A study of 12 one-year-old babies in Melbourne found preliminary evidence that food allergies may begin before birth. The researchers analyzed genetic and environmental changes in the babies to try to determine when and why food allergies occur. They found disruptions in immune genes in babies with food allergies that were present at birth, suggesting the changes happened very early in development, possibly during gestation. The researchers believe factors like lifestyle and environmental exposures can change epigenetic switches in DNA and influence whether genes for food allergies are expressed. They now plan to conduct a larger study using 5000 Victorian children to further examine the interactions between genetics, epigenetics and environment in the development of food allergies.

Finally, in the remodeling phase, the wound undergoes scarring and strengthening as collagen is remodeled over several months. Factors like infection, smoking, and malnutrition can disturb the healing process, while proper wound care including debridement, dressings and management of bioburden can optimize healing.
