Mate selection is the process of choosing a suitable romantic partner from among many eligible options. Traditionally, mate selection involved filtering potential partners as either being in or out of one's eligible pool based on interactions. However, the success of a marriage comes not from finding the perfect partner but from the ability to adjust to the real person one ends up marrying. Premarital counselling can help couples develop this ability to adjust through open communication before marriage.

Traditional & Modern Society
• When we see people, we filter them as either
being in or out of our pool of eligible. Filtering is
the process of identifying those we interact with
as either being in or out of our pool of people
we might consider to be a date or mate.
