2. Definition & Characteristics of Math &
Science
Math is the study of the measurement, relationships, and properties of quantities
and sets, using numbers and symbols. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and
calculus are branches of mathematics.
Science is the systematic study of the nature and behaviour of the material and
physical universe, based on observation, experiment, and measurement, and the
formulation of laws to describe these facts in general terms
3. Why is it important
Children need to know how to have basic Math and Science skills to survive so
that they know or are able to:
How to count money & be financially stable
What chemicals react with what
Able to fix things on their own, or build something
Fix and measure foods
Tell time
4. Tools for applying Science & Math in the
classroom
Posters
WebQuest and Blogs
Robots
Videos/Youtube
5. An Example
Students in many classrooms are just getting lectured on Science and doing some
experiments in the end if they are “good”. For math students are being lectured,
doing homework and then taking a test to see how much they have learned. Both
of these approaches through lecture or neither fun or appealing to students.
I would allow my students to create a robot. Students will be given a topic and will
have to create a robot about that topic. They will have to explain why they created
the robot they way they did and use information from text as their reason on why
they chose it.
6. Conclusion
Both Math and Science get a bad rap for not just being “hard”, but for being taught
incorrectly. Many students are just sitting in the classroom being lectured and then
being tested. The students never get to really use what they learn but being that
math and science is so important they should be taught in a way that students feel
they can understand.
Students need basic math and science skills no matter what they are going to do
in life. Maybe if students were encouraged more and taught to have fun with both
subjects they would realize how important they are to their education and their
well being in life.
