Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is a colorless crystalline solid derived from coal-tar with the chemical formula C6H5OH. In the early days of embalming, phenol was a main component of cavity and arterial fluids and is still used in some cavity fluid solutions today. It is also used as a bleaching agent for skin discolorations and is a precursor to many pharmaceutical drugs such as aspirin. Phenol requires proper protective equipment like gloves and face masks due to its poisonous and corrosive properties.
