student outcomes/assessment/workflow and transformed engagement and learning, with real-life examples from many curriculum areas. Greg will show best practice with live tech demos, share ideas & also tips for overcoming barriers and provide links to hundreds of awesome, free resources.

Using Blackboard Learn alongside Microsoft OneNote: the overlaps, the complem...
Beginning in 2016, Nossal High School began to focus its professional learning for staff on the use of Microsoft OneNote as complementary teaching and learning software to the MH Blackboard Learn environment we have run for the last 5 years. In this time, the speed and depth of the take up of OneNote and its impact on the teaching and learning experience of staff and students has been dramatic. Not only have our students fully embraced OneNote from a learners' perspective, all teaching and support staff are using Microsoft OneNote to record their own professional development, maintaining an ongoing conversation with the college executive and collecting evidence for their personal records.
This rapid adoption has forced us to consider closely what OneNote elements overlap with Bb Learn, which features are complementary with Bb Learn and ultimately, what part these two software solutions will have within our overall teaching and learning program.
During the presentation, I will be looking at the features of Bb Learn and OneNote that we intend to keep unique to each environment, as well as the elements that we are comfortable in having some overlap. Our overall aim is to ensure we are promoting to staff the most effective software solution for any given purpose whilst ensuring our students are not confused about the location of resources and information from class to class.
I will conclude with what we currently see as the most effective arrangement for the use of these two software packages going forward.
