Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory that human motivation is based on a five-tier model of physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization needs. The model has been expanded to include cognitive and aesthetic needs, as well as transcendence needs. The hierarchy suggests that lower level needs must be met before higher level needs can be addressed, and that growth and well-being are dependent on fulfilling needs at each level.
