Martin Luther King Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his advancement of civil rights. King helped change views on equality and fought for equal treatment of all people regardless of race. Schools and businesses close on this day so that King's legacy and message of nonviolent social change can be taught and remembered.
