Medical Education in China
In 2006, the Chinese Government initiated the enrollment of international students in medical
university programs conducted in English. Since then, students have had the opportunity to
pursue their MBBS degree in China. The popularity of studying MBBS in China has grown
significantly among Indian students since 2013.
China: A Rising Choice for Indian Students
Traditionally, the US and UK have been the favored destinations, boasting prestigious
institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, MIT, and Cambridge, consistently ranking among the top
10 globally. Nevertheless, a notable shift has emerged as they now contend with the rapidly
growing higher education landscape in Asia, particularly in China. A significant milestone was
reached in the 2021 CWTS Leiden Ranking, where China, for the first time, exceeded the US in
the number of universities included in the ranking.
Do Medical Schools in China Adhere to NMC Rules?
It is crucial to determine whether completing MBBS in China allows for practice in India. Until
2018, over 214 medical universities accepted students in the medical program (MBBS) and
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) program in English and Mandarin. Some Indian agents
attempted to enroll students in the TCM program rather than the MBBS program. In 2019, the
Chinese Government authorized international students to exclusively enroll in English-taught
MBBS Programs.
While the Medical Council of India (MCI) previously recognized 45 medical universities in China
offering English-taught programs, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has since been
established, and there is no longer a specific list of NMC-recognized medical colleges in China.
Instead, all 45 medical universities in China are in compliance with the regulations set by the
NMC. In essence, you can confidently pursue your MBBS studies at any of these institutions
without concerns about their recognition status.
Reasons to Pursue MBBS in China
Studying in China's Medical Universities offers several advantages for Indian
students. Some of them are highlighted below:
2. 1. Affordability: China is the most cost-effective option among all destinations for
pursuing MBBS abroad.
2. Quality Education: The quality of education surpasses other budget-friendly options
such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, etc.
3. NMC Guidelines: The MBBS degree obtained in China aligns with the new National
Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines set for the Licensing Exam in India (NExT).
4. Curriculum Similarity: The MBBS course syllabus and subjects in China closely
resemble those in India.
5. Clinical Exposure: China offers a high level of clinical exposure, with patient in-flow
and out-flow exceeding that of India.
6. Infrastructure: The infrastructure in Chinese Medical Universities outpaces both
government (public) and private medical colleges in India.
Cost of Pursuing MBBS in China
Chinese universities offer highly affordable tuition fees, typically ranging from 40,000 to 50,000
CNY per year for most medical programs. When converted to INR, this amounts to
approximately 4-5 lakhs INR per year for Indian students pursuing MBBS in China. The
comprehensive cost of undertaking an MBBS program in China encompasses tuition and hostel
fees, food expenses, first-year VISA extension, medical insurance, biometric verification, and
translation charges upon arrival at the university. Consequently, the total expenses for studying
MBBS in China at most universities range from 2,50,000 to 3,50,000 CNY.
On average, the overall cost for Indian students pursuing MBBS in China is approximately 25–35
lakhs INR for the entire course, considering a conversion rate of 1 CNY to 10 INR. Some
universities even offer MBBS programs in China at a lower cost, falling below 20 lakhs INR,
covering fees, accommodation, and meals. It is important to note that the MBBS fees in China
remain consistent throughout the entire 5-year course. However, this cost does not include the
internship year or any additional charges beyond the tuition fee for the remaining years.
Eligibility Criteria for Pursuing MBBS in China
In contrast to many foreign universities that typically require only a NEET
qualification and a 50% score in the 12th grade, Chinese universities adhere to a
more rigorous selection process. The admission criteria for MBBS in China for Indian
students are more stringent compared to countries like Russia and Georgia,
emphasizing higher NEET scores and academic excellence.
Key eligibility requirements include:
1. NEET Qualification: Students must be qualified in the NEET examination.
3. 2. NEET Scores: Different universities may specify varying NEET score requirements,
with some institutions setting thresholds as high as 300 or more.
3. Academic Performance: Generally, candidates are expected to have scored 60% or
more in their 10+2 grade, although top medical universities in China may require
even higher percentages, such as 75%.
4. Age Requirement: Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years old.
5. Additional Assessment: Many universities conduct online exams or interviews to
further evaluate candidates beyond the basic academic requirements.
