Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader of the American civil rights movement in the 1960s. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to end segregation through non-violent protest. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a national holiday in the United States to honor his legacy and contributions to fighting racial inequality.
