- This area of policy work – is confusing to everyone. So I’m going to try and clear some of the misconceptions up.
- One the the important parts of policy making in this area is understanding the different roles that different types of businesses play in the economy and our job market. I’m particularly going to focus on the difference between “small businesses” and “startups”. Small Businesses are a critical part of our job picture, but when I think of small businesses, these are the ones that are small and good with staying small – they are part of the job “churn”. Then there are those SMB that drive job growth or new jobs to our economy, those are SB that incorporate and innovation and pursue growth. They want to get bigger. And there are those that I consider “startups” these come with the “growth” attitude when they are founded.
- Here is another way to think about those businesses that lead to growth. First model, you take an existing small business, you add an innovation of some kind (can come from all sorts of areas including state-funded R&D), then you ADD an attitude that they want to grow and be the best in the world and you get growth. The second model is a “startup”, these are companies that are born with the the innovation and attitude traits already baked-in, and they want to do it soon – these are high-growth companies. These are different approaches but you begin to see the relationship between various terms that get thrown about quite a bit in this space.

- We need a winning attitude to inspire the belief that we support Maine entrepreneurs growing the best companies in the world with world class products.
