Goal of the McNair Scholars Program To increase the number of Ph.D.s among under-represented segments of our society The Bloomfield College McNair program is designed to provide disadvantaged college students with effective preparation for doctoral study
Be currently enrolled at Bloomfield College Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident Be interested in attending graduate school Have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA  Be economically disadvantaged and first-generation college student  or  a member of a group traditionally under-represented in graduate education Eligibility requirements for the McNair Scholars program
What services do we provide? Conducting research with a faculty mentor Graduate school admission assistance GRE preparation assistance  Information literacy (collaborating with the  Library)
What services do we provide? Tutoring (collaborating with CAD) Expert assistance in seeking financial aid for GS Up to $2800 in stipend to do conduct research Assistance with travel and participation at  professional conferences
What services do we provide? Assistance with graduate school visits Graduate school application fee waivers Assistance with disseminating research  findings
What services do we provide? Assistance honing academic, library research  and presentation skills Assistance to improve technical writing skills Peer and faculty mentoring Financial literacy workshops
Objectives of the Bloomfield College McNair Scholars program 1. Research: 40% of McNair participants will complete research and scholarly activities that will directly impact their educational progression each McNair Program academic year. 2. Degree attainment: 87% of new participants served in each McNair Program academic year will attain a baccalaureate degree within three (3) years.
Objectives of the Bloomfield College McNair Scholars program 3.  Post Baccalaureate enrollment: 40% of bachelor’s degree recipients will enroll in a post baccalaureate program by the fall term of the academic year immediately following completion of that degree. 4.  Doctoral attainment: 15% of McNair Program participants will attain a doctoral degree within ten (10) years of the attainment of the bachelor’s degree.
The 2009 - 2010  and  2010 - 2011 academic years What did we accomplish during 2009 – 2010? - We served 25 students - Male = 4 and Female = 21 - Social sciences = 10; Humanities = 5;    STEM = 5; Business = 3; Education = 3; CAD = 1 - 6 graduates/ 5 are currently enrolled in  graduate school (100% persistence to 2 nd  yr ) - all 6 graduates conducted UG research
The 2009 – 2010  and  2010-2011 academic years What did we accomplish in 2010 – 2011? - We have served 22 students thus far - 9 graduating seniors/5 have been accepted  to graduate school/3 have decided to  postpone graduate school for a year* - NYU, Delaware, University of Alabama-  Birmingham, The New School, Rutgers,  Georgetown, and  MSU - All of our juniors have a secured summer  research appointment
Noteworthy successes for 2010 – 2011 year 15 scholars presented their research at professional conferences across the U.S. All seniors have conducted school visits Scholars have been accepted to conduct summer research at MIT, PSU, Tufts, Rutgers, MSU, and Bloomfield College Our Scholars have been recognized for their academic excellence by their departments*
Noteworthy successes for 2010 – 2011 year We have secured an external funding commitment from a Foundation We met each of our objectives in our annual report to the Federal Government* We have collaborated with other McNair Programs within NJ (i.e., Kean, Rider) Continue to foster an excellent relationship with the LSAMP and SSS programs at BC
Noteworthy successes for 2010 – 2011 year We have conducted several real-time webinars for our Scholars* We have engaged our alums to give back to the program Our scholars have been featured in Diverse Education journal Continue to foster an excellent relationship with Career Services

We have a U.S. Department of Education and Legislature that are committed to the program
